Rush - La Villa Strangiato at Pinkpop 1979

I was 19 at that time and saw that performance, it was my first Rush concert.
This was the last performance of the European tour in 1979.
Alex Lefeson hurt his finger because he had a very wild night with his wife,
his finger came between the mattress and the bed.
Info came from: Tjerk Lammers, he was there press manager from WEA record company at that time.

Apart from being a genious, Alex must have spent billions of hours messing around with his guitar and listening to the best albums from blues to progressive rock to classical and many more. He is always improving, and you can see that in a short time span, from 1975 when he played raw rock'n'roll (IMO) to 1979 when he wrote this insane piece. Apart from his musical genious I like this guy a lot for his personality, humble, goofy and friendly. These guys friendship is beatiful.

Dude that solo, I mean my god. Back in my day people would rave about Eddie when Halen originally opened up for Sabbath, and how every night on that tour he was playing out of his skin. Well if you look at Alex, he is literally doing the same thing. Wayyyyyyy before any of us even knew who Eddie was! So truthfully speaking Rush are the real originators! Now mind you in no way shape or form am I dropping turds on EVH, But let's be honest Rush really did start it all, and they were doing sht that bands after them still cannot replicate.

Alex is a beast. Most underrated guitarist of all time. Those sounds are mesmerizing and this was 30 years ago folks. I met Geddy as he was walking in Toronto going to the gym. I got to talk to him for only a minute but told him he was my idol and he appreciated it. Signed my hard hat and got a photo together with him. One of the best days of my life. RUSH FOREVER. So not underrated. Wish people would stop saying this. Millions of Rush fans and guitar players disagree. Rags like Rolling stone are not the gold standard. Fans are. Cream, ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Police, SRV, ELP, Triumph are/were all amazing trios. Best is subjective. Rush certainly had longevity but they're not to everyone's taste as shown by their mainly male audience. I grew up on them and as a Canadian guitarist I like their music very much.

Those dislikes are from Moronic Minority of America. They listen to EDM and Plastic Pop which is what they play at Jack In The Box and other fast food joints. That music has no soul, no spirit, no funk, blues, rock, no band members who sit down and write great songs based on sometimes heavy subject matter about human nature. I don't think those bands will be remembered ten years from now as the great pioneers of their generation, like Rush. Its disposable as a baby's diaper. But youtube is helping to keep the great bands who we came to know on a personal level, like Rush. They beat huge odds for staying power with Permanent Waves and it just took off like wildfire from that point on. They never compromised and no one ever compromised them. They had total artistic control over their songs and that's one of their secrets to huge success.

January10th 2020 we found out the greatest and most influential drummer passed away, Mr. Neil Peart, to brain cancer. Being 57 and seeing every show when they came thru Chicago, this is my J.Lennon moment. Was only 17 when he was killed, but was never close to the Beatles as I was to Rush. This song and concert has always been my favorite of theirs and now it will be played for the next 24 hours. As the saying goes, When I heard that he was gone, a felt a shadow cross my heart. Also feel like I have been punched in the gut and can't seem to catch my breath. RIP our Drummer Boy~

Still blows me away. The pure joy of such a great trio is timeless. The energy that it take to make you feel the music surge through soul - dare I say genius. Too late I said it. For many of us this is the sound track of our lives. A journey we all took together and we will forever be joined by this force. Our hearts mend our troubled souls and our thoughts are cleansed as we remember why we love this group called Rush! To all of us who still believe in the power of music. I raise a toast to all. To Geddy, Alex and Neil. Thank you all for including us in your journey. Forever in our lives. Cheers!

A drummer writing lyrics which yes I know isn't done on stage during a concert but he still played a ton of different styles, while keeping within the confines of the songs never stepping on the rest of the band. Geddy sang and played both keys, and Bass, Alex well Lead and Rhythm.

