The beat is sampled from a song called “Take me to the Mardi Gras” by jazz musician Bob James. LL had recorded Rock the Bells using this sample but RUN DMC was already using this in their live shows so Russell refused to release the LL version and he recorded it again with what we have now, and the rest is history! I think they all came away ok but Bob James needs some respect on his name too!

The year was 1986 when I first heard this song walking into my cousins house in West Covina. They had this song rocking on the 2 turn tables. My mind exploded at how dope the beat was as my cousin was looping it and scratching to the beat. This was Hip Hop at its finest. Run DMC were the kings of rap at that time.

My homie would play this song in his Lowered Chevy luv truck . Which had 2 12's Cerwin -Vegas with the ext cab for the speakers 🔊. The bed was covered, but had a limo antenna 📡. The rims were enkei saw blades . Did i mention it was Slammed to the Ground. To the point it would get stuck on speed bumps 😆 Good times in Bakersfield in 1986.

I'm from Riverside, CA and I had thought I heard this bumping in the Samurais and Nissan trucks outside Poly High School, but I finally heard it clearly on someone's system in the parking lot while walking into a Stater Bros market. Mind blown. Took me five days to find a record store that had the album. Made tapes for all the homies and it was all we listened to for weeks and weeks.

Man I haven’t heard another person use the term “skating rink” in forever…when I was a kid in Va during the 70’s (I was born in DC in 71) the skating rink closest to my house was called “Wheel-a-While” & it was THE place to be & the really big really old one that was in town (old town Alexandria) would get nuts! Like don’t let kids go nuts! I went to visit my mom a few months ago & I’ll be damned….Wheel-a-While is still there 🤷🏼♂️🖤🥶y’all be safe

Run DMC's first two albums are a few of the greatest of all time in their genre. They're now timeless classics that were legends in their day. I wish they worked 2x harder around when this album came out and later. What happened to Jay is sickening. He knew what he was doing was wrong. It's right there in the lyrics again and again. I'm glad he finally got justice in court. RIP JMJ. Bless you Run and D. You're both eternal heroes of the sport.
