Fellow Aussie, 46yrs. I got the 'Tougher Than leather' cassette in 1988 after a mate at school let me listen to it one lunchtime. I remember spending the whole lunchbreak listening to the album and bought it a few days later. Even my older sister knew the words to 'Mary Mary' within a few weeks :)

It will never happen again. I’m 51 now. I commented a year ago about going to their concert in the early 90s and it was just amazing. Run on one side and DMC on the other with JMJ up high in the middle on the turn tables. They started the show with Run’s House. The bass drum on the up beat went through your chest. Artists just do it for money and fame now…these guys did it for fun and respect for the music and they are legends because of it.

Great choice! Public Enemy's album Apocalypse 91 was the first hip hop album I ever listened to. It blew my 12 year old mind. I've loved that era of hip hop ever since.

Man.. it was 1988 and I was 18 years old! The golden age of rap was just starting and the mighty Run DMC in truth.. were on the ropes! They had a five year domination and stronghold on hip hop culture! No one came even close in those years between 1983 and 1988. But.. by early 1987 the rap landscape was changing fast.This record showed the world that the great Run DMC had a little more juice left in the tank to compete in the changing landscape of hip hop! Looking back.. I’ll always believe that if they would’ve dropped Beats to The Rhyme on video instead of Mary Mary, they could have delayed the inevitable for a few more years possibly! At 50 years old now, I smile and give thanks that I was a witness to arguably the greatest rap group of all time in their prime! Run DMC and Jam Master Jay! 💥💯👊🏽

I agree. they started getting outdated once Rakim,Kane,Kool G Rap, Just Ice, Slick Rick Krs One and many others came out but they were still able to hang for a bit. Fortunately they had some resurgence in 93 when they hooked up with Pete Rock and did "Down with The Kings" which gave them a boost but by then West Coast rap was taking over and the Likes of Snoop and Dr Dre were dominating the charts.

Most important group in hip hop history.

The influence of Run DMC can’t be underestimated. They didn’t start hip-hop. It started a decade earlier in the Bronx. And while we owe the Bronx DJs, MCs, and B-Boys a huge debt for being the pioneers, we also have to recognize Run-DMC for their role in spreading the culture outside the streets of NYC. It was Run DMC that introduced most of the world to hip-hop. Not only were they incredible artists, but they were truly ambassadors.

This beat is still the dope as hell , and can't be matched 🔥🔥🔥

Still hits hard in 2022. Sounds great in the trunk.

There was a young man, about 18 or 19, listening to Peter Piper on his phone shooting hoops by my house the other day. I aaked him what he knew about that, and he said that he loves Run DMC. This is timeless Hip Hop. Shit brings me to tears it's so Great.

This was my favorite song when I was a kid, I loved the echoes they put in on DMCs vocals. I went from Fat Boys to Kool Moe Dee to these guys and Beastie boys.. then I got corrupted by Too Short, NWA, and rap a lot records. NIP was crazy, once my parents heard that it was over . 🤣
