At this particular time no one knew how good this German team was. With Ballack's injury they lost their only star. Mueller, Oezil, Neuer, Kedhira were still very young and unknown, even Lahm, Klose and Schweinsteiger weren't the superstars they would become afterwards. They were extremely relieved when they beat Australia, lost against Serbia, played poorly against Ghana (1:0). The matches against England and Argentina showed what they were capable of but they lacked continuity and stability, maybe some self confidence too. England had great players, some good moves and opportunities but poor team spirit and a lack of discipline. Every team has to overcome setbacks but they didn't, maybe because of a lack of confidence in themselves or the manager's strategy.

@@FannyShmellar For me, England have been making hay while the sun shines in a poor period in international football, while at the same time, the lower standard of the current crop of English players seems to help them play as more of a team (rather than the old English thing of 11 individuals and forcing all the Galacticos into the same lineup), so in a way it's a bit like one step back in quality, two steps forward in team play.

Drum Tracks Direct Probably some truth in saying that certain nations haven’t been at their pinnacle of late, but England are doing things they would never have done in recent times. They would never have won a penalty shootout at a tournament, they would never have beaten Germany and they would certainly never have made a final. I’m not sure you how can say they’ve taken a step back in talent, they have an absolute glut of quality. Even lads that don’t make the squads are absolute quality players.

Are you kidding me. I watched EVERY England qualifaction match and they were awful at home. Away from home they played quite well. Here's what's wrong with English football - typical routine: Joe Hart humps the ball up to rooney who wins the header and knocks it back to Lampard. Lampard passes it back to Ashley Cole. Cole goes back to Ferdinand who panics and passes it back to Joe Hart. Hart hits the ball up field the ball goes out and or/Andorra/Luxembourg/Liechtenstein get the ball back.

Capello was a decent manager. He led a team that was lucky to get out of the group stage to the round of 16. Unfortunately for him, the English fans and media expected way too much from their subpar team, as usual. England is similar to teams like USA and Mexico, skill-wise. The difference is that USA and Mexico are happy to get out of the group stage while England is disappointed not to make it to the quarterfinals. Because of this, England usually disappoints while USA and Mexico make their fans happy. England is not a world class team that can make it to the semifinals, and should not be treated like one.

English ppl always have high expectations because the English clubs dominated more or less the CL back then, plus the PL was the best league in the world ...so its normal they have high expectations. They dont realise much of the English clubs success comes from the foreigners, the drogbas, agueros, van persie....And tbh i veer understood whats whith all the hype with capello. He is a decent manager yes, but he is no mourinho or guardiola..And you are right when you say this is a subpar England team. This generation really had its peak in 06 world cup .Remember how good the english clubs were in 05-08 period in the CL,Thats when gerrard,ferdiannd...peaked.Unfortunately for them they missed euro 08.

TheLusianPopa I really don't see how someone can consider a team like Chelsea or Man City and English team. They rely almost solely on foreign players. I think English teams should start actually using English players. Maybe then the national team might not fail miserably every major tournament. The English fans and media compare their team to the likes of Brazil and Germany, but in the end, they have a hard time reaching the quarterfinals of the World Cup. Also, I wouldn't say the English teams dominated before the 2010 World Cup. Barcelona, Milan, and Bayern were all better than every English team at that time. Man U was good too, but the rest of the English teams were not really that great either.

TheLordoftheRavens What are you talking about ? 2005 Liverpool a team who only finished fifth in the league won the champions league. 2006 Arsenal made it to the final and only lost because they were down to 10 men, 2007 liverpool made it to the final again, 2008 it was an all English Final between Chelsea and Man U and Liverpool were in the semi finals, 2009 Man U made it to the final again. That was 4 years of total dominance by English Clubs. With the exception of Arsenal those other 3 relied heavily on English players, Chelsea had Terry and Lampard, Liverpool had Gerrard and Man U had Rooney and Ferdinand amongst others. Of course people were going to expect more from England at that time. 2004 and 2006 were the tournaments where on paper we were one of the best 4 teams in the world, were it not for terrible management by Sven then we should have made at least the semis. Even with the terrible management Portugal only beat us with a penalty shootout. Yes 2010 was one tournament too far for that generation of players, in hindsight now that is easy to see but at the time the only German Club who had done anything in europe was Bayern Munich who I think only had 1 good tournament in 1 year out of the last 5. (semis or better ) Compare that to 4 English Clubs reaching the semis or better 10 times over 5 years.

