Ruby Wax on Mindfulness

LECTURE @THE SCHOOL OF LIFE: Ruby Wax argues that by better understanding better how our brains work, we can learn to rewire our thinking and find calm in a frenetic world. Wax seeks to help us start becoming more the master, and less the slave, of our own minds.

When you learn to be mindful the first question that comes to mind is: WHY the heck did we not learn this in school as the most IMPORTANT subject of our life ? The world would be much more peaceful than it is today if we did.

Pat Meruseye this is very true, such a shame it wasn’t taught in schools, thankfully though there are videos like this online so those who want to make a change will have access to information that can help them do so.

Interesting rant, although it would've been gibberish to a lot of us in school; exploding sexually and getting around the next cool thing our peers did. First thing mindfulness kicks in I would call it The mind's puberty, and then it matures and we reshape our thinking in perspective. Why aren't we hanging out ? 07475951584

@@faygriffiths6175 Yeah, this kind of information has ALWAYS been available - also in libraries!!! But people don't look up what's good for them! They just don't. It HAS to be in school and I really don't get it why this isn't implemented - depression is THE disease in our modern societies. It's all the same here in Germany and we don't have that stuff at our schools either. So crazy!

It's interesting that she says how we can't attend to our senses and be in a stte of stress at the same time. I guess that's why I sometimes found chilli to be helpful for my OCD. Having it really hot just seemed to blast through the psychic debry like plasma. I finally found temporary relief from my obessesive thoughts and the mental pain subsided. The hard part though is finding a sensory stimuli that can over power the default mod network. Sometimes it feels like pushing a boulder up hill.

From what I am understanding, it sems important to make sure you use a POSITIVE stimuli, rather than one which the brain may see as a punishment

Chriscom28 Sounds like you've found a neat trick. You need to watch out for tolerance effects, though - you know, needing it more and more painful to get the same effect. What Mindfulness does is different - it's about practising the skill of tuning in to mild stimuli, rather than requiring the strength of the stimulus to do all the work for you. Get yourself a meditation teacher (there will probably be a Buddhist meditation centre somewhere near you) and learn how to do it. It's amazing.

  • @AlecBrady

AngieMusic Better still (in the beginning) is a neutral stimulus, since you're encouraged to suspend judgement during mindfulness. Like +Bradley Noneofyourbizz and his sandpaper.

Yup multi tasking hasn't been debunked with the fact that the mind isn't able to be conscious of two "things" at the same time, be it an emotion, a thought, or a sensual stimulus. In your case you cant be anxious AND feel the heat in your mouth at the same moment. That is why meditation and mindfulness work since these activities focus your mind on one object (usually the breath) and hold it for a long period of time to increase mental energy

Didn't know about this side of Ruby, very impressive nerd cred. We used to call the behaviour she is advocating "introspection", neuroscience is rapidly building up the details of how and why it works so well. Fortunately I was born a serotonin addict, when she asked the audience to listen for 10 seconds, I closed my eyes and my mind went blank, another 10 and I would have nodded off. :)

Ruby wax has made neuroscience, the mind & mindfulness much more accessible & so funny:) Indeed neuroplasticity means can change the neural pathways and neurons so learn things, try new things and change how you are and think can break patterns. I am on a similar journey and also interested in attachment, emotions & psychology having studied yoga for the mind.info. I am very interested in making more accessible to parents and kids so next generations can be more compassionate and understanding. Indeed as Ruby says cut down on what media etc you watch and see. Practice mindfulness, t'ai chi, yoga, swimming anything for present mind connection and the mind boy connection. I'm working on it all. work in progress WIP:)

    T. Tyson Keanum could very be the ego. But avoiding emotional well being and possibly self-development in the process because of embarrassment or social taboo is no way live for the personal growth of the individual would be inhibited because of others. Granted that it is about the individual believing that emotional well being is embarrassing and/or taboo to the first place.

First of all, I read your original comment incorrectly! I read "I don't get why this is trending". Ugh! So, my reaction was completely off base. As reacting to anything often is. My truth is that quote "hell is other people" is one I really dislike. Only because I used to believe that quote to be true. I am struggling to come back from my old belief of "hell is other people". I realize that none of this has anything to do with you. I still have much to learn. My apologies for projecting.
