    This sounds like the "live" version of The Trees, from the suite of "side two" videos (Circumstances/Trees/La Villa) recorded "live" during a break in the Hemispheres tour. The tone sounds live, as does the presets and algorithms of the Taurus pedals.

    Man, that STRANGE, off time lick he does from 4:16 to 4:19 (just one of several in this song, just the most obvious) is just so Geddy, man. It shouldn't work, it shouldn't fit, but he always makes it work, and so melodically. Geddy and the bass player from Boston are 2 of the most melodic, 'fill up the empty spaces/great for instrument quantity challenged bands' I've ever heard. (Not that Boston was a power trio of course!!). At 52 and a lifelong musician and Rush fan, I'm only just now understanding how Ged approaches his songwriting so very much like a guitar player (back in the day, up until at least Moving Pics), not a bottom end cat. But ALSO as the bottom end guy. Does that make any sense to you guys?

  • @Oscar-mi9kw

    +D Grundman He uses Taurus Pedals to get that low end on the albums. His bass tone has always possessed growl (could be described as distorted) to it, while possessing raised midrange frequencies. None of this scooped rubbish. The pickup on his jazz bass added some nice low end to his sound, compared to the rickenbacker pickups

  • @gto1607

    @gto1607

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yup. Same age, back then Ged's tone was mystical. Everybody knew he played the Rick but there must have been some magical modification he did to get that tone. There was no internet and you rarely ever saw Ged do an interview and he never talked about his rig. I knew he used SVT's but when I saw my first concert Permanent Waves at Mapleleaf gardens I think in 1980 he was using Ashley Pre-amps and I think BGW poweramps, two 1x15 Tl cabs and I think and svt 810 on the bottom. He even says in the back of the Moving Pictures concert program book, "two 15 inch cabinets made by some mystery monks in mongolia (or something close). Ged always uses both pickups on the rick and Jazz. You can see the pickup switch is always in the middle and has never moved for 40 yrs. He just plays over whichever pickup he feels like getting more sound from.

    @@stillbill6408 No, Jazz basses are easier to put in the mix. I had a true 4001 (MA-114, Fireglo, made in 1973), and in fact played it for over 30 years. And I now play Jazz basses, in fact it's almost all I play. I loved the 4001, don't get me wrong. But, there are things about it that get irritating. Ged replaced his whole bridge/tailpiece assembly so that mess at least couldn't have been an issue but it's a double truss rod and I bet it was a nightmare to keep all that set up properly on long tours. I don't know if it could have been the weight since they seem a tad smaller than Jazz basses but are made of heavier wood I think. I lost mine in a misfortune but I'm in no real hurry to get one back, instead I have expanded my collection of Jazz basses. This is after many, many, many recorded tracks, not just an off-the-cuff observation either. It's not that I really would hate getting my old 4001 (or one like it) back. It's just, well, it got a lot more costly to own one since i first bought mine in 87.

    Riddickisawesome101 The 4001 and 4003 look almost the same, but there are significant differences to the instrument. The truss rod system was completely revamped on the 4003, during the '73-'75 transition period the 4001 neck pickup location was moved which changed the tonal character, and finally the electronics were changed to include the .0047 cap removal. The subject of pickup differences is a whole thread all together, i.e. real toasters and horseshoes vs. modern reissues.

    its a bit confusing, but rickenbackers from the early to mid 70's had the neck pickup closer to the fretboard, and the rickenbacker he owned and used from '79 and '83 is the later one, with the neck pickup moved further a few inches. they're both 4001's, but the design change was noted. 4003's are much thinner overall.

This is obviously from exit stage left because of the slide that Geddy does during one of the transitions that isn’t on the studio recording but is on Exit Stage Left. Geddy has to sing and play this shit at the same time. Even the pros make mistakes. Very very hard to play basslines at this difficulty level clean and consistent in front of a sold out crowd while having to sing at the same time.

    This lacks Geddy's fluidity and flair but as precise as an atomic clock.......

    Wow. I never realized how overly-busy that bass line was. The sound is great but quite frankly there's just too many notes in the mix!

    Jeff S 😂 Obviously you don’t truly appreciate Geddy Lee and his bass skills.

    @@dukealbert7017 I love Geddy Lee's bass playing, and truly do appreciate it, and that was still an overly-busy bass line.

    @@dukealbert7017 Yes, he does. You don't appreciate another opinion. The focus of Geddy's bass part here gets lost.

    Not sloppy at all. Isolated bass tracks usually sound pretty rough.

    Rough especially finger-style, Daniel. Bass players that play with a pick tend to sound more accurate when isolated. Still awesome nonetheless!
