Family history is NEVER boring! We just discovered that the one side of my husband’s family that had been a dead end was because his great-grandfather’s last name was misspelled on most his vital records. What we’re now learning about this side of the family is fascinating . The story of Seraphina made me cry. As much as I enjoy “Finding Your Roots” I like this show even more because the people and their stories that are featured are regular individuals and not famous stars. Please PBS, please consider reviving this show!

So true! My papaw recently told me that his dad killed a man on the Williamson WV bridge and threw him over. Beside the bridge, almost under it, at my Uncles old bar with the apt above, is where in the 60's my uncle Mose shot and killed a deputy after he had ignored a restraining order by my Aunt Corrie. He was pushed from the Williamson hospital 2 days later when the cops went to "interview" him. All around this bridge. We all knew the story about Mose, you can till search it and find the newspapers. But no one had ever been told about great grandpa killing that man. Papaw said he tried to rob his dad and it was self defense... After I found the memorial page for the deputy, I had seen his daughter posted on it. She was an infant when he was murdered by uncle mose. I emailed her and apologized for my ancestors evil choices... don't know if she ever saw it or it ever helped. Rest In Peace Deputy Richmond.

I agree with renewing this show, but I can’t live without Finding Your Roots. I do genealogy research for my African-American friends and my hero Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and his show is teaching me so much about the history of the enslaved. It’s an invaluable resource.

That would be a great thing. I too 42:29 your roots, it's a fabulous show, but I am enjoying this show, don't know why all those shows can be done. This one is a show that helps plain people so worth watching.

I really appreciate this program because these are regular folks and not those high profiles shown on Finding Your Roots!

Wow. I’ve never seen this show before. That first story was heart wrenching. I couldn’t stop crying. There are people who are just so despicable but in the midst of all that horror there were so many brave people.

Jeez I was not prepared for that first story to be so emotional. RIP Serafina

I knew almost immediately that she was Jewish. She had that auburn colored hair that alot of German or eastern European people of Jewish descent have.

1st time found on you tube,

As much as I love history, this is history that hurts. And, yet, the details also has the ability to make one proud of humans who risked their lives to help others.

The first story had my emotions everywhere. As someone descended from Jewish bloodline who immigrated from Germany, it hit home to me in many ways. And the last story, with the Fulp relative and she wanted to find out about who her 4th great grandfather was-I cried at that too. It made me so happy she could find that information out. And how wonderful of a Fulp family relative to be willing to take the dna test to help her find out. Things like this is why I totally love doing genealogy research.

I love these stories. Brings history to life for all, but especially those who are directly tied to those people and places.

Cool! My ancestors were from Clarion County, PA. There’s no connection between my and Jennifer’s families, but learning about some of the history of the area. I love it!

The blend of Black and White families helped build a church and Pastor's home, and let another descendant purchase 200 plus acres and become a farmer. What an inspiring story. And DNA from both races proved community improvements and prospering of numerous families.

So many dont know their history, because so many family members passed too soon without detail. My daughter has been helping me to get information. It is so interesting.

Interesting about the name changes when people immigrated to the US. We thought we were related to people named Green from Ireland. Come to find out, their name was difficult to pronounce, and the person writing out the surname put Green, because they were wearing green coats!

From a European perspective American history looks like fresh, shiny new paint.

I wished that they would have had this show in my 20s & 30s. I’ve been doing mine since the abt the 4th or 5th grade when you do them for school. I’ve just turned 60. And abt 7 yrs ago I finally found my great grandfather’s family that I’d been searching for since I was 11. That huge brick 🧱 wall FINALLY cracked!! 🥳 His and his wife’s headstone 🪦 have the wrong dates on them. I even wrote to the church to let them know & if they could look into it. You know I’m STILL SITTING HERE WAITING, 7 years later!!! 🙄🤨

The family (next of kin) selects and pays for the headstone. If they don't agree to changes and PAY for it, nothing will be done. I doubt the church cares.

I wish they'd have our kids trace their families back in school. What a wonderful thing to know who your ancestors are and what they did to survive, good or bad, it is what it is.

Thank you! You may have just solved one of my mysteries! My family lore also has a similar Privateer story, but he was sent to Cuba before returning to NY/CT.

I wish this show was still making episodes. My family lore, thrift my fathers mothers side, is that we are descendants of Sir Francis Drake. Would love to know if that is true and also if our Canadian ancestors might have come from France. My mother's family roots go back to Prussia. They came in the mid-1800's and settled Paxico, KS. So much to learn.

