Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show I'm your host Paul aka the guy who's been running through your girls mind all day and also from the police.
2020 is almost over but we have a couple of big releases to close us out including the new Hulu Horror starring Sarah Paulson.
Before we get into the ending of it I think we have to discuss the overall plot and though it is relatively simple there are a lot of nuances here to go over.
If you like the video I'd like it if you liked it and if you loved it then please subscribe as we do videos like this each and every day and you don't wanna miss them.
Anyway, Run follows mother and daughter pair Diane and Chloe who share a very close relationship. We're told that when Chloe was born she faced a lot of health problems including Arrhythmia which I've definitely pronounced wrong, Hemochromatosis, which I've definitely pronounced and Asthma which I've definitely pronounced right and I apologise for being an absolute moron all of the time. She also apparently has Diabetes and is paralysed which means that she has spent the majority of her life in a wheel chair.
Because of these afflictions the character has to take various medication and though it is initially a worry that she will struggle at University, Diane is confident that she can survive.
Or at least she says in public.
In reality, Diane is a controlling mother that is actually drugging her daughter with dog drugs and not the good ones, I know what them scooby snacks are. Throughout the movie Chloe starts to slowly unearth the truth about this and we watch as she discovers things aren't what they seem.
You see Diane actually kidnapped Chloe when she was very little after losing her own baby. She has purposely been keeping Chloe under her control because of the psychological issues caused from losing her own daughter.
Chloe learns of this and attempts to escape Diane's control but after she foils her attempts to get away Chloe takes matters into her own hand. She downs a bottle of poison and thus Diane must take her to the hospital to get her stomach pumped.
Knowing that she's likely going to alert the staff to what's going on, Diane tries to take Chloe home but she leaves a note for one of the doctors that causes her to call security. Just as Diane is about to leave the hospital Chloe puts her foot down...literally and manages to stop Diane in time for the police to show up and shoot her.
Diane is left apparently paralysed and we watch as Chloe visits her seven years later. However a big twist comes at the end of the movie when Chloe coughs up the same pills that she was being sedated with and we realise that she has been returning the favour to Diane and keeping her in a life of paralysis.
Now though it seems like a pretty straight forward plot and twist I actually think there's a lot going on with it and the film has some neat little call backs and an overall metaphor that I think works really well.
Now firstly we start off with Diane helpless in bed as she prays for her daughter to be ok. A wheelchair is pushed towards her by a member of staff and this actually foreshadows the ending of the movie.
In that we see Diane once more in a hospital bed however this time Chloe is the one in the chair and not a helpful doctor who will allow her to escape the situation for better or worse.
On the whole I actually think that the film very much represents a parental child relationship and the story of some find it difficult watching their kid go off to college.
Now the movie is a horror film so it does take things and subvert them to the exetreme, however I think that throughout the movie that the clues are definitely there.

UPDATE: The screenwriter tweeted me and they said good job on the video so thank you everyone who helped it to get posted about to that point. Some cool little details are: Derry Maine is of course a reference to IT and Mrs Bates is a reference to Psycho. They also have a shot that’s almost exactly the same as that film when Diane is in the car and has her finger at her mouth. Will update if there’s any more.

sorry did we watch the same movie? she doesn’t miss her “mom”, it’s payback, karma, revenge. she doesn’t visit her out of love?? she goes there to show off the life diane never wanted her to have. she clearly went to university, got married, has a good job, and children, and she’s learning to WALK. she brings up her real parents, and probably knows if her “mom” could, she would try to kidnap her again. diane needs chloe, she would do anything we literally saw that. she’s probably keeping a close eye on her and making sure with the drugs that she can’t escape. literally keep your friends close and enemies closer.

The pills at the end are not the same as the animal muscle relaxers Diane was giving to Chloe (green and grey). These pills are black and green and look more like Carbatrol. I loved the twist at the end. I don't think that she was giving those pills to her mother, out of love. If this were true, then I'd be very concerned for her future mental health and the well-being of her husband and daughter. I do think that it is hard to not have intense feelings for someone who raised you but she also abused her. I do think the emotions that she has for her are complex though. When I think of the end, her last words to her mother, before she fell, come to mind "I don't need you...". Even though she didn't say it, I could hear her finishing the sentence in her mind, with "You need me". I don't think that she is ever going to let her mother forget what she did to her, I think that this is why she's doing it... And she's telling her all about her life. As if to keep repeating "I don't need you" and look at how well I'm doing without you.

