The best thing to do when hydrolocked is NOT try to start it (obviously). Remove the spark plugs or glow plugs and turn the engine over on the starter. Make sure you remove water from any part of the intake including the air filter housing. We all know you can't compress water so by trying to start it every single time you are putting immense force on the internals and it is how you bend connecting rods. You also need to be lucky in the first place and hope that you don't already have a bent connecting rod.

He was getting away with it till he floored the revs and spun up the turbo. At which point it appeared to grab eve more water into the inlet and ruin itself. I wonder if the bottom rungs on the intercooler were filled with water still and when idling it was just breathing through the clear top section of intercooler. When he revved it and created some boost it sucked in all the water. Just a thought. It was a bad strat.....

My dad and I drove up a mountain road in our Mitsubishi Eclipse, and we didn't get stuck in flood waters. Some were below the tires, but eventually, we came to a slow-moving surge up to our windows. But if you go slow and smooth, you will cross that body of water, even in a two-door coup.

that would be a bad idea in BMW's case: he would have stayed in the pit if he was slow; sure, he hydrolocked the engine, but he would have done it even if he was slow, he would just get a shorter distance. Here, however, the first part was good (getting a good momentum), but the seocnd wasn't: if he was prudent, he'd just unplug the spark plugs and cleared the problem and went his way. If he was slow, he would have been stranded in the bottom of the sump in the SUV's cases - sure, that was stupid to run so fast

For overseas watchers, I point out that the second two numbers on the car's plate tell the year of registration (more or less). The Beemer with DX14 etc is eight years old. However, a 70 plate means 2020, just to confuse! Round by Rufford people seem to keep their vehicles in good condition and well-maintained. The downside is that if a vehicle is worth perhaps £4,000 second hand, playing at river patrol through a ford is likely going to cost that amount for a replacement engine. That makes it a write-off. 10 seconds of fun creating a bow wave, and years of regret afterwards...

Can't for the life of me understand how the police let this happen- cars driving at speed in an area where children are always about. The worry is that one of the drivers snaps when his car hydrolocks and attacks the sightseers (who seem to have started to cheer the misfortunes loudly).

First mistake, you don't accelerate fast in the water cause the water would get to the engine easily. You have to go very slowly and pres a little bit the gas pedal. I have done that with my Toyota Avensis Sedan 1.6L Manual 5 Speed 2008 in the river with almost the same amount of water without any problem. You have to go slowly, that's all.

Use first gear, and slip the clutch to maintain a low road speed with high engine revs: that way you can keep the bow wave as small as possible and there is less chance of water getting into the exhaust. If the water is too deep, the engine and electrics will conk out anyway; but if it isn't, driving through it like a bull in a china shop is about the most likely way to fail, and you can tear chunks off the vehicle in the process. Shame that didn't occur to a lot of these bright sparks.

  • @gurnihal12

You’re totally right, but the high engine revs is wrong . Engine should be as close to idle as possible. Decreases the chances of water intake .