Bring this series back! Please.

I called the Philly Historical Society years ago about a family mystery and the woman couldn't have been nicer. She gave me hints to try regarding marriage records of the time and invited me to visit the archive.

Love that the one family has a long history of fighting for the average worker against big company greed.

My great - grandfather and grandmother, his daughter, each had 40 acres. My mother told the story of her mother-in-law taking her to an area to show her this land as far as she could see and told her it was the land her father had but lost to gambling. In searching my family history I uncovered a document where my grandmother turned over her 40 acres to her father. So don't know if that was the 40 acres lost to gambling or did he lose both 40 acres to gambling. 🤷🏽‍♀️

There should be deeds to show ownership, I think. And if they lost both plots, check to see if they moved by the next Census - sometimes you can tell if they are at the same location and the county has changed (added names, etc) around them or if they moved. And this is, assuming at least one of them survived to make it to the next Census.

Stopped everything to pay close attention to that family's union story. My family has a similar story and I'm planning how to research it, all in all a very useful watch.

The fire is still burning today? Wow!

Sarafina R.I.P Ma’am. I’m so interested in genealogy. And I’m working on my family’s. But where I’m stumped is. My parents were actually cousins. My Mom’s Dad’s Aunt on his Dad’s side. Married my Dads Mom’s half brother. My Mom had discovered names of people who matched up on both sides. Unfortunately my Mom had given my Grandma (her Mom) the work she had already researched and confirmed as factual. When she became ill. And Grandma had gave My Uncle all the paperwork my Mom worked on because he was going to work with a genealogist. Then my Grandma died a few days later. And don’t know what ever came of the work she had done. And he was planning on finishing. I haven’t been able to get a hold of that Uncle. So I’m going upon going on and retracing all my Moms steps. And unfortunately I don’t have any help in figuring out how and where to go and look.

😭My mother's great uncles, last name, KÜHL, helped hundreds of Jews escape through Poland. Many of her extended family came to US and cut off most of their history of who they were. I learned from my mother to speak a German dialect mixed with Yiddish, so I imagine there is some Jewish ancestory.

My family came here years ago. I am the 13th generation in my family n the 6th generation in America…they bought their land from William Penn n included much of bucks county up to past Allentown.

My husband's immigrant paternal line of northern European farmers became coal miners in central PA in the early 20th century. When organizing began around 1916 or so the federal government deported people (including my spouse's ancestors) with the clothes on their backs. They landed back in the nightmare that was Europe during WWI...largely being victimized by Russian Cossack raiders. Some how they made it back after the war and their ancestors spread across the nation.

It was an evil regime who murdered the Jewish people during WW11. Was so sorry to hear Serafina was murdered along with so many other innocent people because of Hitler and his evil army.😢😢

The c. 1940 photo @7:38 shows men in British uniforms (not German) apprehending some unknown (Jewish?) people. It's a mystery - at least to me.

That dude in the “bobby hat” has a Hitler mustache and if you look really close on the top of that hat looks like one of those little “spiky” things that were worn back in the day. 🤨 But then again I’m just a girl whose only knowledge of uniforms was her dad’s USAF in pictures. 😁 ✌🏻

Crucial facts were skipped over during this episode. At 49:00 into the video Kenyatta Berry was reviewing slave owner George Fulp in the 1860 federal slave schedule. As the camera panned across the listing we can see that in column 6 for George is entered “B.” On the top of that of that column, printed on the standard form but not shown in the video, was the legend, “Color - White (W.), Black (B.), Mulatto (M.), Chinese (C.), Indian (I.)” The presentation then jumps, without explanation, from discussing George Fulp to discussing William Walker Fulp, the guest’s purported ancestor. A William Fulp had been briefly mentioned previously in the presentation, but no William Walker Fulp. How did she come to focus on William Walker Fulp? What was left on the cutting room floor? The presentation lacks continuity. The fact that slave owner George Fulp was Black seems like a fact novel enough to have warranted at least a brief mention.

Who DOESNT want to know who their genes came from and to know whhatever they can fimd put about them they were our lifegivers amd we owe them EVERYTHING!

Genealogy can be fun and surprising. Or tragic, but at least known. Perhaps the hosts are happy they found information and know the guests are nervous, so keeping it light. Why be a Debbie Downer?