This isn't just some band. Not to me. Every single day. I wake up with these 3 in my head. Inspiring me every minute to get better, to keep working, to someday hopefully be considered even close to them. If these guys have taught me anything, it's to be different. They've worked hard, been innovative, done it the right way. They deserve so much more than they've had. That solo Al shreds no matter what age is one of my biggest inspirations. Everything this band does. But this song. Not only the fact that it's killer, but to see how far they all got. Even at that young age. It's possible. Whether you're a musician or not. Take a listen to this track and think of how challenging it was. Especially at that age. This band almost didn't make it after Caress Of Steel, their songs were too long, like the Necromancer and the Fountain Of Lamneth. But they released 2112. That 20 minute epic was their response to the people who wanted to change them. Anything's possible. And Rush proved that.

I'll never forget that day when my older friend who had the turntable with that diamond needle, bought the album and rushed home, pardon the pun, and put it on. I was fifteen then and my older friend broke out a big-ass bowl and we're sitting there listening to side "A", and blown away by the end. That is what was so amazing about Rush, the had me and my friends, the few I had at the time, totally blown away and wondering how they could top the latest recording, and they would astound us and come up with something just totally mind bending. Those were the golden years that had us so into Rush, especially as a musician or like me, a drummer. Those were good ole days!

The greatest band on earth, 3 virtuosos, at the height of their (most daring) mastery - Hemispheres. And it all sounded better live than the album (remember, 1979, no cd's). It was surreal. I can't think of too many guitarists who can play at that velocity with a damaged finger. Watch his pinky on the ascending fast runs in the solo, it darts out like a worm out of an underground burrow, nailing the correct note and the right position and quickly reversing direction. It's fascinatingly creepy. What a great player. Well, all of them are. This is a great document of them at the height of their powers as live players.

I have always loved this band!!! Was very fortunate to see them in concert touring after the release of 2112!!! Still the best band I've ever seen in concert!!! ( have seen many concerts from Aerosmith to ZZ Top). This video is amazing!!! It's difficult to put into words!!! Rush fan for life!!!!

That is absolutely amazing with what happened to his finger and watching him play like that he had to be in tremendous pain but flawlessly did that solo .

For me the greatest guitar player that walked the earth. He can crunch any killer solos and play the most heartfelt tender piece, often in the same song. We were blessed that fate brought those three unearthly musicians together!!! Just incredible.

Yeah, he has played Fenders for far more time than he played Ricks in concert. But since he was playing Rick's when I discovered Rush, I've never really accepted the Fenders.

the more I watch Lifeson...the more I do not understand why his name isn't atop the lists..there is no one more versatile and excellent at every facet of that versatility .. .incredibly gifted and successfully experimental.. This band 6 hands 6 feet. 60 digits ...that have created a body of work that is uniquely RUSH . to think it's actually over in terms of live gigs....makes me feel all kinds of emotion.. we took album...tour ....album...tour...album...tour..for granted for so long. we had no idea how lucky we were

Thank You, WorkingMan. I can't believe this video actually exists! I was 16 at the time, when my high school friends took me to my first shows. Performances like this became permanently wired into my brain. Going to see Rush to me and my crew was like what Catholics must feel when having an audience with the Pope. I watch this and get goosebumps and all choked up.

They were fierce back then. I saw them in the very beginning, before Neil Peart when they were still playing Toronto bars, and then thru the first couple albums when they'd open for other bands, by 78 with the release of A Farewell To Kings and the surprise hit Closer To The Heart, they began headlining arenas and they never looked back. Rush up to 78/79 is my favourite period of the band's career. They were still young and hungry, their first taste of the big time. Ferocious live shows. The greatest band Canada has ever produced and one of the top 5 bands of all-time. Skinny Alex was a monster live. Even here with a wrecked ring finger he doesn't back off at all with that ripping solo. What a band. We were lucky to have had them for 40 years. I lost count of the number of times I saw them live... maybe 30? The best concerts were the late 70's ones. That's just me though. My opinion. Nothing more.

I first saw them on the late summer leg of this tour in ‘79 when they started rolling out Permanent Waves songs (just before PW started getting airplay). They definitely played Freewill and LaVilla but can’t recall what others. I was a lifelong fan after seeing that show.

The phonetic timing these three have or had, Niel, your the best, is unmatched by almost any band ever. It and their talent for music is why they make your heart feel really good. They really are one of the best bands this planet has ever seen and I thank God I was tossed into the time frame they were here.
