These are so interesting. I was in the army. I know so little about our sister service. In 1982 I was on South Georgia after the Argentine surrender. We’d sailed on a chartered freighter, St. Helena (superb crew), from Ascension, hit a F11 near Shag Rock and lost most of our perishables. The survey ship HMS Hecate, ‘The Happy Hec’, was diverted to SG to replenish us (Recce Pln, Royql Hampshire Regt). It was weird because there was a Russian spy ‘trawler’ in the area, so we were still on a war footing. We had a fantastic time with the lads from HMS Hecate. It was like a floating supermarket 😊. We had a sod’s opera near the old disused Grytviken whaling station. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much. We all paired off to do a turn on stage. Plenty of beer. I’ll never forget that and was sorry to see ‘The Happy Hec’ départ. Shortly after, the Soviet ‘trawler’ (bristling with antennae), was given permission to come alongside KEP. There must have been some high-level political discussion about that. They weren’t allowed ashore. Three of us (not me) went aboard. A section of us was standby with one-up-the-spout. The Santa Fe sub had been towed out to the other side of the harbour. In my 12 year stint in the British Army infantry I had little occasion to interact with Jack. But South Georgia 1982 more than made up for it. Unforgettable experience. ⚓️ 🗡️.

@Hartley69 Well, I was originally being packed off to HMS Vernon with my oppo to do Sonar, but sadly, at the last minute, they discovered that my hearing was terrible so decided to completely ruin it by sending me off to Cambridge instead. 😅😅😅
