Pads were introduced to football a long time ago to prevent people from getting killed... because that was an issue a long long time ago. But what happened over time is that pads and helmets became offensive weapons. Guys with helmets and shoulder pads can launch themselves at their opponent and completely crush them with hits that they otherwise would never have been able to do without a helmet or shoulder pads because they'd hurt themselves. It's causing a real problem in football with head injuries. Not just acute head injuries like getting knocked out... but long term brain damage from repeated blows to the head.

It's the same with what happened with boxing gloves. The gloves protected them from fractures and lacerations, but the forces they could now generate with the gloves protecting their metacarpals from shattering are enough to rattle the brain around.

NoemoRetro I’m sorry but you’re just wrong lol. I’ve watched a fair share of rugby and sorry but I don’t see 200+ pound dudes running full speed slamming into each other with all their force. Rugby is more like trying to wrestle someone to the ground not full speed tackle them.

I've watched multiple non-Americans react to this video and it's hilarious how every single time without fail, you guys ask "where was the hit" during one or more clips in the video. It's funny because it just shows how different sports have affected the way different cultures watch. The one hit you missed and the ones other non Americans also failed to see were off the ball hits. You actually caught a few other blocks, which is better than some other people who reacted to this. There are people who criticize American football for being a bunch of big dumb guys running into each other, but it's pretty obvious from a few reactions to this video (not yours, you're fine) that they are completely missing a larger part of the game. A serious football fan does not just follow the ball. If a pass is thrown, you'll do a quick scan of the defensive positioning. Or the second a running back takes the hand-off we'll look at the blocking scheme for holes or blow ups. Watch long enough and you'll be able to spot big plays before they even happen. Again. I'm not criticizing at all. I'm sure I'd miss some obvious things in Rugby. Just an amusing observation.

NFL has adopted a shit ton of rules surrounding all physical contact within the past 10 years due to health concerns such as concussions and CTE .

Jacob McDonald I agree as well . But it also leads to a lot of unnatural plays . Many defenders have begun to just hit people low at the knees . And a lot of the offensive players say they would rather be hit in the head than the knees . Also try watching some college football . Specifically colleges such as Georgia Tech, Army, Navy, or Air Force . They run an offense known as the triple option . I think it would remind you of rugby a lot 🤙🏽

All of the highlights in this video that were NFL are @ least 4 years old. Because of all the player safety rules that have been implemented. Some of the highlights are college, high school, and of course, youth football(that was brilliant). Almost all of these hits are no longer seen in the NFL and when they do happen, a penalty is assessed in the game and the offending player is usually fined by the league. In college, the play is reviewed to confirm that it is actually against the rules, and if so, the player is ejected, and possibly suspended for all or part of the next game.

It's been even more than 10 years I'd say. The NFL used to be pretty much anything goes. Many, if not most, of these "ever" videos don't do history justice since footage is harder to come by from back when. I believe one black and white clip of the clothesline tackle was Deacon Jones of the Rams. A guy who'd slap the opposing lineman upside the head so hard, it'd daze them and he'd get a jump on the quarterback. He was responsible for the NFL banning deliberate head shots like this. He also coined the term "sack." In those days, you didn't worry about what may happen, you worried about the inevitable when facing certain people. They were just bad dudes and you were gonna get hurt...it was a given. You weren't protected by rules. It was a different game. People like Butkus, Lambert and a handful of others across the league just had that aura about them. I was a Dolphins (Marino) fan growing up, but my pop was a Steelers fan and loved to tell stories about them. One I remember was during the Super Bowl when the Steelers missed a field goal and a guy from the Cowboys patted the kicker on the head as if to say "thanks for not scoring". I’m all for the rules to protect the head of football players. I was a football player and I hated seeing people trying to injure by leading with the head. Always protect the head

One of the most devastating hits of all time was delivered by Chuck Bednarick on Frank Gifford. Frank caught the ball on a pass play and started to run until Chuck slammed into him so hard Frank was swept off his feet and Chuck lands hard on top of him. Frank was knocked completely unconscious right there on the field and sustained a concussion that was so bad that not only did he miss the rest of the game, not only did he miss the rest of the season, he missed the rest of the NEXT season. This was way back in the days when tv was black and white. And we didn’t know the kind of damage concussions can really do. Edit: Both players are in the pro football hall of fame.