Mick W It's true that the Premier League had a lot of world class teams in the timespan you just described, but again, they relied heavily on foreign players, like Ronaldo on United or Lehmann on Arsenal. Did you know 68% of players in the Premier League are not English, compared to 39% foreign in Spain and about 45% foreign in Germany? So don't go telling me that English clubs don't have a massive influx of foreign stars. Now, if England was really as good as you described, then they should have actually been successful in those tournaments. But it was always pretty obvious that players like Zidane and Ronaldo were much better than every English player, so on paper, England really did appear to not have such a great side. It's just like in 2010 before the Germany vs. England game, where the English media distorted the facts and claimed English players were better on paper than German ones. In what world were the likes or Rooney and Lampard ever better than Klose or Schweinsteiger? It's outrageous to say something like that. Everyone knows that the Germany players were better overall, and that they played well as a team and had much more success in the group stage than England. So tell me, on what paper does it say England had a great team?

  • @TheLusianPopa

Englishmen are very proud of their beloved PL, they asume that if rooney and lampard have wages twice as big as schweinsteigger and klose then they clearly are better players.England doesnt really produce top class players , while the spanish and germans produce dozens of great players.English players play better in their clubs than in their national teams, same happens with messi, ronaldo...its soemthing i've been noticing in the past decade or so...i think english players also play better in their clubs because there is less pressure there.Well lets face it back in 2010 no one had ever heard of khedira, ozil, and a few others....i mean they werent completely unknown but no way they were stars, and also , back then the bundesliga wasnt as good as now, so very few ppl watched it, quite normal they didnt know many of the players. The percentage of foreigers is huge in England, but i would be really interested in how many are in the first eleven.Because chelsea might have 19 foreigners but only play 5....get it? English media always overrates its players, clubs, national team...nothing new.

Exactly, on Sky Richard Keys and Andy Gray were in LA covering the World cup and I know Andy is Scottish and they generally don't want England to do well but he went to the fact that the goal shouldn't have been disallowed but it shouldn't be used as an excuse and Richard agreed, and I agree as an England fan. Sure the game might have changed in the second half and I do believe that there is a difference between going into half time 2-1 down and at level scores but at the end of the day the Germans were too strong and too powerful for us

The vision of the Germany FA has to applauded, over losing the 2002 WC, they changed the way club players were developed and have succeeded. A strong German team, and two finalist in the ECC.

It is not that simple. England simply do not have the technical skill to compete at that level. There are only 4 teams in the EPL that actually play passing football like what the Germans, Dutch and Spanish are capable of. Both Gerrard and Lampard are two of the most overrated players I have ever seen. They cannot pass the ball and they cannot control the game with vision. Carrick, Gerrard and Lampard would have given a very good game to this Germany midfield with Gerrard going up against Khedira (the two box-to-box midfielders), Carrick against Ozil and Lampard against Schweinsteiger. Carrick would have been responsible for providing the platform and setting the tempo, Gerrard would provide the energy and up the tempo and Lampard would have been the 10. Considering all three of those players have won the CL, it would be very defeatist to think they could not match the German midfielders.

*Long comment ahead!!!!* Coming from an Englishman, "The Golden Generation" was overrated as *crap!* The *only* world class players that England produced during that period in my opinion were Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick and Rio Ferdinand (a Man United trio who were all treated *terribly,* with one of the trio finally having the sense to quit and focus on club pursuits instead of wasting time before being driven out like the two latter), Ashley Cole, Michael Owen (when he was fit) and maybe Frank Lampard (if some manager knew that he was a striker and not a striker in midfield). *5 definiates and 1 potential in all!* There were at the time hardly any strikers - Jermain Defoe and Darren Bent at the best of times were both flaky, but Peter Crouch & Emile Heskey? *Come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* The so-called "speed-demons" like Aaron Lennon, Theo Walcott and Shaun Wright-Philips were ineffective. John Terry was average as *heck* and a liability (alas countless managers built the team around him instead of Ferdinand which was *beyond* criminal). Wayne Rooney could have and might have been world class when he was the on the right side of 20, but could never kick on from his Everton years (another Terry in my eyes). Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Owen Hargreaves, Sol Campbell, Jamie Carragher, The Neville Bros. were good players, but were *never* world class. David Beckham, while decent at best, was *completely* overrated : great man, great servant and all that, but he could *only* do dead balls, useless Hollywood passes and free kicks (he might as well misinterpret it for "American Football"). Most of the midfielders like Gareth Barry, Scott Parker, James Milner, David Bentley, Jermaine Jenas, Stewart Downing etc. were let's say, "bang-average" at best. A lot of the defenders were below-average to plain horrid, like Glen Johnson, Phil Jagielka, Matthew Upson, Joleon Lescott, Gary Cahill, Wayne Bridge etc. Goalies? *pah!* David James, Joe Hart, Robert Green, Scott Carson, Paul Robinson .... *sums the whole thing up.* What we badly needed was a proper holding/attacking midfielder in a Modric/Ronaldo mould (probably was someone out there somewhere), but because managers were too scared to drop both/or either Lampard or Gerrard, it went unattended. *At the least* have Lampard on his own as an attacking midfield if you must! And when they finally did, they *unbelievably* chose Barry over Carrick. *Don't get me started* on picking Terry over Rio as captain!!!! Just really in the end; terrible management that was built around the wrong players, captains, tactics, formations etc. *No wonder* they never came close to winning anything. Greece had no stars *at all,* but with a good team ethic and coach, they won the 2004 Euros with a previous pathetic record and hardly anyone knowing who Otto Rehhagel was. You *at least* need a functioning, coherent team/management to success at international level, not a collection of *so-called* stars being led a *supposedly* world class management.

