Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 - Norman Gets Some New Bags For The Winter Off-Road Season

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hi there,
since the weather hasn't made it possible for me to go for a ride lately, I've decided to share this short video with you. One rare fine evening I managed to fit some new Givi EA100C ( cost is around €125 ) throw-over panniers to Norman.
I decided that I didn't want to bash up Norman'S OEM aluminium cases with any more off-road crashes this winter and also, soft luggage is less likely to damage my legs when I do crash.
These Givi EA100C bags have pretty much the same capacity as the OEM cases at around 40L ( so still useful in a beer emergency ! ) and are significantly cheaper to replace than the aluminium panniers, should that ever be necessary. Some improvisation was required to fit them but I am happy enough with the result, considering the price I paid.
And of course, Ruby now wants to know how many "cubic sossidges" the new panniers will carry.
These things are of course important ( to her ) !
P.S.
I did manage to go for a ride on Buddy at the weekend, so hopefully that should be my next video !
Like many of you, we're struggling a little bit with the weather at the moment.

Hi Jeff ! KZread channels about saddlebags are the best kind of channels, I find. 👍🏻I know of at least two REALLY AWESOME ones 😝 Ruby was very chilled that day. Probably because we hadn't been out in the garden for such a long time, due to the sodding storms. She seemed to be enjoying chilling and catching some rays that evening. Well, until the sossidges came out, of course ! I think these bags are just the ticket for crashing with. I'll get a lot less annoyed every time I crash, knowing that I haven't dinged up those expensive aluminium cases again ! Oh, it was nice to see you on Exmouth's live btw. ( which I managed to catch up with last night ) 👍🏻 Love to you both Jeff, take care Garry & Ruby

Exmouth Rider suspects the same James 😂 No, at nearly 17kg she will need a sidecar unfortunately. Just waiting for RE to bring out a factory sidecar outfit. They really should do it. A reasonably priced RE sidecar outfit would sell pretty well I reckon, because the competition are all crazy expensive. Ruby loves my bikes and she loves the wind in her ears, so I'm sure she'd be in the chair every chance she got, if only we had one 😭 Take care James and keep on spoiling Mrs Ainsworth ! Garry & Ruby

Hi William, I think I paid about €115 for them, possibly slightly reduced during Black Week, I can't remember. I think they can certainly be bought for less that €125 even at full price. For bags of that size in that quality, I think they are a no-brainer. The lack of a few more normal shaped outside pockets might deter some people but I use my QBAG tail pack for the small stuff. The panniers just need to be big gaping spaces for carrying lots of beer and sossidges 😂 So for me, these bags are perfect and I should be doing less visible damage every time I drop the bike off-road. Thanks William, take care 👍🏻 Garry & Ruby

Wouldn't that be nice Lance ! I can but dream. One day maybe. I'm desperate to go on a longer trip with Norman ( Buddy would be up for it but I would like to protect him a bit, just to make sure that he lasts for as long as possible ! ) but my life at the moment doesn't really allow for it. The nearest I get to a holiday is my annual trip to Germany for work. That's it. Hopefully I can have a good year next year and wangle a week off work and maybe do that big trip after all 🤞 Cheers Lance. Love to Leo ❤🐕 Garry and Ruby

Hi Stefan, indeed....there will probably be an extremely scientific test in a future video 😂 The thing is, do I judge the bags to be full when they are actually full or are they full when they are holding the stated maximum of 5kg each ? 5kg is probably only 4x1L bottles. I might have to stretch that a bit. But obviously I don't want the straps letting go or the bottoms falling out ( that would be a terrible waste of beer ! ). So it's going to be a tricky call 🤔 Surprisingly Norman came up like that after just hosing down and drying 🤷‍♂ I didn't make much of an effort to get him clean to be honest, he seemed to come up clean all by himself, which was a nice bonus. Ruby was enjoying being out in the garden because that was the first nice day in absolutely ages. We've had weeks of stormy weather here, with stuff flying through the air and all sorts. So we've been hunkered down indoors most of the time, waiting for it to pass. This was the first calm and sunny day for a while. The next day the wind returned once more 🤬 I did manage to go out for a ride on Sunday ( which again, was one single nice day surrounded by crap days ! ) with Buddy, so we should have that video coming up next week. It was great to ride Buddy again. I really missed him and he's still brilliant ! Cheers Stefan, Garry & Ruby

