Ruby Wax on Mindfulness
LECTURE @THE SCHOOL OF LIFE: Ruby Wax argues that by better understanding better how our brains work, we can learn to rewire our thinking and find calm in a frenetic world. Wax seeks to help us start becoming more the master, and less the slave, of our own minds.

Ruby is just wonderful and so brave. It can't be easy to stand up and talk about something that affects your own life, but its wonderful that she does this, and makes it sound interesting and amusing at the same time.
Ruby Wax, a truly beautiful person ... inside and out. I really admire and respect this wonderful woman. I'm in awe ❤
I love the look on the faces of some in the audience when Ruby Wax described her driving habits (11:57). Lighten up, people.

When you learn to be mindful the first question that comes to mind is: WHY the heck did we not learn this in school as the most IMPORTANT subject of our life ? The world would be much more peaceful than it is today if we did.

Pat Meruseye this is very true, such a shame it wasn’t taught in schools, thankfully though there are videos like this online so those who want to make a change will have access to information that can help them do so.

Interesting rant, although it would've been gibberish to a lot of us in school; exploding sexually and getting around the next cool thing our peers did. First thing mindfulness kicks in I would call it The mind's puberty, and then it matures and we reshape our thinking in perspective. Why aren't we hanging out ? 07475951584

So true. I'm a teacher and I don't get it either!!! I'm still an apprentice but once I'm done I'll found a "school of life" club at the school where I work! SO important and the kids are so grateful.

@@faygriffiths6175 Yeah, this kind of information has ALWAYS been available - also in libraries!!! But people don't look up what's good for them! They just don't. It HAS to be in school and I really don't get it why this isn't implemented - depression is THE disease in our modern societies. It's all the same here in Germany and we don't have that stuff at our schools either. So crazy!
Ruby has a way of making complex ideas sound so simple. Such a great speaker
This was just fantastic. I was in the front row. Ruby is phenomenal. Her books are a masterpiece and I highly recommend seeing her on tour.

What's the topic of her books, if I may ask? What would I get more in the books, that wasn't shown here? (is what my brain really wants to know)

I love this woman. I love that she was in Ab Fab. God I love her!!!!!!! And her Madonna interview was fabulous.
Ruby is one smart lady! She makes me happy!
She is brilliant! Rumination and Mindfulness..
One of the best people ever
Why School of Life doesn't upload any more long talks like this? The short videos are great but it's good to have long talks with guests and with Alain too :)

Loved this talk - perfect mix and humour and science. Survival of the wiset and hopefully kindest.
Finally someone that actually explained “Mindfulness”
It's interesting that she says how we can't attend to our senses and be in a stte of stress at the same time. I guess that's why I sometimes found chilli to be helpful for my OCD. Having it really hot just seemed to blast through the psychic debry like plasma. I finally found temporary relief from my obessesive thoughts and the mental pain subsided. The hard part though is finding a sensory stimuli that can over power the default mod network. Sometimes it feels like pushing a boulder up hill.

From what I am understanding, it sems important to make sure you use a POSITIVE stimuli, rather than one which the brain may see as a punishment

Chriscom28 I use sand paper. Really. I carry a small piece in my wallet. Focus on how smooth one side and how rough the other.
@AlecBrady

Chriscom28 Sounds like you've found a neat trick. You need to watch out for tolerance effects, though - you know, needing it more and more painful to get the same effect. What Mindfulness does is different - it's about practising the skill of tuning in to mild stimuli, rather than requiring the strength of the stimulus to do all the work for you. Get yourself a meditation teacher (there will probably be a Buddhist meditation centre somewhere near you) and learn how to do it. It's amazing.

AngieMusic Better still (in the beginning) is a neutral stimulus, since you're encouraged to suspend judgement during mindfulness. Like +Bradley Noneofyourbizz and his sandpaper.

