The Power of Mindfulness: Home Nguyen at TEDxTeachersCollege

In this powerful talk, Home Nguyen dares the audience to challenge their belief. In retellings of his personal experience of Vietnam Cambodia? during the war era, the separation from his family, a bold escape, and dangerous confrontation with pirates, Nguyen shares the story of an amazing journey. The journey takes him to a refugee camp, and finally to the USA where Nguyen is reunited with his father and quickly learns to adopt local customs. Not until realizing the power of meditation do memories of his amazing journey resurface. Told using his own drawings, Nguyen shares the journey of life and reflection that leads to unconditional love and real happiness.
Home Nguyen is an adjunct professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he designs and teaches programs on Self-Awareness, Mindfulness and Contemplative Practices. A current Doctoral Candidate, his research is focused on how mindfulness and wisdom can be developed at the team and organizational level.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    I met Home in 2015 in New York and have had the pleasure and privilege of regularly meditating with him using mindfulness. This work helped me navigate on of the most challenging times in my life. This story is powerful and inspiring. He is an amazing educator on the subject of mindfulness. A simple practice, for me, yielded huge results, and I am forever grateful for his wisdom, patience, and generosity of spirit.

    I have no words to describe how much this meant to me. I am very new at the practice of mindfulness and am going through huge challenges (in my small perspective)...probably mostly because my focus is still on the things that I think is important.....your message encourages me to move forward and practice...practice....practice

    Wow... this is amazing story. I was born in Vietnam but not at that time, the time of my parents and grant-parents generation, the time of what people known as Vietnam War. Thanks for sharing this story. It helps me know more about what had been going at that time. It helps me to free my mind and open my heart to the world. Thanks again.

    It is “Zen”. What was the linkage between the speaker’s experience of communists, war, and mindfulness? Unless all people in the world love meditation, no one could use it to improve the poor situation of some countries, like Afganister, Iran, Xinjiang…etc. Meditation is good for a small group of people who love it.

    Ridhi Choudhary The room should be silent. Even so, you may hear little noises. Keep focus on breath. Later, try to observe how a stimulus influences your body and mind. Dont judge whether bad feeling or good one arises. Just understand the true nature of your body and mind.

    why does it lead to unconditional love and true happiness? He lost me at the end

  • @k14michael

    @k14michael

    5 жыл бұрын

    berlinbunker - what is that state of mind that for no reason suddenly you look and look but you couldn’t find any hate anywhere? It’s call love. Unconditioned. What is that state of mind when for no reason you cannot find any fears, worries, anxieties, sadness anywhere? It’s call happiness. Truly. Where can you find this state of mind? You can’t. Because it isn’t any state of mind. It’s when you let go of your focus on the mind and then aware of your awareness. It’s like when circumstances forced Home to let go of his mind when he thought that he was going to be drown by the 20 feet waves In that one instance he saw through the illusion of the mind. He no longer pay attention to the mind. Because he was going to die. There were no need to think any longer. Just relax. Then he saw reality for what it is. One could said that he saw the wave for the first time without any thought and judgement about the waves. He was only aware of the waves. Thus, he WAS the wave! When you focus your awareness on one thing without interference of your mind then you ARE that thing! The same thing happened later in his life when he reached the 9th day of his meditation retreat. The meditation retreat force him to look at his mind 24/7. There were nothing else to do, no distractions. And when you consistently do that for a certain period of time back to back, you realized that you’re just repeating the same thoughts over and over. And by the 7th or 9th days you’re ready to let them be. Basically you lost your focus/interest on your mind. Then the magic happened, your focus now is on your focus. You become aware of your awareness. What do we call this non-state of mind. It’s call awakened. Awakened from what? Awakened from the illusion of the mind. And what is pure awareness? It has no boundaries, no boundaries means no separation, no separation is unconditional love and peace. it’s reality, life itself! Full of life, no fear, anxiety, therefore it’s joyful. True happiness! And the price? Let go of the illusion of your mind. You no longer believed that love and happiness can come from outer circumstances or your mind. It can only can come from Being.
