However, there are a lot of Catholics who are trying their best to live according to the good teachings of Christ. I hope you can also see the good side of the Catholic Church. I love this. I count myself very blessed to have had the chance to go to Europe. I went with my girlfriend and her parents in Aug, 1990. I got to see the Vatican, and several other cathedrals. This is a very powerful story. With lots of very important lessons to be learned. I hope that the people who see this are as moved as I was. I love the sound of a pipe organ. Thank you.

Rick is more like a professor of religious studies in this video than a tour guide. Rick is much more than a video tour guide and vacation guru, he is also obviously a man of deep faith and religious study.

Rick - this is one of your better documentaries. Thank you. But today I still see rich churches and the poor and homeless on their doorsteps. The Churches do not have any authority to be rich and what they hold should be shared out among those in most need.

Corporations are antichrist and run by nicolaitans, that is, clergy over the laity. Priests of Ba'al, basically. Christ's churches are a spiritual entity comprised of called out and assembled saints and any common property is held in trust for the Lord Jesus Christ. My pastor is as accountable to God's word as any other member and no man is above any other in the authoritarian sense. The body labors together and no one has any salary. But you'll never find but a few Baptists who ever so obeyed God, and Luther wanted us exterminated. Why? He's Rome's child. All the reformers are. Perhaps not all lost, but mostly.

I was blessed to go "In the Footsteps of Martin Luther" in 2000 with a group led by a Lutheran pastor from Arlington, Tx. It was an unforgettable 2-wk tour & there were many Lutherans from USA. We visited that year in order to attend the world famous Passion Play, performed every 10 years by the people of the little town of Oberammergau. It was an experience I will never forget! We visited site of Luther's birth and death. It was all very educational & inspirational.

Like Abraham Lincoln, I find myself drawn to Martin Luther every October 31 as his personality and bravery still calls to us. Truly a brave man! I can only imagine his feelings as he moved from one spiritual place to another. Thank you for the documentary...please do keep producing them.

@@koppite9600 your history is inaccurate. He had no desire to build a distinct church, he wanted reform, as did others. many reforms he and others wanted have come to the Catholic Church. The decisions the Catholic Church mane which had zero to do with Biblical teachings or religious basis, and societal factors (including Luther’s belief all people should be able to read, printing press, etc) fueled.

@David Ortiz What's the point? I can say, read the Hussite Wars. Muntzer supported the revolt. And the cause was not about being Catholic (actually many weren't) it was about the oppressive taxes by the nobility. They revolted because they thought they had the Tacit approval of Luther (priesthood of believers doctrine). The peasants revolt followed the Knights Revolt, headed by Franz von Sickingen (Live 5 kilometers from where he died). Why did Luther object to the revolts, he didn't war. He doesn't help himself by his writing style. He also felt that war would only hurt the reformation movement. Heck Even Engels recognized the war was class struggle and not religious. I suggest you read more than just stuff that reinforces your bias.

This was my favorite Rick Steves program. I like learning about all of the European places and their history, but very little has affected my life and the society I live in like the European struggle to understand and appropriate their understanding of God.

n Luther's time, the Catholic Church was vast and the Pope could not possibly know everything that is happening within each Church. Modern communication, like phones, telegraph, and the internet did not exist. The undeniable fact that individual Catholics (perhaps the best known of them being the German Dominican Johann Tetzel [1465-1519]) did sell indulgences--but in doing so they acted CONTRARY to explicit Church regulations. This practice is utterly OPPOSED to the Catholic Church's teaching on indulgences, and it cannot be regarded as a teaching or practice of the Church. In the 16th century, when the abuse of indulgences was at its height, Cardinal Cajetan (Tommaso de Vio, 1469-1534) wrote about the problem: "Preachers act in the name of the Church so long as they teach the doctrines of Christ and the Church; but if they teach, guided by their own minds and arbitrariness of will, things of which they are ignorant, they cannot pass as representatives of the Church; it need not be wondered at that they go astray." The Council of Trent instituted severe reforms in the practice of granting indulgences, and, because of prior abuses, "in 1567 Pope Pius V canceled all grants of indulgences involving any fees or other financial transactions" (Catholic Encyclopedia). This act proved the Church’s seriousness about removing abuses from indulgences. ************************************* Yes, the Catholic Church has indulgences, but they were not for sale. They were personal sacrifices made for sinners, so that God would intervene on their behalf, like fasting and praying. If we ignore the fact of indulgences, we neglect what Christ does through us, and we fail to recognize the value of what he has done in us. Paul used this very sort of language: "Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church" (Col. 1:24)

Martin Luther had OCD, mental obsessions that attacked his faith. It's something that I battled with and it caused so much anxiety. It's one of the worst trials I've ever had to go through. It's ONLY by the grace of God that I got through it.

