“It sounds like different songs”. That’s because they played the intro to at least a half dozen songs, going all the way back to their first album before ending with a GREAT performance of “Spirit of Radio”. And Geddy Lee (the dark haired guitarist, lol) not only plays bass guitar AND sings, but he also plays keyboard with his feet ALL AT THE SAME TIME!! So...yeah...this is why the RUSH Army always says that RUSH is more musically talented than any other band in the world...EVER!! Great reaction video, young fella. I really enjoy your reactions.

And they where leaving music or atleast performing. They are also extremely universal. The words some are shake spear and some are little bible verses, on and on. Just amazing and never wanting to sell out to the masses for $$$$$, that's what set them apart from others...Spirt of Radio, subdivitions, Limelight are the more radio played. They played for us. We are a strong RUSH following...maybe you'll join us..No Cap.
I love watching a new generation find and fall in love with the greatest three man band to ever grace a stage. Keep digging! There is 40 years worth of Rush to explore.
In order to understand this intro you have to realise that every single one of these riffs were the opening riffs to a lot of their songs.
Geddy sings, plays bass guitar, and kicks peddles for synthesizer. Then he changes it, he throws the bass aside, sings and plays the keyboard while stepping on bass peddles. And it goes like that for the next two and a half hours. Iv had seats right in front of him and it is/was and always will be phenomenal.
This is the "R30 Overture" from their 2004 R30 tour. A medley composed of one song taken from each of their first 6 albums: Finding My Way (Rush); Anthem (Fly by Night); Bastille Day (Caress of Steel); A Passage to Bangkok (2112); Cygnus X-1 (A Farewell to Kings); Hemispheres (Hemispheres)....then going into The Spirit of Radio (full song), which is the first track from their 7th album, Permanent Waves....no cap. Edit: the instrumental parts they repeat are called "riffs"

Jojo….more than anything, it is the drummer's job to keep the band's tempo. Being a drummer for the past 38 years, I cannot stress this enough. If the drummer can keep the band in time, anything over and above that is gravy! Neil Peart had pot full of gravy and a wicked ladle he served it with.

RUSH was like, hold my beer, eh? Fixed that for you. ;-)
I think the idea behind this song was to add to, “The Spirit if Radio,” as if you were tuning the radio at the beginning looking for a hit song and all you get is old Rush radio hits! Gotta be 10 songs in there! Not many bands can take 10 songs and use them for an into and still fill the other 165 minutes if their concert! Yes, the 2 concerts I got to go to were 3 hours long with a little intermission in the middle... 😜
Absolutely nobody get’s down like “the holy trinity”
You know you are good when your bassist plays the “air drums”. RUSH!
I've been a Rush fan since day 1, and what amazes me the most is the full sound 3 people can generate. They have been the best of friends throughout their career, and, I'm guessing, they had a similar relationship with their "roadies".
JoJo, love your reactions! Geddy Lee on bass and vocals and Alex Lifeson is the guitar god. Neil is playing roto toms that have a congo sound. You also get a good shot of Geddy playing some synths with his feet. Greatest band of all time!
@dannyrauda2370

I would say that they are the best musicians ever there is nobody else like them
"What's he playing with his feet?" Organ pedals. They typically produce a droning bass note, although I think he's using them here to trigger synthesizer chords. Like a keyboard for your feet. "The wiggly thing with the guitar." Is called a tremolo bar, or "whammy bar." As you noted, it's used to quickly and aggressively bend the pitch of a note.
@seamusburke639
3 жыл бұрын
Technical name for the foot pedals is "Taurus" pedals. Imagine one octave of a keyboard, but mapped for your feet instead of your fingers. The original Taurus unit Rush used in the 70's had its own analog synth unit built into it, but Geddy is using a modern version by Roland that he plugs into an external synth to give him whatever sample he wants via MIDI.
@SeanVedell

The pedals Geddy uses also trigger samples of parts they just can’t reproduce just the three of them on stage. It’s not a cheat if you’re using samples of yourself.
@chrisandersen5635
3 жыл бұрын
Yes. They can also program sounds into it. At the end, there is a piano Chord Emaj followed by a glissando, basically, a thumb dragged down the white keys from right to left, that Geddy, the dark haired one, played for the album, but here triggers it with a touch of the foot cuz, ya know, playing bass and singing already. Plus, can i just say, i lost my shit when ya started clapping. Was laughing my ass off; ya got it right away. You screwed, yer one of us now!! Welcome to the family ✌️
It's a compilation of so many of their songs...and it's freaking awesome!
Rush concerts, in the later years, were a 3+ hour event with no opening act. This is an 11 minute melody of all the great songs that, unfortunately, didn't make the cut for this particular concert.