I feel like sometimes we forget there's people under those pads. That's why when someone gets hit so hard the helmet comes off I always cringe, cuz you can actually see there face as they get hit with the force of a decent car crash

Some of those you are watching are blocks. As long as you dont hit from behind on a block for your runner or receiver. Everything is good

Many of those were college and high school. It’s always the same hits video. Someone should really update it.

There are very few rules regarding tackling. You can't grab the facemark. You can't grab by the neck and drag ballcarrier down. You can't lead with or target the head. You can't clothesline tackle anymore. Other than these few rules you are free to put the ballcarrier on the ground any way you can. In football you can be hit chasing the ballcarrier if you are in a position to make the tackle, so defenders must be aware at all times. All the blocker has to do is get his head ion front of your body for it to be a legal block.

They've enforced more rules like no blindsiding a ball carrier and if you hit a receiver while he is in the motion of catching then you can't hit him above the chest or below the knees. More rules to reduce concussions and eventual deaths. This is why football is so much more dangerous than rugby because rugby is a bit more refined. In rugby you can't hit anyone that isn't carrying the ball, so it is very difficult to get blindsided. In football you can get blocked/blindsided much more easily.

I believe the guy at 3:05 was genuinely surprised when he got knocked down xD He got up looking who knocked him down, but nobody was near him xD

Jon Brooks they used to put metal bars taped around their hand and use it like a club to hit guys in the chest or the head they used to close line people I mean it was pretty barbaric back then sure the athletes weren't near as athletic as they are today or as physically gifted but those guys back then made up for it a lot of times with brutality because of their not being any rules and regulations as to what you can do

I'll be honest.....both were before my time. What clips I have seen though, I think they had different qualities. I think Tatum was a bit more physical, whereas Lott was more brains and finesse. But he could still hit, no doubt. Both were awesome though, no question there.

As much as I miss these types of hits in the NFL we now know most of these hits were causing super bad brain injuries and most of these hits are KOs. To put things in perspective when some of these guys kill themselves they put the bullet in their chests so science could study their brain.(this literally has happened) A huge issue is they use pads and helmets giving them the feeling of being unstoppable but just making them hit even harder.

Jacob McDonald Yeah some of them even get paralyzed for a bit but if you can see how they are like hitting they hit right in the abdomen that's a good place to hit. Body slams are the best I do it all the time in football (mainly because I'm a 7th grade 6'2 tall human) you can't jump over me!

Both sides of the ball can block(hit non runners) but there are a few rules, on the line of scrimmage, anything goes except for holding or intentionally tripping. Off the line of scrimmage you are not allowed to:block in the back, High low(two persons block high and low, not technically a penalty, but most leagues want to discorage it) Clipping(cheapshot block at the knees) tripping. Like tackling targeting applies to blocking so hitting the head with your hands or shoulder pads. leading with the head. placing hands to the face. Grabbing the facemask.

When I was in high school, I played rugby and my best friend played football, to change it up during his senior year he decided he would join me and try out for rugby, what happened was; because he had been playing football for so long, even before high school, he was so accustomed to having pads and a helmet, that he was tackling people as hard in rugby as he would in football, by the end of tryouts he had several cracked ribs and a broken clavicle.

These are definitely called a "Hospital Pass" in Rugby 😂

A friend of mine in high school played both rugby and football and said that if they hit each other in rugby without pads the same way they hit in football with them somebody would probably be killed I'm every game. He said he had more small injuries and was bruised more after a rugby match but that the really bad pain came the day after big football hits.

Football tackling technique is very different from rugby, I had a friend who played rugby, and I played football. In football you're allowed to tackle higher, whereas in rugby I believe that's a flag/penalty right.

