Run DMC - "I’ll personally kick your ass out of hip-hop"

It's rare that you get to play Jackanory with somebody as game-changing as DMC, but that's the position FACT found themselves in here.
One third of Run DMC, one of the most influential groups in hip-hop history (and not just for their music, either - their style is still being ripped off today) DMC hung out with us in London to promote Adidas's new #UniteAllOriginals campaign -- check it out here: www.adidas.com/...
The campaign features the surviving members of Run DMC and Canadian producer A-Trak collaborating on new music - a remix of the group's classic 'My Adidas', as you may have guessed - as well as a fan-controlled video. On the above video (part two of two) DMC talks to FACT's Mr. Beatnick about the problems with American radio and modern hip-hop, about the role Jam Master Jay played in DJ culture, and much more.

    @@dddlll2471 Money came to hip hop because of Run DMC. THEY were the group that took hip hop out of the "community" to the rest of America. THAT was when hip hop started REALLY becoming lucrative. "Walk This Way" had white kids, for the first time, blasting hip hop music in their Daddy's Monte Carlos when I was coming up in Brooklyn..

    Jam Master Jay was a class act. He NEVER received billing. It was never billed 'RUN DMC and Jam Master Jay' it was always RUN DMC. He could've beefed about that but he never did. That's class.

  • @aprisia

    @aprisia

    He didn't need physical billing. If you just listened to their music, they gave him top billing in almost every song. Listen back to the first album, almost every 3rd verse is about or has a shoutout to how badass Jam Master Jay is. He was the first one to be the subject of one of their songs. DMC doesn't get one of those until King of Rock, referring to the album itself, and Run's is not until Tougher than Leather. Run and DMC never let Jam Master Jay forget that how important he was. Even to this day it's true, find the interview where someone asks DMC about why there will never be new Run DMC stuff. His answer is, "They murdered my band.".

    Hip hop got hi-jacked by idiots. Hip hop used to bring people together. Doug-e fresh used to rap about positive topics. Break dancing was fun and we didn't give a shit about color. All we cared about was a good floor and the right jam. Then colors came on the scene back in the late 80's then everyone wanted to be a flipping gang-banger. Thanks a lot ICE-T for your contribution. Thanks for the legacy NWA. I watched a movement start out positive, unified and just fun to be apart of. Now look at it! It's a mother fucking disaster!

    For me, I can never take the side of blaming the artists. It's not the artists' fault that people want to listen to their music over others. They just make it but people have a choice for what they listen to so society deserves the blame as well.

    I said this years ago, that I thought Hip Hop was being rubber stamped. I even went as far as writing a college 20 page paper called "The Problem With Hip-Hop." I gave a presentation in class and the younger classmates totally disagreed with me. This was 7 or 8 years ago. Most of my classmates and colleagues didn't realize that I was a musician and had been a guitarist and keyboardist since I was 7 years old. I saw the trajectory of the current hip hop and pop scene and it started to sound homogenized to me. I totally agree with this video.

    I can't even follow what DMC explained as he said it perfectly FACTS! It saddens me that the real hip hop pioneers got so F%^KT when they brought this music to the people and now they have exploited and cookie cutter manufactured artificial autotuned music today that people call "Hip Hop". I'm not saying it's all bad but most of the pioneers are literally broke and I feel so bad knowing that contracts and better management today with the help of technology has found it's way in the music main stream. As a 56 year old man understand this! I'm not a hater of todays music, I'm just a guy that was awaken by the perfect beat and today I still can't find anything on the radio that brings the magic. I guess life is about evolution but dam it's hard to accept it sometimes.

    I don’t know hip hop but i can understand where DMC is coming from when he says hip hop sounds and looks the same and that old school was better and more original. I can sympathize because the same thing happened to rock, i’ll explain: when DMC said back then they had nwa, run dmc, de la soul, ice t, eric b and rakim also public enemy, big daddy kane etc. They were the same people but making different, original music with a more unique sound and D knows this and he’s right. In the classic rock era (the rock equivalent of old school hip hop) you had the beatles, the rolling stones, the who, cream, deep purple, led zeppelin, black sabbath and queen etc. They each were the same people, same artists but putting their own sound into their music where you could know from the first few seconds just who the artist was. There was none of the “oh they sound like such and such” no, they sounded like themselves. Funny how history tends to repeat itself. Then again, it’s just my opinion.
