Presumably Rufford near Ollerton - ford is or was usually just a couple of inches deep. I had been through it many times while visiting the park. That was in the days before the Black Walk was redeveloped, because my mother liked to visit the place of her birth. One very dark and rainy night in 1971 while cruising around with a girlfriend in my ancient Minivan, we went through the ford discovering too late it was in flood. I had expected it to be a bit deeper and had taken the precaution of proceeding slowly and keeping the engine revs high but floating like a boat and drifting sideways was a complete surprise. Fortunately, just a second before it would have been too late the front wheels gripped and we shot forward like a cork from a pop-gun. The engine developed a worsening misfire and we staggered into the car park just as the engine died. Finding something to do while the ignition system dried itself out wasn't a problem...

The mountings of the engine and transmission unit of a front wheel drive car are pretty robust. To tow the car out (provided that it is in neutral) without a 'snatch' and at low speed should not be a problem, provided that the attachment point on the engine is solid. Having said this, I've just looked under the bonnet of my mk.6 Golf and I can't see anything solid enough either in front or behind the plastic cover over the engine.

I did the same with my very first car, an old Escort. Came across someone stalled in a ford like that, and offered to push. Put some cardboard between the 2 cars and gave him a gentle shove out of the water. So long ago I can't remember what happened after but I know he was surprisingly happy and cheerful, considering his car wouldn't start. Looking back I'm surprised he trusted a couple of 19 yr old lads with a shitty Escort to shove him gently, but he did, and it went well. Let me math... 37 years ago. Wow.

When people try helping don't let them turn their engine over with the spark plugs still on the engine cause it will just damage it more. You want to get as much water out without the engine being on and just turn it over with the plugs off and the engine should spit most of the water out wait a couple hours then put plugs back in and turn it over and hope for the best.