Yes you're right. Anything above the shoulder is considered too high. Also, nowadays, if you don't actively wrap your arms around the attacker when tackling, and instead lead with your shoulder only, that is a shoulder charge and a harsh penalty, sometimes a yellow or red card depending on how deliberate.

Jacob McDonald Proper Am. Football technique is actually to lead with the shoulder into the base of the chest, wrap your arms around them and lift while still running forward. Lots of players ignore that because they want to make a hit like the ones you see in the video, but it also leads to broken tackles more often.

you can look up tackling by the Seattle Seahawks and their coach Pete Carroll. He is teaching rugby style tackling to cut down on head injuries and the team is known for wrapping up the tackle not just the hard hit.

I'm new to your channel but let me tell u the straight up truth about the NFL (BTW I love football) In the beginning of the NFL and AFL all the way to around the 1980s the NFL failed to tell any of their players the risks they we're taking playing the sport which was serious concussions and the after effects it would have on them. Many ex NFL players went crazy after their career in the NFL and some even committed suicide (watch the movie concussion for further detail). As the NFL progressed through the 1990s and early 2000s many sued the NFL for the dangers and risks that weren't made clear for players this made the NFL to make many rules about heavy hitting as you see in this video. The rules that have always been there are simple like no facemask tackles no hitting to the head however when it comes to tackling a QB in the pocket you aren't allowed to tackle him above the neck or below the waist you also can not tackle him after about 3 - 5 seconds after he's thrown the ball and no horse collar tackles . Now the NFL goes with a very simple rule now which is if the hit looks like it hurts it's a flag(penalty) for Unnecessary roughness. I’m not sure about the nfl, although i’m almost positive it’s the same, but in college football/ncaa football, you can horse-collar a QB as long as they are in the pocket, if they scrambled out even if they are still gonna through it, then you cannot horse collar

I think the players knew full well about concussions. The NFL didn't have to tell them something they have experienced and lived. Most players admit they know the risk and it's their choice to play. That being said, I'm all for concussion safety.

They knew there WAS risk, but not exactly what it was. Men had ideas about being a bit punchy or having more headaches or maybe even having some minor memory problems and stuff like that, not massive irreversible brain damage. I think for most players, the biggest risks they understood are the long term degenerative effects on the knees, hips, ankles, and back.

My boyfriend played football and wrestling in high school. He told me that one time he got hit so hard that he said it’s like getting into a car accident. Unfortunately, A lot of These nfl players develop brain damage the longer they play because of the amount of hits they get over the years. Some of these guys have been playing since they were little kids. The helmets and pads can only protect you so much. That’s why these guys work out so much and have big muscles. It actually helps them when they get hit. Also, I was an assistant football manager in high school for a year. I helped the team with equipment and such. Being a girl, I never understood how much these guys go through until I watched the games on the sideline. After the games, these guys would take off their pads and helmet and let me tell you, a lot of them have purple and black bruises on their body and they are so used to I guess the pain that they don’t think about it. They just keep playing. That’s why they have a short season, once a week game. The players need that much time to practice and also to recuperate.

Most3LIT3 I can't even tell you how stupid you sound. Here I'll explain: Barry Sanders is a RUNNING BACK he is NOT skilled in defensive positions or Quarterbacking. The Detroit Lions of 90-02 Lacked all of these things. Barry came along and made the team better ONLY where he could. The team was STILL mediocre and lousy even with the 3rd greatest back of all time. If you are going off ring status then Dan Marino was not good. Junior Seau was not good, Johnny Unitas was no good, and JJ Watt is No Good. Think about that before you judge by SB wins.

Agreed 100%! I can't stand sports commentators that only compare players by rings. It's so lazy and has little do with how great of a football player you are. It's a team sport. A star player is 1 of 22 starters. You have to have great players at most positions and a coaching staff that knows what they're doing in order to win a championship. A great player can certainly help immensely, but Sanders playing on those mostly terrible Detroit teams had little chance of winning a super bowl.

