Rush Limbaugh - How Talk Radio Works

In these excerpts from one of his early interviews, Rush reveals how the talk radio sausage is made. Like any form of entertainment, the primary goal is to capture the attention of the audience and compel them to keep listening. Rush is remarkably candid in describing his attitude toward his performance and the importance of caller screening.

1:40 -- that is the one thing that Rush Limbaugh did that almost nobody else was able to pull off. It was pure genius what he was able to do in regards to people who didn't initially agree with him. He converted so many liberals to his way of thinking it's astounding. It was said and proven many times over, that when a young liberal (under 30 yrs old) listened to the show for just 4-5 weeks solid, they would over 50% of the time, begin turning conservative. He was just that damn good!

Interesting interview with the most successful guy in the field. Regardless of what you think about his politics, you've got to admit he knows his craft. I wish there were a liberal radio host who could do as well, but I haven't heard one yet.

Why do people think it's significant to Cypher his motives? I couldn't care less. Additionally there is no contradiction between his motive to profit and postulate his political perspective. I suspect those worried about his motives themselves think their favored sources are angelic in their nature. Well when you are fundamentally irrational you need to rely on something even if it's impossible lol.

Right, he says it right there at :44, it's all a play on emotions, and it's all to make money. He's may not be making his listeners mad at him, but he's making them mad at something. He says that on average 50% of people will disagree, look how the election map of red and blue broke down during Limbaugh's heyday in the 90's. He has become what used to be a rock star.

The clip demonstrates that he knows what plays well and generates ratings. (anger) He said "A lot of what I do on radio requires peoples' imagination to be fruitful." He's just selling the snake oil that you want. Get a clue and try some independent thought.

The best parallel for talk radio and Rush's show would be professional wrestling; They're pretty much the same format. Rush's job is to get people agitated, that's what makes them listen. He's basically admitting that in these clips, that it's a work on his fans. And, just like the wrestling fans who believe pro wrestling is real, the people who believe what Rush is saying are a bunch of marks.

You're not saying anything. Species have gone extinct before humans too, that doesn't mean extinction now isn't man made. Now there ARE people around to experience the effects on a massive scale of the increase in the global mean temperature. Most of humanity is coastal and relies on agriculture for food, yet these two areas are the ones most affected by climate change--rising sea levels and shifting local climates changing growing seasons (just ask Australia about the last one).

I did not get that at all from this. What I got is adding an element of showmanship, and taking a firm stance, not vacillate between two ideologies trying to appease all. As for his relationship with his audience, he has been very open about his debt of gratitude to his many listeners. So yeah, I would stick up for him. I appreciate hearing more than one facet and viewpoint to an issue, which I really can not get form typical media. There is almost always more than one valid viewpoint, and additional facts to be weighed

Limbaugh is an entertainer, not a serious policy thinker or journalist. As soon as we just ignore him, he'll eventually go away. Same deal with Ann Coulter.
