    I think it's kind of interesting here how Rumple says here, "When we met, I told you I was a difficult man to love." But he actually doesn't say that to Belle onscreen in the final product of "Skin Deep" from season 1. He only says it to her in a deleted scene, and instead only says it to Emma in Storybrooke.

    I don't think he actually means no one can love him. Ultimately, I think what he means is that, eventually one way or another, everyone is going to leave him. And let's be real... it's kinda true. Both his parents abandoned him. His first wife abandoned him. He pushed his son away despite his best intentions. Cora left him because she loved her power more. I wouldn't say that what Zelena had for him was love as much as an unhealthy obsession that resulted in her locking him in a cage for half a season, lol.... With Regina, I don't even know, honestly. I used to have a pretty clear picture of their relationship, but all the making out stuff kind of threw me O.o And of course, Belle left him too. Not to say she didn't have her reasons. I mean, he's being doing some really messed up stuff lately. But anyway... yes, people can love him. But no one has the gall to stick it out with him in the end, and I think that's his point. He's an extremely flawed guy, and therefore can't hold down any real relationships without someone getting hurt.

    Honestly, Rumple made an excellent point in season 5 when she discovered he's the dark one again and they were in the underworld. I mean even after he became a hero and tried to do everything right by her, EXACTLY right by her, she still couldn't get together with him and I still really don't understand why not if she truly ONLY wanted the good man. He kind of pointed that out because it's true, she did fall in love with the man AND the beast. Obviously she prefers the man, but her alter ego Lacey preferred the beast with some of the good man tendencies, so what does that say about Belle? I think she does prefer the man but she does love some of the beast and she has to be willing to take both of them. Just my opinion though :P however Rumple's move here is a bit self pitying and doesn't do him credit, but in the end he did do the right thing by deciding to walk away.

    Exactly...again Rumple tries to do the right thing, but it comes back to bite later when he loses his son anyway. Didn't Belle see if Rumple wanted to speed up her pregnancy he could have done that here with no problems? How in the world did she fall for Evil Queen's trick and think that Rumple somehow changed his mind and decided to do it behind her back when he could have easily done that here! Rumple had clearly turned away from that course in this scene when he had every ampled opportunity, and yet, Belle still didn't trust him.

    At first, I hated this storyline because why would they make Rumple so threatening and domineering towards Belle if they're going to end up together in the end anyway? But the more I looked into it, the more it made sense that the reality Rumple wanted can never exist, because he can't just isolate his son from the world the way he tried to do with Baelfire, and just raise him alone, especially if he planned on keeping him away from Belle. Unfortunately, this is never brought up, but ultimately, Belle should've asked him, "What does it mean to love a child? If our child is anything like me, he'll want to see the world. Will you let him? Or will you keep him sheltered, alone, angry, confused, and frustrated, just so you can have someone who'll love you? Like what you're doing to me? And worst off, when he learns what you had to do to me to keep him safe, will he ever truly love you? There aren't enough Dark One spells in all the realms to do that."

    Also just fyi in case you're not clever enough to understand that all by yourself: having 2 parents who never gave a fck abozt you is indeed not normal, and tons of consequences like a completely low self esteem, no self love and the belief that no one can love you (which ofc inspires self sabotaging because we always want to be right) is actually very predictable in this situation. And opening up about his deepest wounds does not make him manipulative. It is actually in fact belle here who manipulates him (as always) by using her possible affection "you'll lose me forever" knowing exactly how thirsty he is for any kind of affection he can get. And she's been doing this since season 2. Love belle btw, but I don't like primitive hoomans who turn her into some abuse victim when she was extremely emotionally abusive and fcked up rumples (already extremely ill head) even more

    This relationship was so, so toxic. Belle’s happy ending should have been being content with just herself, and Rumple’s should have been true redemption, giving up his power and not acting out of fear anymore-but not together. This isn’t True Love, it never was. And it’s honestly really disgusting that the writers presented it as such. It send a really bad message that Rumbelle is a Snow White/Prince Charming level love to admire. It’s not, it’s just toxic.