I think the best reactions come from those outside their element because it comes across so much more sincere. I don't watch a great deal of rugby, but i appreciate the similarities between the two sports. It comes across great hearing your reactions...great job. Some of my buddies from football decided to play rugby in the off season and in one of their first matches a couple of them went to tackle the ball carrier around the mid section like they had been used to in football which they had played for several years at this point. When they both wrapped up their momentum took them around and their heads collided, crown of the head into the others cheek bone. The one guys cheek bone collapsed into his sinus which made a loud pop like a paper bag and his eye was dislodged from its socket and he tried to keep playing. Obviously they stopped the game and drove him to a hospital where he had his orbital bone reconstructed with some metal plates and screws. Healed up well and you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at him but there's a bit of numbness on that cheek. In a lot of these clips you see the player being hit flop in that way because of how fast the game is. When two 200lbs plus bodies collide helmet to helmet at speeds up to 20-22 miles per your brain just shuts off from it impacting the inside of your skull.

In high school and college you sometimes practice without pads and have full contact. It hurt but it very fun.

Brian Moorman was the punter who was virtually annihilated by Sean Taylor. He went to my school. The school is tiny but the one thing we have always been taught is to get back up after a heavy hit. And he does just that.

The thing is now most of these non-carrier hits are now illegal as they are peel-back blocks (when an offensive player works his way back to the line of scrimmage for a block). You’re not allowed to initiate contact anymore on these. A rule I like cos as a defensive player these are absolutely devastating as you don’t see the hit coming.

Figured he'd like this one more than the others due to the pads and helmets allowing AF players being able to hit each other a lot harder. Very enjoyable for a rugby player to see. The added protection lets players sacrifice their bodies into hits where rugby requires more care and measure, so I would imagine it's adrenaline pumping and exciting to see the huge hits. Hell, it even is for us that watch it all the time, we're just more used to it.

Blocking defenders by the offense is a huge part of football. The biggest rule when it comes to blocking is you can't grab and hold them.

I remember hitting a guy in Middle School Football so hard they had to carry him off the field but the coach put him back in in like 2 plays, I was just thinking, "What the hell?! I don't want to hurt him any more than I have what am I supposed to do?". Then next play he sidestepped and I fell but I grabbed onto his sock and held him there until one of our guys came and nailed him, I am so sorry for that guy.

With how you were talking about how some people think football is softer due to the pads, I don't think a lot of Rugby fans who don't know much about football realize how different tackling is in both rugby and football which is understandable since American Football isn't that big outside North America. I've played both (I love both Rugby and football!) and in rugby, due to the players being relatively close, you don't usually get the same running start that you do in football and also you more run into the player than use your legs to launch yourself into them. Like in football if you have a good open tackle you more or less use your legs like a spring to launch yourself into the player with the ball since you want to get as much force into the tackle to make sure they go down. So for example, off the starting drop kick when I was playing rugby the ball was in the air long enough that our team got down most of the field and basically my mindset was my typical football mindset, "anyone who has the ball is going to be on the ground" so the player who received the kick saw me coming and passed it to his teammate and because his teammate was preoccupied with trying to catch the pass i was basically in his blind spot so I did what I was taught in football (this was my first season playing rugby), I got low, and aimed my shoulder right for his waist/gut area and used my legs like a spring and launched myself into him and split him right down the middle. basically I tackled him so hard he was practically knocked out and had to be carried off the field. even the ref told me that what I did was perfectly legal but to try not to hit so hard next time 😂😂. So my point is that in football the pads are more necessary rather than just to be "safer". Also, love your videos 👍

Respect for reacting and not bashing our sport, Rugby is fun to play as well.. I once heard the reason there wouldn't be any football in the olympics is because of how ruthless the hitting is, and for the fact other countries don't understand the concept. The only rule for a block is that you cannot block from the back. You must block the front side of the player. Now, they are also having the players stay away fro the head and neck area. So, basically, you can knock the snot out of anyone as long as you hit them in the chest/upper torso area.