That polka version is so funny
Seeing as how nobody has mentioned it. When Geddy Lee started using modelling software and thus did away with the need to use actual amplifiers his part of the stage looked really empty. So as a joke he put down tumble dryers, soda machines and sometimes automatic grills, all in perfect working order. The Tumble Dryers would be filled with tour shirts which when the show was over would be given to the audience. The crew would actually mike the machines up.
Now, have fun finding and reacting to each song they performed in this medley! Bringing me back in time.

One of the greatest bands of all time! Neil Peart R.I.P. No other band will ever compare. They loved making music and loves their fans.
Surprisingly, it's not always Neil keeping the tempo, many times Alex is carrying the time signature, while Neil gets to go wild.
Rush were previously known for playing a medley of older songs at the end of their shows. For their 30th Anniversary shows they switched it up & started with a medley of some older songs that they hadn't played in a while. I saw them on this tour at the NEC in Birmingham UK & this opening blew me away especially hearing snippets of Bastille Day & Anthem.

P.S. as to the "congo drums", those are concert toms (like you might see with a marching band), tuned to a very high pitch. The high tuning of the drum allows the sound that comes out of it to "ring" at a higher pitch I(more like a "crack!").
Please listen to and enjoy "Leave That Thing Alone" Rush jam you will love

Bastille Day.... Just love that beginning!!
Great reaction!! As you’ve see. In the comments below, this is a medley of 6 different songs from earlier in their career. With 30 yrs and about 16 albums (at the time of this video which is the 30 year reunion) The hardest thing for them to do is pick a set list! They do a 3 hour show and can’t get to a lot of songs the fans want to hear, so they do these medleys to get some songs played that they wouldn’t have time to do in the regular set list. Really creative how they are able to “sew them all together” as you said! Just brilliant musicians! FYI: those are synth pedals Geddy (dark hair) is playing in the video. Alex (blonde hair) plays them sometimes too and even Neil can set up triggers on his drum set to play a keyboard sequence! They are all participating in all aspects of the songs! Two of them you were really rockin out to were “Hemispheres” and “A Passage to Bankok” (which is about a dream of theirs to travel around and smoke the best weed from all around the world)...great song!! Check them out!
Not only is this intro lit. Your reaction is lit to go with it. You always put a nice humor to your reactions. And Rush were masters of doing transitions but bringing back to where the song started. They are indeed poets and playwrights of Rock music
They called it “intro” cause it was the intro to a SET at the concert- bro- they have SO MUCH music and songs spanning over 40 years- they were just trying to give a sampling of the early stuff cause that’s what the fans wanted to hear
It is the ultimate Rush roller coaster - it is the intro to six songs from six different albums, an unbroken, perfectly transitioned journey through a catalog of songs, finally winding up in Spirit Of Radio. The guitarist (and vocals, and foot pedals) is Alex Lifeson. He's one of the best guitarists alive.
The blond guitarist is Alex Lifeson. The bass player and lead singer is Geddy Lee. And you know who the drummer is... I LOVE watching reaction videos of Rush. It's like watching it for the first time all over again. Excellent commentary, sir. All my best to you!
Rock isn't supposed to make you feel angry. It's supposed to make you express whatever emotion you already feel and maybe bring up to a more positive emotion. If you're angry, it's an outlet. If you're sad, it's a coping mechanism. If you're happy, it's a celebration!
Awesome to see your enthusiasm for one of the greatest bands ever and arguable the best live concert experience I've been to. Their ability to play complex music and hit the transitions perfectly each time live for nearly 3 hours is unmatched. I can tell you dig Rush so down the rabbit hole you go 😀
I love this format because make Jo Jo is real , funny, and has charisma. Music is medicine for the soul. Thanks. FERNANDO the PERUVIAN LAKER FAN
You have 40 years of rabbit hole to discover. RUSH RULES thank you for your reactions. Good times!
Absolutely love watching your videos ! Being a drummer I have been a Rush fan from the beginning ! Glad to know Rush is gaining new fans all the time !
Love your channel. Homie. Rush is simply the best. Been listening to this music for years.
The instrument he played with his feet are foot pedals that trigger keyboard/synth sounds. This enables Geddy Lee to play bass and keyboards at the same time in many Rush songs. The "wiggly thing" on the guitar is known as a tremelo arm or whammy bar. It allows the strings on the guitar to be stretched or relaxed (changing their pitch) to create differing vibrato sounds. I am enjoying watching a young man begin his journey into the lush wonderland that is Rush. Welcome to the addiction. If you like Rush, you'll probably enjoy Yes, as well (probably the older stuff more than the the later stuff).
I’m so excited about your reaction. That’s how I felt the first time I heard them!
The R30 Overture is how they opened every show on this 2004 30th anniversary tour. Someone else listed each of the six song intros stitched together before The Spirit of Radio. One song off each of the first seven studio albums, in order. Geddy has Taurus bass pedal to play bass while playing keyboards, and he can switch it to playing synth parts with his foot while playing bass.
It has been said that drummers use metronomes, but, metronomes use Neil Peart.

