That is awesome, that was my video card. It actually worked incredibly well under load with that messed up connection. I stressed tested it with MW2, Starfield and 3D Benchmark and no issues. Word to the wise, do not use cablemod's 90/180 degree adapters.

Alex's method with the solder sucker seemed to work pretty well, think he has it pretty figured out.

It is because it's leaded solder that's why. You see factories for supposedly environmental reasons use only lead-free solder without realizing that it's much more brittle and therefore prone to breaking which renders cards useless filing landfills full of them creating a much greater environmental disaster because you see stupidity runs in this world really high.

Oh boy, 12VHPWR connector. There are so many problems with them especially within RTX 4090s. Good job Tony! MAGICAL!

the size isn't really the problem the engineering is. The connector has far too much wiggle room when it is plugged in, basically if its latched in you can move it too far out.

@@Stringmaster413 They sort of did recently after some of them caught on fire, they adjusted the tolerances on the plastics and socket stampings and then pulled back the detection pins so if the connector wiggles out even a little, the GPU should stop drawing power and alert you. All the large 12 pins are current carrying. On the classic connectors, on the 6-pin 4-pins are current carrying and on the 8-pin it's 6 pins. Plus the pin current rating isn't that difficult to calculate empirically just from known designs, so that's not a problem. The pins being closer together than in the classic connector isn't a problem either, since those were plain too generous for 12V use, you don't need a 65V connector here, cross arcing is just not a hazard at low voltage like this. They just needed to ensure that the connector actually seats properly, and it seems like some manufacturers did a better job than others, the spec left a little too much wiggle room, pardon me. So it's all perfectly adequate and workable ideas and general design, just let a few too many detail engineering mishaps slip through. They definitely should have prototyped and tested it that much better before letting it loose in the wild.

This video was timely, for me. I've been reading about de/re-soldering PCIe power receptacles; this is the first in-depth video demonstration I've seen. I've got 3 Radeon VII coolers that I want to put on MI25s(WX9100s). Unfortunately, The PCI-e Power inputs are 'in the way'. I was considering moving the power inputs using some heavy AWG 'bodge wire' and hotgluing the inputs to the new position on the PCB. However, (clearly) I do not have the tools and consumables for this (currently).

That's the way, minimal tool usage. I just use to dip the pins into fluxhoney before attaching the "spiderleg" chips n connectors into the pcb. Loved the closeup view!

Great repair video. You make soldering look easy. Trust me, it's not or I just suck at it. I skipped the 4000 series and I'm glad I did. Who's got $2K for a graphics card. Besides I suck at FPS games. More of a RTS guy. Thanks for your videos.

My GB 4070 Gaming OC uses the same cooler design. It's a bit smaller than the 4080's but still massively overbuilt for this chip, I reckon. And it's doing a great job of keeping things cool. The card will allow setting the power target to around 300W (143%) - realistically it'll only ever draw 240W, but even at that load, only the hotspot temp will ever go above 70°C. And that's with a manual OC with the core boosting to almost 3000 MHz and the VRAM OCed by 1000 MHz. I suppose I could go even higher on the VRAM because I've never seen it break 60°C under full load. If you don't mind the added bulk and extra cost, this is a great cooler, IMO. That said: I wonder what happened to that power-connector. I've been paranoid about that thing on my card since I got it, because of all the negative press this new type of connection has received. Even though I have an ATX 3.0 PSU with a dedicated 12VHPWR cable/plug, I find it quite impossible to install the plug in the recommended fashion. There's plenty of space between the card and the glass side-panel in my case, but the weight of the cable will make it bend down almost immediately after the wires leave the plug - nothing I can do about that. I was thinking of getting one of those Cable-Mod 90° plug adapters, but I'm reluctant to spend another €40 on just a plastic plug-adapter. An adapter which, let's face it, shouldn't even be necessary if Nvidia had done their homework on this connection.

got the same card, been running a yr w/no issues, got it during release of the 4080 series, stable 2.9ghz OC..did add a 90 degree adapter to it as it was bending against my glass panel on my case...getting ready to swap mobos soon, so hope dont run into any issues w/my gpu, knock on wood lol nice vid :)

2:28 PowerColor Red Devils have a similar large copper block/vapor chamber like that on the RX 6700xt to 6950xt. The 6700xt-6750xt coolers are just a few MM thinner but the same overall, they run very cool.