Many ex-players like Roy Keane and Alan Shearer have been saying this for years. The FA is completely at fault here. Their minds are poisoned by short-term gains instead of long-term commitments. The FA also doesn't support any type of style in the senior team. You watch teams like Argentina, Spain, Germany, and The Netherlands and you can identify their play style. England doesn't have one. Too many individuals on that pitch right now.

What did you *expect* when the FA are run by businessmen who have *never* been influenced by sport in their entire lives and expect international football to be like club football. They expected Capello to wave a magic wand on the England squad like he did with Real Madrid, forgetting the fact that it *IS* a completely different plate of pasta compared to club football. Germany are/were run by people who understand football of all kinds. England were run by people who held no difference to football *then* let's say running a cod factory, along with the fact they were completely cowed by the ever-mighty Premier League. They also dithered on St. George's Park in Burton (which opened 10 years *too* late), and employed the likes of Stuart Pearce (a journeyman left-back who struck lucky internationally during an era of Lineker/Gascoigne/Shearer) to run England youth teams who *himself* had *little to no* interest in youth development aside giving him something to do until management in club football (probably just ending up at a League 1 or 2 team) came calling again (not to mention Pearce was an *almighty* follower of Charles Reep's hoofball bible). He and his FA employers *alone* were the epitome of 2002-2016 England national team in a nutshell.

English players lack the stamina to win a great tournament. You need a winter-break guys.Without a break the english team is too exhasted to go through a tournament. One can see it every time in the second half they are totally knackered

England need a strong and aggressive leader who can bring the best out of the players. It has been very long that England has not won any major tournaments like euros and even world cups since 1966.

They need more than a aggressive leader in charge, even the best manager ever would struggle to get a successful England team, the players are just not good enough at international level (in terms of technical ability and skill), we are years behind teams such as Germany, Argentina, Spain, etc, it basically comes down to grass roots levels being 20 years behind the teams I've just mentioned and not enough English players getting a chance in the premier league cause of all the foreign players, granted I know the fa changed the grass root levels about 2 years ago to how they train youngsters in Germany, Spain etc, but we will not see if has worked for at least 10 years, they should have changed it when everyone else did years ago.

Maybe the Golden Generation didn't really underachieve. *They just weren't that good.* Players like Ozil, Neuer, Khedira for Germany in that game when on to win the next World Cup. The only ever time we came close to a Golden Generation was like you said, 1966, but again, that was at home and football was different then. Even then, there were better teams. Maybe if we want a Golden Generation, we haven't *actually* had one and we are still waiting for one.

@eisenherz188 So at the beginning the main reason for bringing in young players was basically money! And that`s the problem for England: There is too much money involved in the EPL - And the bigger problem is that it comes basically from "guys" who are not english and do not really have an interest in developing young english players! Their main goal is the sucess of the clubs they invested their money in!

@eisenherz188 Well you should tell the whole story: Indeed Germany didn`t do its homework after the 1990 World Cup and indeed Germany changed its you development system after EURO 2000 - But the big breaking point was the so called "Kirch crisis"! The "Kirch group" was a german media company which had signed a huge TV deal with the Bundesliga - This company went broke and this forced the german clubs to cut costs and bring in their own young players!

They won the world cup 47 years ago! You're saying this like they usually win stuff and they just had a poor game. The current England squad as a team is dung! All the players who play for England don't want to work together. They have a mindset where they think "I'm the best so get out of my way!" They don't work as a team and in future they will be equally as fucked because the FA can't manage to set up a youth system where kids work together and play football

Collectively as a team I agree for the most part but as for some of the individual players in this 2010 squad it's not true. It was kind of a mixed bag. Yes Terry, Cole, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney, and even Milner and Defoe seemed very good, but on the other hand you had Upson, Johnson, Barry, David James, Heskey, Lennon, Wright-Phillips who were not good enough to play for England at big tournaments

  • @VarietyVideoGamer

I'll explain my opinion once and for all. I don't think that England will be "back" anytime soon because the England squad as a team don't play well. I believe that this is because 1) the players are individuals and although many are talented they lack teamwork skills. 2) the youth system in england is corrupted and needs to change. Look at the best teams in the world. They all have a "B" team where youth players get experience. My logic isn't crippled and if I was gay, there would be no problem
