Running in South Yorkshire is never flat! Worsbrough 5 mile

Спорт

Worsbrough 5 mile… it’s one of the most local races I can do, between this and the Spencer’s Dash, and the upcoming Barnsley 10k. All on my doorstep, within a stones throw. Local. I know these roads like the back of my hands, I’ve trained on them, day in, day out. It’s either a benefit or a negative. However you perceive it, what strength you take from it. It’s still racing.
I’m fresh out of marathon season, still in recovery mode, still consuming everything in sight. No real filter, but still driven and still motivated to go faster, over the marathon distance, especially now. But now is the time for recovery, racing for the sake of racing almost. Pulling on my club colours, representing Barnsley and doing the best I can, when I toe the line. Which in summer, almost feels like every week!
Being from Yorkshire we love the term 'value for money' and you don't get much better in the road running scene with 4 races for £12, coming at an absolute bargain! The South Yorkshire Road League is a series of 4x 5 mile events throughout April - May, across typically hilly 5 mile loops around the various areas of South Yorkshire. We don't do flat around here.
To take part throughout you have to be a member of a South Yorkshire Athletic / Running Club. You can race once or at all four races for £12, with you being a series counter by doing 3 out of the 4 events. You must do the last one to count in the series. With prizes up for grabs, it can be a great way to measure your fitness, or fatigue, throughout April and May. The races have taken place across a variety of courses throughout the years, with a different selection of 5 mile loops being offered every year. Largely based on clubs who nominate themselves to organise one and volunteer to host. This year see's the events taken place at:
- Elsecar (3rd of April)
- Lodge Moor (17th of April)
- Worsbrough (1st of May)
- Ingbirchworth (22nd of May)

Another great video Gareth - thankfully got over my wobble at the finish - soon enough - think it was dehydration - Back in the day when we used to do flat SYRL races around places like Doncaster and Askern - Worsbrough was the toughest of the 4 -Now it is flat compared to Lodge Moor !! Think it still has a proper race licence as an accurately measured course - used to great fun when we did 2 laps in the Midwood 10 !!

It must be wonderful to race on the flat. The last time I managed it was in 2013 at the Spen Greenaway 10k and Pocklington. Haven't got the faintest what times I could post on a flat course at any of the distances. Thanks for another informative vlog. Looking forward to Ingbirchworth and posting my fastest 5 mile time this year.

It’s hard running up hills but coming down seems harder 🫤

In the days when it was Road League across South Yorkshire, rather than the outskirts of Barnaley and North Sheffield, there were plenty of flat courses. Hayfield Lakes. Dinnington. Armthorpe. Sadly risk assessment culture in certain councils put paid to them.