Interesting that this "Faulty" connector still exists! Thought the manufacturers replaced them with a better design. Looks like meatball surgery to cut the pins to remove the connector. Heard of some horror stories where the customer demanded the old/broken part after having something replaced/fixed and was denied because of "Disposal" reasons and find out later that the old part was a hacked bodged job to fit the new part.

It still exists because it was sold with a faulty connector to begin with... It shouldn't be "interesting" at all. More cases will add up the longer time goes on. Due to a small sample size during testing, it was never found until it was sent out to the world. It's expected that it's still around, not interesting.

GDDR6X RAM is hot in general. Doesn't matter what card has it. This is known and expected. That's why there is a stronger cooler design for it.

If yours is still intact, just make sure it's seated all the way and you shouldn't have any issues with high resistance and melting.

Of course they can. There has been a revision of the connector, but all cards that us the old connector are prone to such damage, including the 4080 AND 4070Ti. But using less power makes it less likely to happen... Edit: Apperantly the old connector uses wrong tolerances for the pins and probably the wrong material, making the pins softer then usual. And those softer pins then get deformed leading to bad connections, which then get hot and melt the plastics.

I hope you take on apprentices to pass on your knowledge and skill. I mean, where does one even go to learn how to do this sort of thing? Amazing.

Will say that my 6800 XT's 3x8-pin is kind of a PITA to cable manage neatly, but I'd much rather deal with an additional cable to hide than worry about whether or not I'll have a 12VHPWR pin melting down. I do think nVidia had the right idea with 12VHPWR, but the execution was embarrassingly bad for a company that has been making GPUs for as long as nVidia has been. This is not an experience a $1000+ GPU should be giving someone.

I have 5x RTX4080 cards and 1x RTX4090 card running Folding@home (~100M PPD) and have had no troubles with the connectors. Just plug them in correctly and don't put too much strain on them.

I've been running an ASUS TUF 4080 for six months now with no issues, knock on wood.

I have no education in soldering, only a little bit of experience, by just using the iron and solder wire, now I learned about flux and how it makes the job easier and premium since it flows the solder to both sides and the inside so the solder doesn't just sit on the top and the inside and otherside aren't empty, right?

What soldering iron do you use, and what kind of soldering station would you like to buy if your budget is not limited?

It's a gigabyte, not surprised it broke. I've had a 3070 brand new with matrix green dots.

How I would remove a connector like that would be to snip the power pins and just rock the connector back and forth between the ground tabs and the sense wires, melt the back of the connector with a soldering iron until you can get in there with the snips. Not sure how covered they are in the original connector. No idea if this would work haven't had to work on one thankfully 😁

It hurt you to put that low melt 😂😂😂 since north ridge did this method u had to do it differently though by cutting the pins love this competition

In my opinion, you shouldn't post this type of video of such a simple repair, you are far superior than that, it looks better with the simple Northridgefix, but it was worth watching just for the memes. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

How often do you see 4080 on your repair bench for melted connector issue?

Two of the pins on my old Vega 56's connector are broken as well, and i suspect it is the cause of my recent issue where the pc just completely shut down when i play games, given it's age, it is obviously out of warranty and not worth paying someone to repair it, i guess it is the excuse in need to finally buy a new card.....

The owner should be informed that the GPU connector on his PSU unit should be replaced as well.

I visually checked the connections on the PSU and ran voltage checks, the video card turned off and the white led turned on upon initial melting, so no melting ever got passed the crappy cablemod 180 degree adapter.

the pcb seems to be prepared to accept a 2nd connector, wouldnt it be possible to add a second one ? That would double the contact surface.
