I can't blame tourists for being tourists, it's pretty obvious the horses and guards are there just for the tourists. The heavily armed police officers are the ones who are guarding the place. The guards and horses really serve no other purpose, and if they didn't allow the people close access for photos, the crowds would dwindle... It's all about the money... My guess is, no horse is added to the team unless it's passed the test of being social, allowing people to get close without panic. If you own horses, those horses will get used to you and any ranch hands they see daily, but they will not be comfortable with strangers, I'm sure they've had to work with these horses to keep calm when approached, and only the best are selected for guard duty... I've seen these horses actually lower their head for a child to reach it's nose, saw one cuddle a man in a wheelchair... if the affection is genuine the horse will know and show it's love back...

I'm astounded at the incessant complaining about the tourists, while watching the horses bob their heads because of all the metal in their mouths. Their bits are painful, but nobody cares to remark about their discomfort. Tourists petting them is nothing compared to the pain in their mouths.

@@Fatatua what a load of rubbish! If the Horses were in pain, do you really think they'd bee standing there so calmly? While I agree that some bits can cause pain & discomfort, they are used by the definite Minority of people in the Equine World. People who are professional, like the Army, Professional Eventing Riders, Jockeys & trainers in the Horse Racing Industry, do not use that sort of tack, the reasons for which should be obvious. Not only are there severe penalties by the Governing Bodies of these Industries, there is the fact that these types of Horses are a considerable Investment & you would be foolishly Stupid to mistreat them. Despite everything else, many of these animals have a limited life of service & ability to keep performing at the level required, unless you have the room to retire them & keep them, they are sold on to other Equestrians, they couldn't be if their mouths are damaged. If anything makes the Horses Bob their heads, flatten their ears, kick or bite, it's the idiot Tourist, who have no idea how to behave around them, most of them can't grasp the fact that soft little pats & strokes irritate the Horses, it's like being tickled, they're are 1/4 ton of animal & when they're annoyed, they will fight back the only way they know how. While the Troopers are well trained in handling their Mounts, it still takes them time & if you have a Horse biting your shoulder or arm, you will be hurt before that happens. I wonder how many of these Tourist would go up to a strange Dog to pet it, or encourage their children to, not many I would think.

The title is complete bollocks, the guard on foot only asked that tourist to move to make way for the changeover.Yes he was a bit of a prat with his hand hovering hesitantly in front of the animal's face but that wasn't the reason he got moved on. Horses are instinctively uncomfortable with having their faces touched, some more than others; it's their most vulnerable unprotected spot. Very few of these tourists would have a clue about that. If these tourists have to paw at the horses, at leat stroke or scratch their necks... and don't touch any part of the bridle. Better still, there should be a white boundary line on the ground to keep them out of reach, enforced by someone on the ground.

Keep in mind, the horse is smarter and cleaner than 97% of those tourists. If you think the SAS, the SBS and Royal Marine Commandos have tough jobs, imagine being on display in full parade uniform and being gorped at for hours by ill-bred yokels.

@@phyllbell6769Seriously? They are there only between 11.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. regardless of whether the King is in residence or abroad. They are in impractical Dress uniform and they are armed with a SWORD!! The mounted Guards are removed whenever there is a disturbance in the Street (e.g. a march) and have to call on the Police to deal with tiresome visitors. They have no powers to prevent entry or to search or to arrest. Sorry it's not being disrespectful, - it's just being honest about what Ceremonial duties (for tourist entertainment) involve for these highly trained soldiers.
