Rudy had a whole internal dialogue about how he isn’t okay with slavery, but it’s the norm in the world, it’s literally everywhere, so it would be impossible for him to abolish. Even if he tried it would be him against every country in the world, and he just wants to live a normal peaceful life, that’s all he’s wanted since we first met him so it makes sense that he doesn’t want to go to war over this. Sylphie was also uncomfortable proposing the idea to him, but all of that dialogue was skipped sadly for paving’s sake

Yea without that inner dialogue, it can throw people off. Fitz only mentioned it because of what Zanoba is ,a prince, and that’s what they do in same situation.

@@zeromeaning It’s in both probably I’ve mainly dealt with LN. I believe it’s more in lead up too it , but he talked about slavery a few times. His mindset is has always been I’m not here to in force his beliefs in this new world. He will do what he can in certain situations, but he is not Ruijurd. No matter how good his magic is he is a glass cannon someone like Ruijurd could easily end him. There are other ways to change the world other then force.

You got a good point. The beast children that Rudy rescued were illegally kidnapped. But the children in this episode legally became slave because they were in debt. Rudy can't save these slaves illegally, because they are legal merchant.

7:05 Slavery isn’t completely abolished in our world. Around 50 million are affected in the whole world in 2023. It’s prevalent in North Korea, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Russia, Afghanistan, etc. You can look at the statistics in International Labor Organization website and the Hope for Justice website. Mushoku Tensei is showing the world different from our own where these things are prominent, even becoming part of the economy. That’s also why Elise, the escort from Rosenburg, was so grateful for Rudy to heal her sister for free is because of how much those healing spells can cost. Her sister could have ended up becoming a slave as a result of that treatment if it was from someone else.

Zanoba bought her, not Rudeus. He just helped, and started to teach her.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't it been like 8 or 9 years since Rudeus, has seen Sylphy? He left home before his 10th birthday, and is like 16 or 17 now. It's understandable that Rudeus, wouldn't recognize her, especially if he isn't expecting to see her in Fitz. I've certainly run into elementary school friends as an adult that I didn't recognize:)

Zanoba literally can't have a physical relationship with a normal woman without hurting her. His strength is like a curse that will destroy others if he can't control it. Normal women are too soft for him to even feel any sensation and he could get too rough. And this is why his first love and only wife is dead and that is why he humps the statues instead... Destroy the rock or metal statues and its fine, just build another... Some warriors swing their swords... but this guy doesn't need a sword to swing in battle...

Rudy did not buy a slave....Zanoba did. He simply followed the conventions of the world and suggested it to his pupil to solve is issue. Rudy is no revolutionary or superhero typically when he helps there's either a good reason or benefits for himself. Like most people. Rudy helped village because they were killing them and were threatening his life. Rudy also considering dipping when he was at severe disadvantage and if he didn't get help he would have left.

Within the world of mushoku, slaves are legal in most places and many people partake in it. Many nobles from Asura buy slaves, remember how the boreas branch of the greyrats many beastfolk servants, those servants were slaves (However, the Boreas' never treaded them like they were). Also, within the northern region of the central continent (Where rudy currently is), the economy runs of that trade.

That would be a crime, she would not only have the rest of the Notos branch after her but most likely all the royalties after her. Within that world, slaves are a normal thing, just like how our world used to view it.

With regards to Rudy not recognizing Sylphie, he last saw her when he was around 7 I think when he went to Eris home tutor. It’s been close to 8 years since then. Especially at that time I doubt anyone would recognize someone who literally grew a few feet and changed hair color and gender.

Her voice is different now, he hasn’t seen her since they were 5 year old, she went through puberty. He hasn’t seen her in about a decade. I wouldn’t remember someone i knew at 15 that i knew as a 5yr old lol

