Rush - Xanadu - Drum Cover - Adam Johnston

Музыка

Rush A Farewell To Kings is another favorite album of mine. This was another album I played and played and played in Jr High School and here is am 38 years later doing it again.
Xanadu is another Rush epic that has so many time changes, dynamics, fun drum fills and challenging rhythms. I had to make do without the orchestra bells and tubular bells on this one. After a few takes I think I got pretty close to the Professor. Thank you Rush for all the inspiration over the years.
And thanks to my wife for her help with filming.
This was recorded with Sennheiser mics, a 421 on the floor tom and RODE M3 on the Hi Hat. Mixed live through a 16 ch Mackie Mixer with a stereo output to a sound devices. Mastered and compressed with original track in Protools and edited in IMovie.

Absolutely great. I salute you. I love to see a drummer that ENJOYS what he/she is doing, and I get that in spades with this video. I can think of 4 songs that, like the assassination of JFK, or the blow up of the space shuttle I remember exactly when I heard it. In reverse order, Enter Sandman, Metallica, Black hole Sun, Soundgarden, Magic Magic Man, heart, and... Xanadu, by Rush. I love the entry at 7:24. Great song, great job, I envy you, you have truly accomplished something with your life I live in St. Catharines, Ontario. I grew up in Niagara Falls Ontario. When I was in Grade 7, a group called Hush came to my Junior high School for a dance. Neal Peart was the drummer.

I could not even picture in my mind's eye what he was even doing in many parts of the song, it is that hard! I thought then - I'd love to see a drum cover of this on YT - but I doubt anyone can perfectly master it. But you nailed it! Absolutely amazing. @@adamjohnston2311 Well, it's a stunning, note and stroke perfect tribute. I wish I could only play the drums a quarter as well as you! There are lots of drum covers of Tom Sawyer on YT, which is often thought of as Neil's most difficult (or certainly one of the hardest) drumming parts. And it is very hard indeed. But Xanadu is IMHO, even harder. It's just ridiculously, insanely difficult and only the most super talented could even attempt it! You should be mega proud - the Prof. is up there smiling down and giving you his nod of approval - of that I've no doubt.😀👍🏼

Mate, I’m on a bit of a marathon of your videos! Especially after smoking a few joints!😂 I have a small electric kit at home and “try” to play along with what Neil did. Most of the time I’m kinda doing my own thing with the tracks, but man, you’ve nailed every fill and beat perfectly! Very impressed. Respect man. Keep it up.

Another epic performance by A.J. I am beyond amazed at each Rush cover you do. You are beyond talented, play very tight and have impecable timing. You truly channel "The Professor" himself. I am sure he is smiling down from above at you, R.I.P., N.P.. I have to ask. How long does it take you to learn such masterpieces? You make it look really easy, when it's beyond difficult. I'm an average drummer, as a hobby. Learned the snare classicly through middle school and high school. I only seriously got into set playing a few years ago. I'm just in awe of your playing. Looking forward to the next one. Bravo! Thanks for what you do!

Wow! Thanks for the huge compliment. You’re too kind. When I was in 7th grade I got 2112 from that point I was hooked. I played the record everyday after school, than moved onto a farewell to kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, moving pictures. I was even in bands that played it back then. Now here I am 38 years later learning it all over again because I haven’t played it in decades but it’s still in my blood. It takes me a couple of weeks to learn the parts and get the right feel. From that point I get the recorder out, set up the cameras and go to town. I am so glad I decided to do document these covers because it will be around forever : ) Thanks again for your kind words Joseph.

@@adamjohnston2311 You're more than welcome Adam. I can't always here exactly what's going on drum-wise, but you make it easy for me to see by your great camera work...wow..you have some history playing Rush..it's funny..i never really listented to much beyond moving pictures and signals..i'm first discovering now, at nearly 53 years old, what brilliant work they did..thanks for keeping N.P."s spirit alive..once again, kudos to you!...and thanks for explaining your creative process..if i lived forever, I wouldn't be able to play these songs..lol

Greetings Adam, you're a fantastic drummer. Alex Lifeson was my greatest influence as a guitar player and RUSH was the greatest influence on my band. Much like yourself, A Farewell To Kings is my second favorite album, with Hemispheres being my absolute fave. The Hemispheres Tour back in 1978 was the first concert I ever attended. I attended every single RUSH concert here in Dallas, TX. until they retired. And I was fortunate enough on the Moving Pictures Tour to get a backstage pass and get Alex and Geddy's autographs. Unfortunately, none of us backstage had the courage to approach Neil because he seriously looked like he did not want to be bothered whatsoever...and this was at a time when the public never really knew Neil valued his privacy. So, I wanted to ask you if it would be possible to get a drums only mix of you playing Xanadu? I ask, because I have the isolated backing tracks of Geddy's Bass/Synths for Xanadu but no where online can you find Neil's drum parts isolated. I've been painstakingly editing and aligning a MIDI drum track but it's just not the same as a real drummer. If you'd like to discuss this offline, please contact me at: nathanshane@yahoo.com
