    I replaced a couple of VGA connectors recently. I did use low melting solder, and desolder gun up to 150C just to pre-heat the board. The actual melting was done with normal solder tip T-shape, to get the low melt within through the pins. I sucked the with a gun like you did, ensured nothing was connected and removed it. Unfortunately a blob of solder was between the connector and the board, on the side we cannot see, and lifted a trace on the H synch pin. I repaired like you did, soldered a small copper wire through the whole until the backside, and protected with green mask. Worked very well. As for wholes that still get solder and resist to suction, I learned another trick… put a nozzle on the dessolder gun, and blast just the whole clogged hole, eventually the solder will be expelled on the other side. I do also put tape on small components around, it saves the hassle to fix when they move. i know you are experienced with this, and you do have references to crosscheck like other boards, we normal people don’t have these resources normally, so better just to avoid it. Greetings from South America

    Tony, a trick I learnt to remove a component with a row of pins is to solder a bare copper wire across them. Then, with a strong enough iron you can heat up the wire (so melt the solder across all at the same time) to then drop the component.

    I know it's old news but: Still amazed at this level of fine repair work being possible. When surface mount technology first came out; board replacement was the only option. Glad to see these skilled repair techs figured it out! By the way, that card still had the clear protective sheets on 2 of the fan hubs, LOL! Long term balance issues; maybe???? Won't a proper support bracket on the far end be good enough for conventional mounting? I started doing that since the 20 series cards and have had no issues. My son's 4070Ti I built for him was 4+ pounds and had a support bracket installed too. Plus he transported the machine back to his house 500 miles, (I made sure he laid the case it on it's back for the trip for added safety.) All is good thus far 7 months later.

    4070ti is an amazing card. it should have come with 16gb of ram... and now the super (for the same price) is exactly that. but i dont think im spending 800 again haha. The use of L2 cache to compensate for the smaller bus is something a lot of people overlooked, and is why the card can cook a 3090 (which as more ram and almost 3x the bus). I love the low power usage, too. Card was perfect sweet spot for me.

    Some HDMI cables have VERY aggressively shaped metal locking tabs and will not come loose unless you depress the release tabs properly. I've seen some major damage to these ports by older people and younger people because they simply apply more muscle to the problem. Seems to be a great overlap between people who can't see up close and those who do this type of damage.

We finally paid off the no interest Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC for our young teen and added an edge GPU support bracket to go along with the included bracket near the MB so I hope to avoid the sag issue. EVGA RTX 2080 Ti XC Ultra is what I'm still using, which is still fine for Warzone, but I cheaped out by strapping a popsicle stick behind the power cable as a GPU support.

    Awesome job with that tough fix! What component of a graphics card determines the version of the DisplayPort connection? Is it part of the I\O on the GPU itself or is there a chip somewhere on the board that controls it? I'm wondering for 2 reasons - why do you think the 40 series only have DP 1.4 (cost cutting doesn't make sense)? And is the DP upgradeable from 1.4 to 2.1, how would that work? Thanks.

  • @arromger

    @arromger

    4 ай бұрын

    It's a combination of everything: the connector, the GPU core itself, the firmware on the GPU, the pcb design (trace lengths, optimisations for signal integrity, copper balancing, noise reduction, etc) as well as the circuitry driving the DP signals. So, there is no way to upgrade the hardware to support DP 2.1 from 1.4.

    Hi Tony, thanks for sharing your work with us! As an interested tinkerer, I'm wondering if (and how) you care for workplace ergonomics. Would be a shame, having to give up a hobby/career/calling because you bent your neck out of shape over time. The time lapses make it look like a breeze, but it'd be great to know how long you actually worked on thesse boards (e.g. clock/timer in the background or as overlay). Something that grounds these in reality, making it even more educational. Could even serve a bit to manage customer expectations / misconceptions ot a "quick fix". Time lapses make it look magical. Also easy to forget the actual effort behind all that. How much real time did you spend, heat soaking the boards? What temperature did you set your hot air to assist? Did you change these settings over time? Are there early warning signs to look out for before bulging occurs? Thanks! I appreciate your content a lot! Cheers, Mo

Since I saw that concept I don't want any other case but unfortunately the CTE cases are still not available in my country. I know there are plenty if cases supporting sort of a vertical mount with a rizer but I don't like it.

    If my GPU had an issue with the HDMI port and it is known that specific port only but other DP are working fine . I would have two options 1. I would have RMAed the Card if still under warranty. 2. If not in warranty I would have just bought a Display port to HDMI adapter for about $20. Now I understand bussiness is bussiness and you must do what the customer says. But value logic more than money. Heck I would have told the customer that the better solution is to Buy an DP to HDMI adapter or RMA the card.

PS: If you think this GPU is heavy.. wait until you slap some waterblocks and put water through it.. it will more than 3 kg in weight. If the GPU is secured properly (in all 3 points) there is no way you can crack the PCB. (I guess you never saw 4-way SLI made out of GTX Titan back in the day) Marvelous repair as always :D

    I can imagine a few scenarios... shipping without proper support, a pet throwing your tower over, let a curious child see the "cool lights" inside the PC, only for their little hands to explore a bit too vigorously. You may or may not be able to relate to the "I'm sure it's fine to move the PC (or something attached to it) just a little without unplugging everything" rationale or the optimistic "I can fit one more thing on this desk". Life happens ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 😅 And I agree. Great job, Tony!

    two 4090 videos from two channels at the same time. considering the construction of the 4090 vs a lesser card, it does not cost much more to produce 4090 vs a cheaper card or the cheapest 4000 series card. People should not be paying this much for a 4090

    People that are buying these 4090's, and winding up with HDMI port damage, makes me chuckle. Either they're hooking them up to large format TVs that lack display port, or they really don't understand the benefits of DP.

    I'm fine with it. Not many games display over 4k@120 hz consistently(4090 user), and the latency and colour are fantastic on this TV. I was debating a G9 but I prefer the vertical real estate of a TV. I like that my GF can use it for netflix or whatever as well and its not isolated to my PC. @penumbrum3135