  • @selenenoir7562

Since her mother was so intensely (albeit healthily) loving, I could believe that Chloe would have some Stockholm Syndrome. & abuse being the catalyst for abusers, Chloe becoming a threat to her own family would make sense. Chloe is mentally shattered. Her need for control now goes overboard... They hinted that the mother went through parental abuse herself with the whips on her back. This development would also differentiate this story from the Gypsy Rose Blanchard case

Chloe resents her mom for hurting and deceiving her. This is not a horror film. It's a thriller and at the very end, we are witnessing nothing but revenge. As Chloe said, she's furious. No matter how complex the feelings of betrayal and disappointment, Chloe is focused on payback and liberation. Kiera Allen deserves an Oscar. Aneesh Chaganty is a brilliant director and also deserves an Oscar.

It’s a classic case of the abused becoming the abuser, if you watch the cut scenes, Diane was also abused by her mother hence the scars on her back and references to Domestic Violence in her emails. We learn in the film that Diane is very manipulative, the same way Diane’s mother probably was to her. The scene at the end is basically her daughters way or torturing Diane, by telling her how happy she’s is in her life and then drugging her the same way she did to her. It’s a circle of abuse! I have dealt with Domestic Violence cases over the years and in some circumstances it isn’t uncommon to see a victim become the abuser. Everything is controlled by Diane, Chloe has no means of contact with the outside world. Even the fake phone calls Diane has in the house so that Chloe overhears the conversations, it’s just another form of manipulation. Diane makes it so that Chloe is solely reliant on her and drugs her so that she can never leave her. This film carries a very powerful message.

This guys analysis was WEAK! In the scene with the other parents she wasn't looking forward to dating at all, she was merely being resentful about all the things she "sacrificed." But more importantly it was about her, all the other parents were concerned for their children. Her comment was the opposite and thus got a reaction! And, the end was definitely about payback. By announcing everything that is going on in her life she's saying, "I don't and never really needed you." Drugging her from that point was payback, why else would she use the same dog meds?

  • @doingtime20
    @doingtime202 жыл бұрын

I didn't like the ending, doesn't seem like Chloe's character would hold a huge grudge against her "mom". Chloe seems intelligent enough to understand it is mostly pointless, Diane is already in a pretty bad situation because of her mental problems and of course jail. Chloe may hate her at some degree sure, but go all the trouble to medicate her constantly? That's kinda dumb. I understand it works as the metaphor of children acting as the parents raised them, but it doesn't quite work any other way. Also Chloe was never presented as the vengeful or resentful type, no foreshadowing in any way. Anyway other than that it's a good movie.

Also victims can develop Stockholm Syndrome, and they may avoid medical treatment later in life. In the scene the mom is shot, it’s like she knew if she fell down those stairs vs just collapse, she would get that sympathy. **When Chloe gives her mom pills including that trigoxin at the end... that was such sweet karma. I think the point of that scene was to show that her mom knew that Chloe was catching onto the fact that something was wrong and had intentionally disabled the internet to stop her from finding out. In the next scene afterwards, her mom is on the phone with the internet providers asking why her service is down and says to Chloe that it's going to be down for at least the end of the month which seemed like she was just coming up with that as a lie and probably just thought Chloe would forget about it eventually, or forcefully with the use of the neurotoxin she made.

This is a really sad situation if you think about it. Obviously, it is more than upsetting any person would do this to the child, but it's just the underlying themes of how hurt people hurt people. Undoubtedly, what Diane did was wrong to Chloe on all levels, but it's just sad how she's only doing what she knows. The movie strongly suggested she went through something traumatic with what I think is a Satanic symbol on her back, so it makes sense that she would want to immobilize Chloe so she doesn't get to experience the world at all (which is why she says she's protecting her). It's really heartbreaking to think about. I'm not trying to invalidate anything that Chloe went through at all. It's just sad how people become so deranged after being surrounded by deranged people. This was a really sad movie to watch. I wonder how Diane would have been if she had a healthy upbringing. Maybe Chloe wouldn't have to suffer so much. That poor girl. I'm aware this story is fictional, but it's themes are unfortunately so real.

I had a lot of problems with this movie. Where's the dog? How is Diane getting a Rx for dog medicine if there's no dog? There wasn't even a hint of a dog--not a bone, not a dog bed, no dog carrier in the spotless a** car trunk. What the hell is Chloe building with all that stuff in her room? Why is Diane growing these ginormous tomatoes? Is Diane a teacher or a nurse? I thought I heard her say she had to 'substitute' for someone, which immediately brings to mind 'teacher', not nurse. I didn't realize she was a nurse until I saw the storage room full of drugs. I imagine there had been a lot of drug changes over the years as witnessed by that store room. Did she explain all of them the way she did with the green and grey capsule? And why, suddenly, is this the first time she has become suspicious of a pill? And why is Diane keeping all these 'momentos' of evidence? I hate plot devices that are so glaringly stupid. And my final problem with this is--who was daddy and why was Diane's actual baby so underweight? I guess I'm done. Next time get Michael Mann to direct the movie.
