Rubin "Hurricane" Carter Dies at 76: Wrongly Jailed Boxer Championed Justice After Winning His Own

www.democracynow.org - The celebrated boxer and prisoner-rights activist Rubin "Hurricane" Carter has died at the age of 76. Carter became an international symbol of racial injustice after his wrongful murder conviction forced him to spend 19 years in prison before he was exonerated. Since his release, Carter championed the cause of wrongfully convicted prisoners. His ordeal was publicized in Bob Dylan's 1975 song "Hurricane," several books and a 1999 film starring Denzel Washington, "The Hurricane." We are joined by two guests: John Artis, Carter's co-defendant and close friend, who cared for him until his death; and Ken Klonsky, co-author of Carter's autobiography "Eye of the Hurricane: My Path from Darkness to Freedom," and a Director of Media Relations for Carter's group, Innocence International. We also a broadcast an excerpt from a 1994 speech by Carter about his life's struggles and triumphs. Says Artis about his close friend: "He was a David against the justice system's Goliath."

@@CoolhandLukeSkywalkr Whether he's innocent or not I have no idea. However, there was a shadow of a doubt, therefore "not guilty". Innocent and not guilty are two different things. If two of your witnesses are robbing the place that got shot up and point the finger and the other witness that got shot says it ain't him, then you got doubt. If they are bending over backwards to get a signed statement incriminating someone when they got both of you locked up then the evidence ain't exactly solid. Innocent? I don't know. Just as you don't know he's guilty. However, I hope if you are ever accused of something you didn't do that you don't get 20 years on circumstantial evidence. Because that isn't justice.

@@-elijahriggs- Hurricane Carter and John Artis were both twice convicted by a jury of their peers. This is due to the overwhelming evidence that exists against them. It was an open and shut case. Their guilt is blatantly obvious. After they served a lot of time for the murders, I think Artis served his full sentence, some completely scumbag far-left liberal activist judge set Carter free and falsely claimed the original trials were racist, they weren't. Every far left judge is a radical activist and the judge in this case was a jazz drummer whose children were huge Bob Dylan fans. The song convinced them that Carter was innocent, so they set him free. But lol, after they were convicted again in the second trial, Bob Dylan had abandoned their cause by then, because even he realized they were guilty. That is why he hasn't performed the song in 40 years lol.

Was OJ wrongly jailed? Twice convicted, Carter was temporarily released between those trials and in that short period of time he beat a woman half to death, he left her for dead. This is a woman who helped free him. He used to say that "Rubin is nice, but the Hurricane is mean, the Hurricane is angry!" Well, she met the Hurricane. Her crime? She asked him about chipping in for his hotel room bill. Her son later discovered her in a pool of her own blood. Lucky for Hurricane, she was so scared for her life that she refused to press charges. Check out the forensic evidence, he murdered those people in the Lafayette Bar. John Artis is also a killer, he had the pistol, Carter had used the shotgun, police still have the evidence! This is sick. This guy is a career criminal, after he got free for his murder spree, in the 80's he was busted for running a highly structured drug ring, he was a drug lord, big time cocaine dealer. RIP to the victims of Rubin Carter.

@@vstarcruiser7141 You have to understand that these guys just heard about his book he wrote, the 16th round, they read it, because it was popular. Bob Dylan then met once with Hurricane, I think, and some of Hurricane's people. That's when he made up a totally bullshit song about the case. The black lady who was beaten up by Hurricane, bail lady who worked to free Hurricane, she was connected to Muhammad ali, I believe. An example of how bad Bob Dylan's song is. He claims that Hurricane would ride horses, lol. the only reported encounter of Hurricane with a horse, is whe he went up to a full grown horse, and punched it full force in the head, knocking it to the ground. He wasn't a top contender for middleweight either, he was already washed up when he committed the murders, he was getting his ass beat by worthless bums at that time. Wasn't even top ten anymore. Every line of the Bob Dylan song is fake, Bob dylan made it up, from Hurricane's versions of stories, which he frequently changed his story, and he failed his lie test. The witnesses passed lie tests, and many other witnesses were too afraid of Hurricane to tell the police, scared shitless to identify this powerful homicidal nut. Guy got a dream team, like OJ, cause he wrote a book, said he was innocent. James Earl Ray tricked a lot of people into thinking he was "framed" too. Many killers use this defense, to get real evidence tossed out by the liberal judges. Same thing in the central park 5 case, there is a lot more to these stories than what the wikipedia page will admit. But then we get to the liberal bias of google and wikipedia. After Hurricane was convicted a second time, the support of the celebrities vanished. Until Denzel brought this Afrocentric-revisionist garbage back. The real reason Denzel didn't get any Oscar for that movie is because the real life victims of Hurricane protested to the Academy. Bob Dylan never song the song live again, since the mid-70s. I think he said he "has his doubts" about Hurricane's innocence now in an interview once.