    But also I feel like the manipulation and all the bad stuff is there on purpose. This show is suppose to be a fairy tale in the real world so they add real world concepts with a bunch of magic. Not everything is going to have a happy ending or journey in the real world but it is a fairy tale still so they include those magical moments too.

  • @cmm5542

    @cmm5542

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think the biggest mistake the writers ever made in OUAT was turning Rumbelle into a textbook example of a toxic relationship in this season. Toxic relationships, to my mind, aren't good entertainment or art; but more importantly, making Rumbelle toxic is totally opposite to the characterization originally developed for this relationship. Belle was never under any pressure to love Rumple or be in a relationship with him. He took her captive as a servant to pay for his help in the Ogre Wars - hardly seductive, but really not that evil or unjust. Somebody had to pay and Belle voluntarily offered. Rumple never mistreated or disrespected her in her servant status, where many men would have taken advantage of Belle. Now, was there any REASON for Belle to fall in love with Rumple? No, except that Belle is a free agent and CHOSE to love Rumple, she didn't NEED his love. By that I mean that Belle's original character was completely self-sufficient. She didn't need a man to be happy - when Rumple rejected her originally, Belle went off and had some grand adventures on her own without any attempt to find another man who would 'treat her right.' Unlike Emma and Regina, with their past abandonment issues, Belle didn't measure her self-worth by having a man appreciate and respect her. She respected herself already. Vulnerable women can be destroyed by male partners; self-sufficient women cannot. If you have enough self-esteem (which, admittedly, very few people do), abusive or unloving behaviour may hurt in the moment, but it cannot have a lasting impact on your well-being. I know this from personal experience. While I would not pretend to such a level of moral strength that nothing anyone says can dent my self-esteem personally, I don't let it happen at work. I worked as a substitute teacher for many years, in some very bad schools with struggling students who really needed help. Many of them were not 'good' kids; their behaviour was bad and often disrespectful, but I didn't care, I loved them anyway. I was in this job to take care of their well-being, not for them to bolster mine. Once a student swore at me, and, according to school rules, I reported it. I was flabbergasted by how concerned the other staff all were about ME! They were asking if I was ok, if I needed to recover, etc. I knew they were trying to be kind, so I surpressed the urge to laugh in disbelief, but I could not believe they thought I would be weak and selfish enough to be personally bothered by a teenager's disrespect. All I was worried about was how to help him with whatever influences were resulting in his inappropriate behaviour. Anyone who is more worried about themselves than the student should not be a teacher, in my mind. And the same goes for other kinds of relationships. Now, since we live in a modern society where we can choose our partners, I don't see there being many circumstances where it would be anything less than foolish to link your lot romantically with someone who isn't as good for you as you are for them. But I still think one can learn a lot from such unselfishly asymmetrical romances in stories for application to other relationships (such as teacher/student, parent/child, difficult siblings, 'tough love' friend to 'difficult to love' individual who would otherwise have no friends and self-destruct). But, Belle is in an unusual circumstance, and she is also representative of a time when you didn't necessarily choose your partner. So what are you supposed to do? Sulk and grieve over your bad luck and let it destroy you, or focus on making the best of the situation and helping others? There are few healthier and more naturally healing attitudes than the latter. Belle could have hated and fought Rumple from the get-go, or at least behaved with the cold precision of an injured servant who will not involve their awful boss in their personal life. But that wouldn't have made her any better off. Instead, she chose to see the best in Rumple and helped him become a better man; he even died to save the town! True, there were several periods of serious backsliding, but they all came from Rumple's natural cowardice and desperation for power, NOT any deliberate attempt to abuse or manipulate his wife. Rumple clearly loved Belle and was far less selfish with her than with anyone else. But that wasn't going to make him completely good and equally unselfish to Belle overnight after centuries of being the Dark One addicted to power! Only an idiot could think 'twu love' would be enough to make that transformation without personal growth and moral srength and patience, and Belle is supposed to be super-intelligent. The way she suddenly turned in to a weak, naive, dependent victim who needed time away from Rumple because he was 'hurting her heart'; from having been a strong and independent individual whose heart was so full of unselfish love she didn't even need love from others in order to be able to love and help them (in much the same way Henry and Robin Hood did for Regina - Robin didn't need Regina's love to make him a better or stronger man; he just chose to love her the way she needed unselfishly because he had love to give freely, just as Belle originally did for Rumple. Nothing toxic about that.) simply doesn't fit the characters or the story arc. And I loathe what they did with trying to make Rumple an 'unfit parent' for Gideon. After all he did to find Baelfire again, devoting his life to making up for one mistake to his son, everybody in Storybrook, and certainly Belle, should have known Rumple would never hurt his own child! (Ahem, he became the Dark One for the express purpose of saving children . . .) He might hurt others to save his family, but Rumpķe would never, ever, deliberately hurt those he loved and it was downright cruel and damaging for Belle to say so! (Especially since Rumple does have poor self-esteem and IS dependent on Belle's love to become a better man; she should have known better than to abuse the power she had over him.) By trying to keep Rumple away as a 'threat', which was ridiculous, it was actually Belle herself who put her son in danger and got him kidnapped by the Black Fairy! This would have been a perfect OUAT moment to showcase Belle's 'flaws,' even as a hero, but unfortunately no one blamed her for her selfish parenting decisions and she never REALLY apologized to Rumple for her unfounded mistrust of him as a PARENT just because of his flaws as a HUSBAND. I love OUAT, and I can't blame the writers for messing up one intertangled subplot, even if Rumbelle are my favourite couple (I adore redemptive love stories, and Beauty and the Beast is my first true love). I think they were just trying too hard to find a modern parallel to arranged marriage/servitude and ended up forcing a parallel to a mutually abusive toxic relationship which really isn't a proper parallel at all. It would have been better for Belle to be the honest employee at Gold's shop who refuses to let him tempt her off the straight and narrow, while being strong enough to guide him back on to it. Much more parallel to the original. Oh well - at least they got it back on track for Season 7, even if it was totally unbelievable that needing to save their son Gideon would have just magically fixed all the Rumbelle relationship problems. But this is a magic world, at that.