"which contributed to the birth of our modern age". Such powerful words. Never had their been a greater increase in knowledge than since this time and it was in a large part due to Luther. He saw how the Church was keeping people ignorant so he encouraged teaching of the masses. This concept, along with Gutenberg's printing press, are what caused Germany to be such a center of knowledge and education which lead to this explosion of knowledge.

Than you MR.RICK THIS INFORMATION HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND BETTER THE REFORMATION . GOD BLESS YOU FOR EVER.

I'm now 80, born in Amsterdam but moved USA by 12. Have a BA in History. Rick, this documentary blows me away, with such warring contrasting dogmas explaining the border lines today, This illustrative guiding on spot helps empower both my empathy and anger at 'religious' fanaticism as a justification for a brutality no other animal on earth would even consider. I think doing a video on Jewish history in Europe would be helpful right now.

I been to luther's room in wittenberg castle. I went there when I was stationed in germany. I lived two hours away. I still have a picture in the room.

A T Ur right. The castle is wartburg in eisenach. I got the two names mixed up since the two are related to martin luther. Either way i still have the pic in the room. I was there in 2008. Long time ago. Thanks for the reply.

Great video, Rick. I'm glad that you're branching out to more than just travel videos. Keep up the good work!

As a bit of a Papist who loves the ceremony, Mariam worship, praying to Saints, and above all the Eucharist of the Catholic Church, it took me a while to warm up to the Good Doctor. But once I began to get an idea of exactly WHAT he did - and the power of those 3 words “Justificatio Sola Fide” - I must say the modern world is placed in deep debt to him indeed. So much of what everyone (INCLUDING Catholics) take for granted today is thanks to Martin Luther.

What are the fruits of Martin Luthers split from the Roman Catholic Church? Even he could not have imagined the divisional views we have today in Christianity.

Please go to the English Wikipedia and see the doctrine of Martin Luther against the Jewish People. Upon that doctrine Hittler used to gain power in Germany

I really enjoyed this video. I am Lutheran and it really brought together what I knew already and learned things I did not know as well. I have visited England and Europe several times and have seen the Vatican and the great cathedrals, but I have never visited the places in Europe that Luther resided. I am very comfortable with the ideas of Luther, and I have been married to a Catholic and have attended with her for her services for 45 years that has made for interesting discussion. I have had my own times for attending a Lutheran church on Sunday mornings while she sleeps late and we attend her services on Saturday evenings. It has worked out well.

@@latrelleodom9484 My Dad was able to do a family tree back to the 1700s with a person from England who settled in southwestern Virginia (Kentucky territory). Captured in the Revolutionay War and taken to Fort Detroit per an Ohio war benefits manuscript my Dad found somehow was taken to British Fort Detroit by Indians and later released, The manuscript was used to apply years later for war benefits. Somehow he resettled in northeastern Ohio and is where my Dad's family lived for generations making it easier for a family tree from cemetery sites. I think the original John Loveless from England had a large family of brothers so you never know. My Dad's direct Lovelees family in Ohio is no longer there. My Dad made his way here to St. Louis (via nearby Scott AFB) via the Air Force. My Dad's brother married a Mormon in Alaska from his days in the Air Force and my Dad enjoyed helping out his brother's wife with genealogy that is important to them.

@@michaelseleke7127 You have to look at the big picture. When I worked in Audit for most of my working years my boss would always remind us to not miss the forest by looking at trees.

Mr Rick Steve, I have no words to prise. Martin Luther really had a great life and reform geal .I studied in London Mission School but never know much about the Martin Luther. My sincere thanks to you

Rick certainly have a great deal of experience and knowledge on the subject of travel we love to travel to Europe and Asia Central America, Canada, Eastern cities, Alaska etc.

This history is so important to our understanding of our world yet few of us have been taught it...until now! Thsnk- you! You did a superb job!
