“Run for Your Life” is one of a few Beatle songs where the upbeat tone of the music contrasts sharply with the dark tone of the lyrics. The French lyrics in “Michelle” are merely the translation of the English words “these are words that go together well”. This was a song, in a simpler form, that Paul used to sing to impress girls at parties when they were young. Paul resurrected and fleshed it out for this album at John’s suggestion.

@@MsAppassionata I honestly haven’t listened to too much Bob Dylan yet, though the last song of his I heard and got really into was Hurricane. I can certainly appreciate great lyrics, but I don’t listen to music for meaningful storytelling and poetry. I don’t see a reason to judge a musician on their poetry skills and I probably shouldn’t anyway as I don’t really get it, seems silly to limit what you have to say. I’m interested in the melody and rhythm and sound of the vocals, they’re an instrument. Oftentimes the meaning is completely distracting from the song and I’ll avoid the lyrics altogether. Sometimes I know the lyrics just because they’re easy to hear or because I like to sing that song, but I’d never consider the meaning of the song because it has nothing to do with music. Stories and music are different things. I’m sure people who don’t understand English are more likely to enjoy Run for Your Life better than people who do.

Been waiting for this…you definitely picked up on the maturity in both the lyrics and music…the legacy of this album is the crossing of the barrier between popular music and “serious” music. After Rubber Soul, no one ever dismissed them as “teeny-bopper” music again. Been loving your journey. I call Rubber Soul the inflection point in The Beatles evolution, because everything changes from here out. Revolver kicks that into another gear, and Sgt Pepper blows the lid off. Your next few Beatles reactions are going to be interesting…cheers…

Jesse, great reaction, your best yet! This really was the album where The Beatles diversity and an unending search for new sounds began and from this point, they were like a giant snowball rolling down a mountain, getting bigger and bigger until they split. I think some milk I was drinking came out of my nose when the electric guitars came in on I’m Looking Through You and you made that sound. I think you’re really going to enjoy listening to all of the albums to come, and you’ll be a life long Beatles fan!

Unrelated to the reaction but still Beatles related. A very important Beatles documentary was just released on Disney+ called "The Beatles: Get Back". It's basically just footage of them making their last album Let It Be and it was restored in 4k. It's to celebrate 50 years of the album. It was originally 150 hours of footage but it was minimized to a 3 part 8 hour long docu-series. It's extremely eye opening, even for hardcore Beatles fans like myself who thought they knew everything about them. It's a very deep dive into their genius creative process. You almost feel like you're writing the songs with them. It's also a very deep dive into their authentic personalities and who they were as just plain human beings when not being interviewed. Seriously a must-watch. Currently the first 2 parts have been released in the last 2 days and part 3 will be released tonight. But anyways I obviously don't recommend you watch it until you get to Let It Be lol, but just thought I'd let you know in case no one else did.

Lol....great reaction. Don’t know if you really caught what happens lyrically in Norwegian Wood. Norwegian Wood was a very popular wall paneling in the 60’s. The character in the song goes over to sleep with the woman, she shows off her Norwegian Wood walls, she doesn’t sleep with him, he wakes up in the tub, and she’s gone, so he burns down her place lol. “Isn’t it good Norwegian Wood?” Lennon was a nut :)

One thing to note is that the British/international version of RUBBER SOUL (which you reviewed) and the U.S. version of the album had a slightly different tracklist that made it seem more uniformly acoustic than the British/international version. Hence, American fans from the 1960s tend to think of RUBBER SOUL as the Beatles' folk rock album while those who are more familiar with the original British/international version do hear it as, indeed, "rubber soul."

  • @skylargray5642

Rubber Soul is definitely the bridge between the 2 eras of Beatles. Early 60s rock n roll vs late 60s psychedelia and you can hear both in this album which is awesome. Fittingly this bridge album came out in 1965, the exact middle of the 60s. My favorites on the album are Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, In My Life and If I Needed Someone. Rubber Soul is in my top 5 favorite Beatles albums. My favorite is Revolver and I'm excited for that reaction! Get ready!

  • @hubabava

Great reaction(s)!! I like it how you look up background information. It adds a lot to the review! I saw you wondering about You won't see me and I saw comments on Wikipedia how McCartney didn't like his girlfriend to pursue a career. It's made him the target for many as it makes him look very chauvinist. But.... he never stated this in interviews, nor did his girlfriend at the time. The comment or the book it came from must have been written by a McCartney hater! Many couples break up and you could give the valid reason that you broke it of because you saw little of eachother because you both had careers. That's something different than stating the guy didn't allow the woman to have a career. This song is from 1965 and the couple stayed together into 1968, both having their careers. So... if McCartney forbid her a career, she obviously didn't listen and he didn't break it off. What then is the credibility of this statement? It would've been different had she given up her career because he wanted it. But in that case: she had means, she was independent. A decision to stop acting could've been her own choice that also suited his needs. No... I don't get the statement and it sheds a negative light on McCartney... That's an injustice in my opinion