Well said.
Once again very perceptive. The intro is a medley of intros from various songs from their beginnings. Also, they are first and foremost virtuoso musicians. They do write music like one would write lyrics. How you were explaining writing a hook to a song is a good analogy of that. I enjoy your reactions to my favorite band. RIP Neil!
It is indeed a medley before the song starts.
I kind of dig where you were going with saying Neil was laying it down or holding it together, but they all were. There is a reason that a three legged chair never teeters.
No cap bro, your reactions are lit and you are a very perceptive young man!
They both play Taurus Pedals with there feet. Like keyboards for your feet. Mind Blown. On the Guitar it's his Tremolo bar. Gives the note vibrato.
Enjoy your reaction videos, ty for them! RUSH!!!!!!

It's an Overture
It would take me a while to name every Rush song the just medlied. WOW! JoJo, thanks!
It's an intro, in that it eventually leads into "Spirit of Radio", but technically this can be better called an "Overture". It's a small sample of many of their most recognizable songs, mainly the intros of each. Very likely, most if not all of those song bits will be played again later in the concert in their entirety. This just hypes the crowd to expect those songs later.
That intro is a combination of several of their best songs. Songs are about everything from smoking pot, outer space to the French Revolution.
Jojo!! I so love watching you experience the incredible trio that is RUSH. Hippies, transiting headbangers like myself. I get the biggest kick out of your expressions! Rock on kiddo! Still strongly recommend Savatage!

You went down the rush rabbit hole. I’ve been seeing a lot of your rush vids pop up.
this sounds like a medley of a bunch of their songs. neil peart writes the songs, getty lee (black hair) sings and plays bass and synth, alex leifson plays guitar
You're awesome! Very observant
Those foot pedals are a Moog Taurus II. Geddy and Alex use them both to add instruments and sequences in such as strings, pianos, bass notes and other SFX.
Love that you got Neil's last name right! What a legend
I’ve seen them twice, and let me tell you... probably the best band I’ve seen!
Your reaction is the BEST.
I envy this kid Getting too hear all this music for the first time
Also, I think the name of the track is meant to playfully echo the singer, Geddy Lee’s words are the end of a concert, “Best! Audience! Ever!” - *crowd roars* 😂
The one with the black hair, he ain't doing much .... yet!! LOL keep it up. Love your reviews!
He was playing the keyboard with his foot while playing the bass. That bar on the guitar is called a wammy bar it stretches the strings a little when using it.
Yes it's the begennings amd bridges of several older rush songs and yes they be some viciously aggressive musicians
Their music is usually aspirational - saying, “we could be this good, if we try.”
Another great video LFR! Keep up the good work! Might I suggest either One Little Victory or Animate by Rush for your next video? Both are musical masterpieces. Or if you're looking for something that's 'deep' might I suggest Between Sun and Moon. Thanks for the entertainment!
Check out The Garden by Rush on the Clockwork Angels Tour. Lyrics are by Neil Peart (he wrote most of their lyrics) and it's the last song on their last album.. what an ending. You'll see a very different side of Rush!
I agree with the other comments it was a history lesson of songs from the past .
A good drummer keeps time for the whole band.
An 11 minute intro of a 3 1/2 show that I had the privilege of seeing on the 30th anniversary tour. More like 12 songs stitched together .
I nm miss you JoJo ..can't find you ..for a year .til now
It's not just Neil, it's Neil and Getty the bass and the drums keeping that back beat and then Alex ads the spice
This is a medley of multiple songs ranging from their first album onward, so yes, this is fair as they did not stop once!
Geddy Lee (brown hair) is an awesome bassist
3:31 *zzzzzzzzzactly what this intro is.......a panoply of Rush song intros stitched masterfully together!*
this was a collage of some of their songs mashed together for an intro
Saying RUSH blows your mind is like saying.........well RUSH IS mind blowing. You’re starting to get it. That’s just the level they are on. They only go up. Up! Up! And Away!
It's a medley of some of their best older songs that I'm guessing Geddy couldn't sing high enough for any more. For the fans.
