Unintended Acceleration: Toyota's Safety Crisis and Regulatory Responses Pt 1
August 2009. An unimaginable tragedy unfolded on the roads of San Diego.
Off-duty Californian Highway Patrolman Mark Saylor, a vehicle inspector, was driving a dealer loaner, a Lexus ES350. Three passengers were with him. Without warning, the Lexus began accelerating. Before long, it had passed the 100-mph mark and was still climbing. Saylor’s foot was stamping on the brake, but he couldn’t find a way to slow the car down.

I was working as a Technician at a Toyota dealer here in Canada during this event. We had 3 levels of solutions. 1) to remove all driver floor mats that weren't designed specifically for that model of car and if they were OEM, they could not be double stacked, ie. rubber OEM mat on top of OEM carpet mat. Good that we did because some people had 4 or 5 mats stacked on top of each other. Some of the mats were just cut up pieces of flooring carpet or rugs. 2) We also had templates to cut the accelerator pedal corners down to size and 3) replace the accelerator pedal with a Denso brand unit ( or remove the Denso brand unit, can't really remember, lol) there were 2 different brands of accelerator pedals that the factory was using and we were instructed to crawl under the dash and see if it was a Denso brand pedal or not. also just knowing how cars work could have saved a bunch of lives. just pop it into neutral and come to a stop like normal...lhe engine will be bouncing off the limiter and making a bunch of noise, but you and all your love ones will be safe. A good one also is just to turn the key off..but push-to-start was becoming a thing around that time and pushing the button while the car is in motion won't do a thing.
Toyota fixed the problem and admitted the problem , will drive a Toyota any day 😮
Put the damn gearbox on "N" for God's sake !!
Turn the key off? Put vehicle in neutral?

Stay safe. Drive a manual.

hey i saw you on another video comments where people didn't know how planes work lol. But yes manual = more fun
This is why I drive a manual and definitely not one with fly by wire.

do you also not use electricity because such things as electrical fires exist?
I haven,t driven an auto in years, never a newer one. Can you put the transmission in neutral? Or is the gear selector an electronic switch that won't respond? Either way I got a clutch pedal to push in if that happened in any vehicle I'm rolling in.

A lot of autos don't even have a lever anymore. Most of them have either buttons or a dial so an electrical issue could stop it responding and you wouldn't be able to put it in neutral at all.
Unnecessary deaths; push and hold the power button, everything will turn off no matter how much pressure is on your gas pedal.

That's worse. Imagine going 100mph and suddenly losing all control of the car.

@@Playingwithproxies @haywagonbmwe46touring54 , do you know what power steering means? And maybe do you perhaps understand why turning the car off completely might turn that very useful power steering off? Especially in a car going over a 100mph with various new fly by wire features that require power to operate? The best thing they could have done is put the car in neutral and steer the car on to the hard shoulder until it slows down on its own whilst applying the brakes. Trucks have a sort of similar issue where the brakes can completely fail and the truck has so much momentum it doesn't stop for a good mile, they even have special areas on roads for runaway trucks to safely steer into and slow down in neutral.
Cars should have a emergency kill switch

Neutral
I don't understand how these people can think why not just put it in neutral why not just turn off the key like you call 911 before putting it in neutral or shutting the key off what the actual hell is wrong with the people in my opinion it's Darwin's law in action😢
