RR7223 UK: NORTHERN IRELAND-TEN WEEKS OF DIRECT RULE
After ten weeks of direct British rule, Northern Ireland
is still in turmoil and the British minister responsible
for the province, William Whitelaw, has had little
encouragement in his search for peace. The main
Catholic party has pledged co-operation, 500 Catholic
internees have been released and Catholic women
have started their own peace movement. But despite
the cease-fire imposed by the offical wing of the IRA,
the provisional wing is still militant and the violence
continues. And there are signs that the Protestants
are losing patience. A right-wing party has been
formed to oppose Mr. Whitelaw and an unofficial
Protestant army has appeared on the streets, threatening
to create its own "No-Go" areas if Mr. Whitelaw
does not clear out the IRA-run Catholic enclaves in
Belfast and Londonderry; they have even talked of
doing the clearing out themselves.