Yup multi tasking hasn't been debunked with the fact that the mind isn't able to be conscious of two "things" at the same time, be it an emotion, a thought, or a sensual stimulus. In your case you cant be anxious AND feel the heat in your mouth at the same moment. That is why meditation and mindfulness work since these activities focus your mind on one object (usually the breath) and hold it for a long period of time to increase mental energy
Ruby honey, you always make me laugh so much. Thank you for opening up this topic to the world. Bless you xx
I love her self deprecating humor and crazy eyes!
I saw Ruby Wax live at a private function. Laughed my socks off. Now, I admire her, she made total sense.
This is so awesome! It makes so much sense to me now. Achieving this goal may be difficult, but I have to begin this journey. Thank-you for posting this. I finally feel hope.
what a wonderfull honest vibe you have !
Absolutely loved Ruby's neurolanguage!! My neurotransmitters are presenting a standing ovation!! :)
This was INCREDIBLY enjoyable - a nice dose of dark humour around an extremely important topic.
What a gem of a woman just so well worth watching
I like Ruby, she is great at delivering talks and make boring topics so interesting and funny. I hope she goes back on TV.
Thank you Ruby, I'm currently going through some stuff now 2016 & listening to you has helped me understand my mindfulness . Thank you
brilliant work rudy you have help me so much
This is a LIFE CHANGER talk/lecture, at least for myself. KZread or internet has a lot on mindfulness but this talk IS REALLY USEFUL. I request humans to listen to this with geat expectation, hopefully this will truly help.
This is Fantastic! I remember in the 90s when Ruby used to do Louis Theroux style journalism and I'd be amazed how she could experience such extremes and still be herself. Maybe it effect her afterall
Great speech Ruby , Ruby is and always has Been Awesome x
Fantastic talk. Ruby is a wonderful advocate for mindfulness
She is so brilliant. Sending love, admiration and gratitude. Shared on Facebook.

+astrophonix I agree. This is THE best video I've seen on this topic.
first time after a long time watching mindfulness talks, finally I understand what it means and how it works. I love the way she talks.
Didn't know about this side of Ruby, very impressive nerd cred. We used to call the behaviour she is advocating "introspection", neuroscience is rapidly building up the details of how and why it works so well. Fortunately I was born a serotonin addict, when she asked the audience to listen for 10 seconds, I closed my eyes and my mind went blank, another 10 and I would have nodded off. :)
Thank you Ruby for your honesty.
Amazing talk, I absolutely love Ruby
i am happy i found this... better late than never
what a great woman!!! I am impressed
2019, first I've seen this. New depths to Ruby Wax who started out as a pushy C-lister. What a great lecture! And so likeable! I play the guitar, started when The Beatles happened. That's mindfulness but you never stop learning. Great to know that you can change your mind, ain't it? Really good lecture.
Incredible!!! Really needed this! ❤
You have to laugh. It's really so important to laugh because that little moment of peace that comes with it makes us think that maybe, just maybe I can do this. I can go on.
Ruby changed my entire concept of mental illness And how I choose to deal with it, understanding the science helps me be objective about emotions and decide to stop them graduating as oppose to his submitting to them xx
Ruby wax has made neuroscience, the mind & mindfulness much more accessible & so funny:) Indeed neuroplasticity means can change the neural pathways and neurons so learn things, try new things and change how you are and think can break patterns. I am on a similar journey and also interested in attachment, emotions & psychology having studied yoga for the mind.info. I am very interested in making more accessible to parents and kids so next generations can be more compassionate and understanding. Indeed as Ruby says cut down on what media etc you watch and see. Practice mindfulness, t'ai chi, yoga, swimming anything for present mind connection and the mind boy connection. I'm working on it all. work in progress WIP:)
10/10 I loved it above and beyond. Stayed up much too late to watch this to the end. Thank you for this, made me wiser
Ruby Wax is my hero
You are GREAT Ruby!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!
Wise and wonderful. Thank you Ruby!
She is absolutely wonderful. I'm in love ♡♡♡♡

T. Tyson Keanum could very be the ego. But avoiding emotional well being and possibly self-development in the process because of embarrassment or social taboo is no way live for the personal growth of the individual would be inhibited because of others. Granted that it is about the individual believing that emotional well being is embarrassing and/or taboo to the first place.

First of all, I read your original comment incorrectly! I read "I don't get why this is trending". Ugh! So, my reaction was completely off base. As reacting to anything often is. My truth is that quote "hell is other people" is one I really dislike. Only because I used to believe that quote to be true. I am struggling to come back from my old belief of "hell is other people". I realize that none of this has anything to do with you. I still have much to learn. My apologies for projecting.
Amazing and very enlightening.
Thank you Ruby
ruby is a treasure!

I just ♡ Ruby Wax. I too have found my people. 😉
You're the best!
Anyone who finds this interesting might want to check out Eckhart Tolle. He teaches a near identical philosophy.
tried learning about mindfulness for a while and every video I come across is so vague or poorly explained. Ruby hit it on the mark!
Yes love her!!!!!!
Brilliant.
We weren't taught in school about some of the most important things in life. But we were taught how to calculate the trajectory of a cannon ball. They thought that's what really mattered.
excellent
Amazing.
