Ruger No. 1 chambered for .45-120: How Hard Does It Hit Compared to a .30-30?

Спорт

Some people (like me) love Ruger No. 1 rifles. Some people (also like me) love the old .45-120 cartridge, slinging 535 grain cast bullets. So what could be better, combining the two into one gun?
This is a fun-to-watch video, shooting at a steel gong to demonstrate the hitting power of the .45-120 as compared to a Model 94 .30-30 (both using cast bullets). Load and ballistics data also included.

Later, when target shooting, I discovered that, by leaning way back into the chair and having my left leg crossed over my right thigh, I could get as steady an aim as from a properly set up shooting table. It works really well.

My dream gun would be a Shiloh Sharps Express chambered for the 45/120 but I could never afford it but after watching you shoot your 45/120 I think that is more recoil than I want to deal with. I do own a Marlin 45/70 which is plenty big for anything around here. I like the history of the caliber as much as anything. I can sure agree with your preferences in rifles. The .45-120 does give a healthy kick alright, but you can load it down a bit too. I use some filler because the smokeless powder doesn't fill the case. Lovin' it living in this country. We recently obtained a trapline, which gives us the right to build a log cabin on it. That will be this year's project.

    @@ryankiesow6559 well, it always depends on the type of powder chosen but, in theory, that may be quite possible because the Ruger No. 1 action is capable of handling very extreme pressures. Should be possible to load it to equal (or exceed) the energy of a .458 Winchester Magnum. That said, don't take what I say as advice; I'm just speculating. Proper, safe load development techniques must be observed when doing such things and done by an experienced reloader.

    I think the crescent buttplate is a bit of a sadistic joke from Winchester, there are various theories about why it is shaped like that, but it is not a pleasant option for larger calibre rifles, I have an 1886 in 50/110 but that has the more sensible shotgun size buttplate, felt recoil is all about stock design, you can shoot a 577NE with a properly designed stock and not feel uncomfortable, but even a light calibre with a Winchester style stock can be uncomfortable to shoot, take care !

    Thanks Samuel. I watch for that in others' videos too. It's seems to me that every time I've seen an unanticipated non-fire recorded, there's a visible flinch, so it's quite common - even among experts. The majority of my shooting practice over the years has been with a .44 Magnum handgun, which I always left one or two cylinders empty on, to keep on checking myself. I think that has been very beneficial. It's far better to catch any flinching in its infancy, rather than let it become habit forming.

    Yeah, smoking's prohibited for that rifle. Too much work put into the engraving, custom stock and gold inlay to mess it up with black (and, hence, no need for paper patch either). But I do take it hunting, so I load it with smokeless to get greater muzzle energies. I use my own 540 grain cast bullets (2% tin) with gas checks for muzzle velocities of 1,600 fps (never any leading). It brings down game (including moose) quite nicely.

I have yet to fire it and finding brass is brutal. The original owner included some brass and dies thank goodness otherwise I'd be S.O.L. I wanted to start with black powder and will probably stick with that since I have 45-70s and a No. 1 in 9.3x74r if I really want to punish my shoulder. I reloaded 2 rounds with 105-110grns of 2F as that was all I could cram in. I was wondering if you've tried 3F and if so how much is too much? Thanks in advance. I'm in Ontario BTW. Cheers!

    That is a very accurate rifle, for some reason people appear to be frightened of the 45/120, I think they read the theory rubbish written by "gun writers" about getting a broken shoulder, or worst, as demonstrated here there is very little of the broken shoulder recoil they read about, is there a reason you chambered your Ruger No1 in 45/120 rather than 450 Nitro Express ? My 45/120 is in a Sharps but I do have Farquharsons in 577NE and 475 No2 NE, and in an 8Lbs rifle, they do give a bit of a jolt, keep enjoying your rifle, it looks a good shooter! Chris B.

  • @TheWaytoNativeChronicles

    @TheWaytoNativeChronicles

    To tell the truth, the reason it's chambered for .45-120 is because the previous owner had it custom-chambered for it. But, once I saw it, I knew it was going to be perfect for me (and not likely to draw high price from others, since it's so specialized in terms of reloading requirements). So I waited until the price came down (about a year) and then snapped it up. It's a great rifle alright and very accurate. Just a joy to shoot (and hunt with). Not that bad for recoil (about what a 7mm Mag will produce), even my wife shoots it occasionally.

    Ha a Ruger #1 Re-barreled and chambered for the .45 3 1/4 back in the late 70's when RCBS firs came out with the 3 1/4 case. I used 75 gr. of 4831 and latter a full case of 5010 powder with a Hoch 550 gr Paper patched bullet. Both slow burning and left unburn powder but they shot around 1 " at 100 yds. An IDIOT thought it would be funny to pull the 405 gr and replace it with a 550 gr bullet. He did this with out my knowledge and gave the rifle to me to shoot. Like to knock my arm off... In truth, I think the advantage over a 45-70 ends at about the 45-90 mark Lee. My rifle was chambered for .45-120 when I bought it (used), so that's what I run with. But, the way I load it (smokeless), it wouldn't make any difference if it was a .45-90, since my cases are only half full. That said, I can hurl a big, heavy bullet and pretty high velocities compared to .45-70 and do so with 1/2 or 1/3 the chamber pressure. I hunt moose with my gun and like to use my own cast bullets, so I want a fairly flat trajectory (within cast bullet limits), substituting bullet mass for velocity and caliber size for expansion to get high energy on target.

    That's something people don't consider. Big, heavy bullets going between 1200 and 1600 fps have insane straight line penetration. Very litte hydrostatic shock compared to higher velocities. Pokes a big hole through both lungs and any bones that get in the way. That is one bad ass rifle.

    @@forrest5050 ah, I see now why you're coming to that conclusion. Yes, in the case of the .45 cal it is a plain-based bullet. The .30 cal does have a recess for gas check, but the .45 does not. The reason for the .45 cal not having a recess for a gas check is because it's primarily designed for use by black powder shooters. For them the velocities only get up to about 1,400 fps, so a plain-based bullet will work. I, however, load my cartridges with smokeless and get that 535 grain bullet chugging along at 1,600 fps. At that speed you're correct in saying a gas check is needed. Solution? I put a gas check on the bullet anyway. It seems not everyone is aware that it can be done. I make my own using thin pop or beer can metal (it's important that the gas check be thin, so that it swages onto the bullet base when going through the lubrisizer). If you'd like to see for yourself how it's done, I have a whole video devoted to it. Works really well. No podia ser de otra manera RUGER SIEMPRE A LA VANGUARDIA DE TODO.MUY BIEN POR ELLOS 👍 . Y viendo este video me parece que me quedo corto con el cartucho y su retroceso. Antes era de polvora negra y ahora con los nuevos tiposde polvora el asunto cambia mucho. De todas maneras no deja de ser un CARTUCHON INFERNAL.

    From one perspective you could say that. With my load the energy at the muzzle is about what a 7mm Mag would produce. From the perspective of using cast bullets however, it's right up there in terms of performance. Cast bullets don't do well at velocities jacketed bullets can handle because inaccuracy and leading results. So, to compensate, a cast bullet shooter will (especially for hunting) tend to go with heavy bullets to compensate for speed. The large diameter bullet also makes up a bit for less expansion.

    It wasn't an accuracy test Greg. Just a comparison of how hard each cartridge hits steel (as the title of the video says). For something to do more with accuracy (shooting the same gong used in this video), you can check this out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z3aZs7ifpLbefLw.html