Belz actually gave this whole situation a ton of consideration which I'm really happy for. They were initially very taken aback and off put which is understandable, but I feel like they did a good job of putting that initial reaction on hold in order to consider the nuances of the situation, which is the sign of a good reactor(s) imo. Especially after seeing some reactors just make snap judgements about it and never really engaging with the situation as a whole. As for why the two situations are viewed differently, I feel like it's the difference in the tone of the show and the lead up. Shield hero went through hell and back to paint Naofumi as the unfortunate victim who had no option but to buy a slave, while Rudy's missteps and misdeeds have been thoroughly catalogued throughout the show, which leaves the viewer more on the fence about his choices as they are used to him making really, really bad ones at times. As for the tone, shield hero builds a more game-like world and, not trying to insult it, is just in general a far less... complete story I guess? At least as far as characters are concerned. Mushoku goes for more realism and spends most of its focus on characters, character relations, and the interactions characters have with the world around them. People in general are more likely to overlook things in shows that strive to entertain as the main goal rather than to get the viewer to actively engage in the nuanced morals of the characters it portrays, which now that I say it sounds pretentious as hell but I can't think of a better way to word it. I'm not saying it's fun to see people react so differently, but just that I get why. My god I didn't mean for this to turn into a small novel, I swear.

there is a lot and i mean a lot more details around the whole slavery thing in the novel like how people become slaves in the first place, there are 3 ways if i remember correctly 1. Getting sold in to slavery to pay of your debt 2. Selling yourself in to slavery, in hopes for a better life. i think this is what the more muscular slaves did in hopes of becoming bodyguards for Nobels 3. Getting kidnaped and sold in to slavery, This is illegal NOTE: in the kingdom of Renoa slavery is legal. So if Rudy tris to free them the government will take action and hunt him down, And the slavers will probably try to get him too for ruining there business. They might also go after the people close to him This is all stuff that was left out of the anime There was also a lot cut stuff around Rudy's thought's on the whole thing both with the season 1 stuff and here EDIT: I forgot to mention that some people also sold them self in to slavery so they didn't frieze to death during the cold winters of the north EDIT 2: It feels a lot more consistent in the novel due to all the details we get about how the slave trade works, And how in this kingdom it is legal Rudy did not like the whole slavery thing but he also knew there was noting he could do about it unless he wanted people to come after him and possibly the people close to him as well. As for why he seemed so normal walking in to a slave market. It was because he had seen many slave markets as he was traveling back from the demon continent and he had grown accustomed to seeing them.

The slave part is pretty messed up to see but at the same time, it’s normal for them. Rudeus comes from modern time where slavery isn’t legal and is frowned upon, however, him alone can’t do anything about the slave markets sadly. I mean, he can free a few slaves but once word catches on, he can be chased down and get into serious trouble because it’s a business and he’d be ruining it technically.

i think that she don’t want to reveal herself because she scared that rudy forget abt her. Since rudy didn’t make the link between fritts and sylphy. I think she is like « it better to build a new relationship if he doesn’t remember but if he remember it’s better »

Slavery in MT: With no social safety net the last option for the poor is slavery is in the books it's depicted as terrible. Julie is the only child in the slave traders because random poor kids don't sell so the slavers let them starve or mercy kill them. Julie's was a "good" one and fed her the bare minimum and hoped someone would take her. Also there is regions with very poor stability so many people get captured when a country falls and many are enslaved and sold to pay for the cost of wars. There isn't a lot of protections, Millis is religious so they offer basic protections. Without the support network of families or kingdoms a lot of the teleported people of the Fittoa region were enslaved if they survived where they landed. Rudeus is a coward which is why he doesn't tackle it. He's a little afraid everybody will go at him like they did paul when paul was free Fittoa slaves.

Rudy said when he got to this world he wanted normal life not to be some hero. He is not Ruijurd physically ,yes he has magic, but against someone anywhere near Ruijurd level he dies that simple,he is a glass cannon. Freeing a few slaves won’t do anything in the big picture , there 5 other slave markets in that city alone. Where would they go? Stay with him that’s out he be fugitive along with Fitz and Zanoba. The slaves he saved would have been dead or captured again. Is he supposed to making ending slavery directly his life goal? Yea if he was Rimiru he could make that happen no problem, and he didn’t even do in his world. In a world like that he needs to replace the need/ want for them, which if I remember correctly actually he does. Another point maybe he would if he wasn’t living in the city. I get it would it be awesome if he could/did yes, but how realistic is that? There very few Isakai MCs that even do stuff like that and the ones that do are OP. No it's pretty atrocious on average. The lack of ability to make most choices for yourself is terrible. But yeah rudeus has no way to support a ton of slaves and he's a coward. He fights for people he cares about but has no causes at the moment and severely under estimates himself. Fear of consequences is why he doesn't. He doesn't agree with it. spoiler Much later on a demon king offers him immortality in exchange for being he indentured gaurd and he fights tooth and nail to avoid it. The things he is thinking about then is a lot of the reasons slavery is terrible. Loss of time with family, friends, control of his destiny, etc... The demon king wouldn't even treat him poorly, he's just be a solider 10 years on 2 years off; immortal.