I believe Rubin was innocent. I was born and raised in the city of Paterson and most cops there are dirty assholes that think they are above everyone. I once saw a police officer tell my family member (who was a Military police at the time and presented his badge to the officer and stated that he is a military officer) that he didn't give a shit what he was or what branch he was in. All we were doing was standing in front of my uncle's house having a conversation with our female friends. They had no reason to tell us to go inside the house at 5pm. They didn't give us a reason why they wanted us to go inside all he said was if we didn't that he was going to cuff us and take us in. The Police in Paterson truly suck.

Carter was born in Clifton, New Jersey, the fourth of seven children. He acquired a criminal record and was sentenced to a juvenile reformatory for assault, having stabbed a man in self defense when he was 11. Carter escaped from the reformatory in 1954 and joined the United States Army. A few months after completing infantry basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he was sent to West Germany. While in Germany, Carter began to box for the Army. He was later discharged in 1956 as unfit for service, after four courts-martial. Shortly after his discharge, he was convicted of two muggings and sent to prison.

in response to the false claims (anti-Rubin Carter hateful language & defamatory comments- please read especially those who mistakenly posted that Mr.Rubin Carter changed his declaration of innocence or lied as his story (memoir) remains accurate and the only reason or change is due to the civil litigation by one of his boxing opponents whom had no involvement of Rubin running arms to fight apartheid & having arranged a match under said guise. However why waste time with ignorance or false claims. I may disagree based on years of research but I will defend your rights just the same. Those same inalienable rights Rubin Carter was stripped of based on racism, not reason. Read his book, read the testimony, court transcripts, review the arresting officers and admitted perjured felons whose false testimony is the only evidence that took a civil rights leader and a human beings freedoms and rights away for most of his adult life. There’s more evidence indicative of his innocence and if you’re truly interested or intrigued by it then put aside politics and seek the Truth bc it is out there & while many who stole what was never theres to take have repeatedly tried to cloud the truth and hide evidence .. it has come to light for those who are truth seekers. I’m not defined by politics or progressive love for criminals. I abhor crime; which in particular is why a decade ago I began my journey to discover the truth and I hope you do too. Btw: I believe in justice for all, I don’t believe all criminals are innocent and I am strongly against violence and illicit activities so this should help support your opinions on such a horrific crime but that crime wasn’t committed by Mr. Rubin Carter and that’s just something I can’t teach or force upon you or anyone else. It’s something you must want to seek for yourself. As I began with stating I disagree with your opinion but I’ll defend your right to have it and all freedoms. Ultimately, if you believe he is a violent criminal it’s understandable to focus on the lives lost from this violent crime but i believe RUBIN CARTER IS ALSO A VICTIM ALBEIT I WISH MORE EMPHASIS WAS PUT ON THE VICTIMS WHO DIED BUT MY UNDERSTANDING IS THEIR FAMILIES/SPOKESPERSON OR ADVOCATES DID NOT WISH FOR THE INNOCENCE VICTIMS (who passed and sustained injuries) TO BE Exposed.. you also have to consider when there’s a violent crime with innocent lives lost who speaks for the dead ? It’s so sad but the court cases were intended to do so .. and justice failed the victims.. the laws that govern our society failed but the only living witness is also a victim who freed himself, the pathway from literacy to freedom. Historically it is disgusting that the only voice that has the power to tell the whole truth was murdered, blinded & paralyzed bf dying and that left the actual offenders with violent criminal backgrounds to help themselves by lying in exchange for their own freedom. Rubin and the innocent victims had their lives lost and their rights taken .. but it’s completely up to you to seek the whole truth and make your own decision, I only ask you to not stop asking questions and keep hunting for the answers and be sure you’re a truth seeker who’s interest in the facts not politics, i’m ticked this entire story hasn’t been made public for all. I personally had to fight tooth and nail at the beginning to get my hands on the reality of this.. good luck & god bless but never confuse politics or pigeonholing a supporter of Rubin Carter as being progressive politics or failing to pay respect or tribute to the victims as all I care about is the truth, the victims and upholding the laws that govern society while ensuring nobody is used as a means to an end. But please reply with the exact discrepancies you stated above as I can’t dismiss this without investigating it ALL ... Make no mistake, Rubin Carter was far from perfect .. he was flawed but not a violent criminal who committed murder and deserved to spend the majority of his adult life in bondage. Rest In Peace, unsung hero lives forever in history and the future as well as in the hearts and heads of those who sought the entire truth .. my regret is having delayed hearing him speak in person. Rubin Carter you were taken too soon & I’ll continue teaching your life to THE TRUTH-SEEKERS WHO DO NOT FEAR REALITY OR UNINTENTIONALLY OFFENDING OTHERS AS THEY FEAR IGNORANCE, INJUSTICE, and INEQUALITY above all else. It’s our responsibility to correct societal injustices. Thank you for teaching us, specifically teaching me to never stop learning and fighting for the truth as well as following Immanuel Kant philosophy- never use another as a means to an end.

It would take entirely too much time and space to lay out all the details of the injustices perpetrated against these 2 men. In short, these men had their Constitutional rights violated. Watch the movie, short documentary etc, and you will also see the ways in which this case was fabricated. Our courts rarely overturn cases unless they have irrefutable evidence of innocence or civil rights violations, both of which occurred in this story.