Thanks Tim, yes, I will be shrinking the bags down to their smaller size next time I go out. I don"t currently need all that space and stuff rattles about more if you have more space than you need 🙂 The new intro music is due to a bizarre copyright claim I received and rather than fight it ( which I could and probably should ), I decided that it would be easier to change the music and have done with it 👍 We don't really have decent weather unfortunately. This was one nice day surrounded by a week of storms either side. It would have been a great day to go for a ride but I had set myself a list of jobs that needed to be sorted that weekend, so unfortunately fitting the new bags to Norman in the early evening was as near as I got to actually riding. Fortunately last Sunday was decent ( been rubbish since though ) and I was able to get out on Buddy at last. That should be next weeks video 🤞 Cheers Tim, thanks for watching 🤗 Garry & Ruby

Hi Andy, yes, they really are great bags for the money. So much capacity, easy to fill and empty and pretty easy to take off the bike and carry away if you park up somewhere a bit dodgy. Very impressed by them and at that price, if I crash a lot and they end up looking too scruffy, I can simply go out and buy a new pair. Really impressed by the quality and practicality of these bags. For once it looks like I lucked into a decent purchase 😂 Cheers Andy 👍🏻 Garry

You can never have too many of them bags. Good decision going soft as you really can stuff plenty more in them than hard ones. Hi Peter, yes, these bags were so cheap that I thought they must be worth a punt. I wasn't sure if they'd fit a Himalayan ( and they don't really ) but I guessed that I would probably be able to make them work somehow. And so it came to pass. So now I have some nice cheap, voluminous, soft bags for occasional off-road whoopsies. I'll be a lot less annoyed about crashing, knowing that I am not scuffing up those lovely aluminum cases every time it happens. Dirty, scuffed Givi bags I can live with. They're only on there for the off-road season after all. I'm thinking that spending just over 100 quid on these bags was probably a shrewd move 🤔 Cheers Peter, love from us two Garry & Ruby

Hi Ice, yes, I think you mentioned that in the chat on the live show, I think I caught that comment, although I missed a ton 😂 Really good bags. Fairly universal fit, thick material, well made, pretty humungous and nice and cheap. Cheap was important to me because if they are on the bike during the off-road season, they ARE going to be hitting the deck from time to time, so I don't see the point in having expensive, posher looking bags on there. These are just the ticket for now ! Cheers buddy 👍🏻 Garry & Ruby

Hi Steve, I managed to watch the live last night and did leave a comment ( well actually THREE but YT decided to delete TWO of them for reasons unknown 🤬 ). Impressive how you kept a live show down to 45 minutes. You must tell me how it's done 😂 Yes. I think these bags were something like €115, possibly with a slight Black Week discount going on at the time. Certainly cheap, bigger than I was expecting and very nice quality. But I was looking for some soft bags to protect my aluminium cases, so I figured at that price I'd make them fit and work for me. I'm really happy with them. They are ideal for what I need and if they get too banged up, I can probably afford to buy another pair later on. I suppose the lack of a couple of normal shaped outside pockets would be a drawback for some but I use my tail pack for that small stuff anyway. So the panniers can just be big cavernous bags to take as much beer ( or sossidges ! ) as possible 😂 Ruby would love to come with me, she loves motorbikes. The trouble is, at nearly 17kg she really needs to ride in a sidecar. Please RE, bring out a factory sidecar outfit, pleeeeease ! 👍🏻🐕 Cheers Steve, much love from the two of us to all of you over there in Exmouth ❤ Garry & Ruby

"Take his drawers out of them.." 😂 I see a risk that they might get held at customs as a potential biohazard Blake 😉 If I were you, I'd just bite the bullet and buy some. Might be less malodorous. You will probably need some pannier racks for them, unless you have some already. Givi do make fitted ones for a lot of bikes but that would have been too much faff for me. I decided that they needed to work with the RE pannier racks, which they sort of do, so it's all good. As usual with this style of bag, you really need something behind them to stop them getting into the wheels etc. because they can flap about a fair bit if not securely tied down to something. These bags only have that bottle pocket at the front, after that just that internal cavernous area. Some people my miss a few side pockets for smaller items but not me, I use my tail pack for the smaller stuff. Beer and sossidge capacity were most important aspects to me and these bags deliver on that. I might have to move the beer to the side a bit to fit in a screwdriver and a hammer. I really shouldn't go out riding in remote areas without an adequate tool kit after all 😇 Cheers Blake. Let us know if you decide to get some 👍🏻🙂 Garry & Ruby