This anime is so controversial that it is more interesting the discussion than the reaction 😭

Rudy spent maybe 12 or 11 conscious years in his previous life while mixing with society. The rest of those years, manga, anime, light novels, video games and visual novels were his reality. Even so, he spent 15 years in this world where slavery isn't really that weird. It was said in the LN that most Ranoa's economical income comes from slavery. From Rudy's perspective, it's just something that happens. It's unfortunate, but what's he gonna do? Take on the entire country of Ranoa and every other country that deals in slavery?

The person responsible is mysterious and out of reach and he kills his away through tyrants, heroes, the elites of a lot of organizations as well, and random people in his way or just who anger him. he makes a lot of enemies because of mistakes the made. He's not murdering for the sake of it but he's also fallen off any sort of ideas or guard rails. He keeps making mistakes, abuses his bonds, losing people, and lashing out. Eventually he has no one left and is just a bitter shell of a man. And he makes a choice to try to avert this outcome. It's a dark timeline thing and his averting it is explored and has major story consequences.

About slavery and Japanese society. Japan has had a long, bloody history of conquest that most people dont know about. They regularly invaded other countries, capturing or killing everyone they came across. Unlike in America, they never had a Civil War where the popluation stood up against slavery. In the Japanese mindset, if you lose due to invasion or war, then you have no right to complain. The same is true for Japan today. If youre down on your luck, then it sucks to be you and thats that. Japan only stopped the constant invading of other countries when the rest of the world forced them to. Thats why its not TOO surprising that Rudeus isnt completely disgusted by the idea. Add on the that the plethra of horrible things he's experienced in this world already, and it makes sense that he's more calous about things like slavery. Modern day Japan, as in the our generation, are the first to have cp tact with the entire world, allowing us to share ideas and beliefs. Rudeus, on the other hand, never experienced that since he was extremely anti-social because of the bullying he suffered.

I won't spoil the main reasons, but if you are looking a "good reason" to not show the identity, remember that Ariel has ties to the Notos Greyrat family. Luke is the son of Pilemon (Paul's Brother) and Rudy had connections to the Boreas who hate the Notos. In Rudy's birthday in S1 Sauros tried to start a war with Pilemon which is the main helper of Ariel. Also Pilemon was the one who tried to make Eris his Concubine. And this was never shown on S1 but the kidnapping of Eris was suspected to have been done by Darius (Bald guy who sent the assassin to Ariel), and in the LN, Alphonse says that he believed that Pilemon wanted Eris as Concubine to give her to Darius since they both worked together to kill Sauros. And Rudy had deep connection to Sauros and Eris, so there's a good reason why Sylphie needs to be careful about her identity.

It's weird to see Rudy casually by a slave, knowing he comes from modern times. In other anime surrounding the concept of being slaves, they feel remorseful and saddened about the slaves.

I personally found the casual tone with which the show treats slavery pretty disturbing. Like it is able to convey some of the inhumanity of it whit the slaves’ despondent and blank expressions, the objectification of their naked bodies, etc. but then Rudeus interaction with the dwarf girl is all about personal, individual adversity when obviously the problem is systemic. It’s nice that this little girl has the wherewithal to keep on living and that she got lucky to be taken in by relatively good people but these “good people” don’t even question the concept of slavery itself?! You can make excuses for Sylphie and the prince since they’ve been indoctrinated into thinking this is just the way things are BUT Rudeus KNOWS BETTER he just doesn’t care

Rudy has been in that world for 16 years now. He doesn’t agree with it same with Fitz. They just cut out his thoughts on slavery as whole. Yes in most realistic shows it’s casual during a time like that. Yes if it was Rimiru he could have freed them no problem, because he Op and can dictate the world around him.
