  • @josephroberts6865
    @josephroberts68652 ай бұрын

    No one should be issued an instrument rating that can’t even copy an IFR clearance. Since the pilot was issued a clearance he is completely unfamiliar with, how does he know he’s got enough fuel to fly the assigned clearance? That clearance would be a great time for an instructor to take his garmin away and see if he can plot the route on a map to determine fuel requirement manually. Technology is great until it fails.

    As a young Air Force meteorologist, pilot weather briefings were a pretty significant part of my duties. NO ONE took off without me signing off on their DD form 175-1. Over years, I learned almost all of the waypoints around my state, and would reference these on my weather briefings. The pilots really appreciated this.

    Not trying to be funny here but was this guy drunk? He showed serious signs of mental incapacitation. Did he have a fall recently and hit his head? Not kidding. This guy seemed completely out of it. Even the way he questioned whether he needed to read back the IFR clearance because it was in his FMS. Then, when he did read it back he added a lot of GPS waypoints that ATC never gave him in the initial IFR clearance. Then a couple of taxi errors!!!! He should have taxied back to the hangar and shut it down. If this pilot checked the IM SAFE acronym I would hope he would have realized he was NOT ready to go flying on this particular day.

    The clearance only includes the entry and exit points of airways. The garmin puts in all the intermediate points from the database, which are necessary to navigate the course. The pilot (and ideally the controller as well) should know this. But there is nothing about this exchange that gives any confidence that the pilot could fly this clearance, especially if he has any failures in the automation.