I love watching you go on your Beatles journey 😊 I have to go back to the late 80s to when I heard these songs for the first time when my Dad played them constantly in the car. Something that started my life long passion of all things Beatle. My Mum really doesn’t lie when she says my brother and I know every word to every song they ever recorded 😂 But anyway, I always put this album as being on a par with A Hard Day’s Night when I’m ranking my favourite albums. There’s no doubt that this album is where they really start using the studio as an instrument and their lyrics become more sophisticated. The only song that I wish I didn’t like is Run for Your Life, because the lyrics are brutal and even John Lennon disowned it in later life, despite it being intended as a parody of an earlier Elvis track which had the line “I’d rather see you dead, little girl, than to be with another man.” Like you say, it’s annoyingly catchy 😂 In My Life really is a big deal. Whenever I try and compile my list of top 10 Beatle songs, 2 of the 3 Lennon compositions in that list are from this album; In My Life and Nowhere Man. So, next you have Revolver. I’ll try not to big it up, but there’s a reason it is Numero Uno on my album ranking list. Music is subjective, but in my opinion you’re about to listen to the greatest album of all time! Ok, so I failed not to give you high expectations 😂 By the way, if you think you needed to be high to listen to Rubber Soul… 😉

another thing to know is that the version you listened to is the UK version of Rubber Soul.. the North American version that Americans and Canadian grew up with is a little different.... it only has 12 tracks... It's missing What Goes On, Drive My Car, Nowhere Man, and If I Needed Someone, which are replaced by two other songs... I've Just Seen A Face, and It's Only Love... the UK version has more variety, but the North American has a more solid mood about it.... most people would say they like the UK version better, but I've always preferred the North American version because it puts me in a certain zone... whereas What Goes On always rips me out of that zone... the songs removed from Rubber Soul were included in a separate North American release called Yesterday and Today

A couple of things here, "Run For Your Life" was a throw away that he hated, they needed a song. He nicked the lyric "I'd rather see you dead little girl than too be with another man" right off Elvis Presley's "Baby Let's Play House"so for anyone that says this line is very dark then blame Elvis. Lennon didn't like this song at all, he said it was garbage by him to fill a track. "Wait" was from the Help sessions, again they needed a song and were out of steam, they had a deadline too meet. You must realize up through "Rubber Soul" The Beatles released two lp's a year plus three to four singles plus Ep's up through "A Hard Day's A Night" and this was all through Beatlemania. If you weren't alive at the time one could never appreciate what they accomplished up through 66. No artist from that time through now could never accomplish what they did. These guys had too beg for a day off. Everyday it was a photo session or interviews with the press or magazine's or meeting some stupid politician or the mayor. There tours were filled with this crap especially when in America. The mayor's daughter or the congressman's daughter wanted too meet The Beatles . That's why they quite touring after 66, they couldn't take the insanity of Beatlemania anymore. I would suggest that if you want too see Beatlemania at it's peak, the craziness of it all then go on u tube and bring up the film The Beatles Live At Shea Stadium, 1965. Stadium rock was created that night by them. 56,000 screaming maniacs out of their minds. This was the first time anyone ever sold out a stadium. Today it's commonplace but they were the first as they were with everything. I was fortunate enough too see them in September, 1964 in Pittsburgh when I was six years old, it was crazy. The Beatles only ever played for 30 minutes at their shoes because anything after that would have not been safe for them or the crowds, it was like near riot conditions and not out of anger but out of love. The Shea Stadium film is actually in really good color and the sound is very good for 1965 technology. They couldn't hear a note they played because they had no fold back speakers on stage. They also had box make them special 100 watt amps for the dhow, could you imagine that, they went up from the normal 25 watt amps too 100. They were just ahead of their time as always. The technology just wasn't available yet for large shows like that. The Beatles were four very special young men and there will never be another and Rolling Stone should be ashamed at what they did too The Beatles on this 2021 revised list of greatest LPs ever. They will never get another dime of my money. This new guard young hipster bunch are a joke. They actually have a Biggy Smalls Lp as the second greatest Lp of all time (excuse me a second while I puke in my mouth) what a joke and I'll leave this list at that. The nerve of these little pricks. The Beatles, hands down the greatest too ever do it and it ain't even close. You're in for a hell of a journey the rest of the way you man. Fasten your seatbelt ! Oh and I meant the Ep's we're up through 64, the 3 to 4 singles a year were right up through 65. ✌️☮️💕

The name "Rubber Soul" is *probably* not anything more than a play on "rubber sole"- which describes the construction of an average shoe. If you were clever, you might change the word "sole" to "soul", and name a mid-60's, game changing album after it. You might also take the name of an insect, and spell it with "beat--", because you were looking for a name for your rock band...

Women were expected to put their careers second (or have no career at all) prior to the woman’s movement of the 1960’s and 70’s. That was the common attitude, not just his.

It was originally planned for Rubber Soul and Revolver, along with the singles "Day Tripper," " Paperback Writer," "We Can Work It Out," "Rain," & "Elanor Rigby" to be released as a double album. Unfortunately, George Martin shot the idea down. They would have created the greatest album of all time. In my opinion, Revolver and Rubber Soul are already superior to Sgt. Pepper.

@@ronalddobis6782 Yes, the production work on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is superior to Rubber Soul and Revolver but overall I prefer the compositions of these two to some of the tracks from Sgt. Pepper (not a fan of "Fixing a Hole", "She's Leaving Home", "Lovely Rita" and "Good Morning Good Morning").

Jesse: "why would she put her acting career 2nd" You realise women were heavily objectified prior to the 70s... As for Johns sexist lyrics on Run for your Life - as bad as John's Misogynistic lyrics were, he became a big feminist activist in the 70s. And one of the most important.

If you had, you would have noticed I was defending both Paul and John for their sexist actions due to being from a different time. And if you're telling me to shut up because I called John a feminist icon of the 70s, I suggest you look into the vast differences in 1st, 2nd and 3rd wave feminism. I am not any of the above mentioned, nor am I - for example - Muslim. However I recognize Muhammed Ali as an icon of the Nation of Islam.
