Running Waterfalls in a Jar (Moss Terrarium)

I wanted to put waterfalls in a terrarium for a while now, but I wasn't able to make it happen in previous renditions. I also had other things to work on. Nothing beats a standard jungle-style terrarium, but I think this is a really cool concept that's awesome to watch. That said, you really need to see it in person to appreciate the view. The waterfalls are fairly substantial, but the video can only translate it so well.
Enjoy the build and let me know what you think about it in the comments!

When I was a teenager, my mother built a working waterfall/rock garden in a corner of the living room. I always thought that was pretty cool. She also loved and built a terrarium in a large water bottle, among other containers. How she would have loved to do this one. Absolutely beautiful.

May your mama rest in peace. Thank you for sharing this story with us! This is my plan in our living room! 😃 we are building new and we have a drain in one corner for this purpose. Id love to see pictures of her creation. We are off grid and in dry Montana, plus a wood stove... And have to run a humidifier especially in the winter. One day I thought.. Why have this ugly, noisy hunk of plastic? When we can have a beautiful sttement in living room instead. 😃

Silicone pro here, less is more. As long as you have a clean surface you'll get adhesion. To smooth, use water or weak alcohol solution like windex. It won't stick to your fingers, but I'd still recommend gloves. Surface area beats volume. Also, super glue will degrade in water and toxify it. Poly expanding foam also has less than wonderful qualities that make it one of my least favorite materials. You can use clear water wash resin and a uv light to set the bottom. The moss and the rocks in the bottom will also help with filtration. Fantastic project.

Dude has some serious patience that I do not have. I would have used a standard bottle stand they sell on amazon, and 3d printed the interior piece with lots of small pores to hold vegetation. The focal point would be a bonsai tree at the bottom, and I would not drill any holes in glass, but invert the jar, and have everything run through a cork stopper, and a 3d printed return system instead of a filth collecting tray. He likely spent 200 hours on that, and I would not spend more than 4. Dude is a legend.

Love it! It's magical. When I was a little girl my friend and I made a rock garden for fairies in an old tin washbowl, sticks for trees, moss and a mirror for a pond with some tiny glass swans on it 'borrowed' from my Nan (who wasn't too impressed when she found out). We put it in the garden and checked every day for signs of fairy residence but to no avail. In the end Nan reclaimed the swans and we thought that was why no fairies turned up. We believed that for quite some time too. Maybe they will find their way to your lovely creation instead! 🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️🧚‍♀️🙂🙂🙂

It's really beautiful. The only thing I would do differently, is to feed the inlet tube in from a hole in the bottom, so it would be concealed behind the waterfall. The power cord could also be fed through a hole in the plastic container. All in all, it is very well done. I would be keen to try make something like that too.