    @@altinaykor364 I couldn't agree with you more. I've read a lot of your comments on these clips, and it's great to meet someone who likes Rumple as much as I do! I find it very frustrating when I see him defined as an 'abuser.' Abusers use people as objects for their own gain, not make mistakes out of cowardice. Rumple never once objectified or disrespected Belle as a person he loved; he is just so desperate to fix things with her and protect what they have together that he ends up making matters worse more often than not! This is such a normal and human error to make in any relationship, and we should all be applying Rumple's lessons to our own selfish selves (cause all human beings are very selfish and hurt their loved ones that way sometimes) rather than calling him an 'abuser' we can't identify with or learn from. I find Rumple's redemption arc the most inspiring and believable in the show (although Regina is great, too. I want to be a 'Good Queen' and a bit more refined just like her!)

    I don't see how wanting equal parenting rights with your spouse is either abusive or unhealthy. Even divorced couples have to share custody unless one agrees voluntarily to give it up or you can legally prove the other parent unfit. Rumple being the Dark One doesn't make him automatically unfit as a parent - even the mafia and other organized crime lords don't have to give up their kids; they're usually good to THEM! Belle had no right to try to take Gideon away from Rumple. I've heard some compare Rumple to Zelena here, but that's a totally opposite situation. Zelena FORCED Robin to get her pregnant through trickery; Belle agreed to marry and conceive with Rumple of her own free well, knowing quite well what kind of man he was. If she wanted a healthy, normal environment for her child, she shouldn't have married Rumple; he would never have forced her. But since she did, even if she wants out of the relationship, she can't deny him equal rights in raising their child. That's unjust, selfish, and frankly illegal.
