Lyrics:
Just running scared each place we go so afraid that he might show
Just running scared what would I do if he came back and wanted you
Just running scared feeling low yeah running scared you loved him so
Just running scared afraid to lose if he came back which one would you choose
Then all at once he was standing there so sure of himself his head in the air
My heart was breaking which one would it be
Then you turned around and walked away with me

I saw him only once live in 1987 in New Hampshire. After the show, me and my buddy saw him entering his limo. My brother in law buddy Barry was brave enough to yell Roy and he stopped outside the car. I was too scared, but Barry said this man loves you-how about an autograph. I still have it in my man-cave 25 years later. Roy's voice is not just for Rock and Roll. It is for the ages.

My favorite part is "Then all at once, he was standing there, so sure of himself, his head in the air." I think that line is better than the entire rest of the song, it sounds so pure and dreamlike.

Roy was amazing, but has anyone noticed how good this band is? They would go on to form The Atlanta Rhythm Section and score a couple hits in the 1970's. The transition at 1:25 is so smooth I get goosebumps. Touring does make a band tight, and back then - they'd play 2-3 shows a day. It's hard work (I know - I've done it) and people think musicians have it made - not quite. It's a grind, but hearing a tight combo like this backing that great orbison voice is wonderful! Hard work is worth it.

@@edwardmorris3453 Edward, thanks for your compliment. Lyrics hit the heart whilst the melodies hit the soul. My comment on Roy related to feeling...he wrote and sang many numbers, was a musical poet who was able to resonate with my memories, whichever number and wherever is heard.

According to the producer of this song Roy planned for the last note to be in falsetto. The producer told him that just wouldn't work but Roy was sure he couldn't hit that last note in full voice. Well, they did the cut and, of course, Roy nailed it. He tended to scare producers later because he seemed he had lost it. Instead of rehearsing as most do he just mumbled the lines to himself. He would then nail it on the first take.

Exactly sixty years ago today on June 5th, 1961, "Running Scared" by Roy Orbison peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Top 100 chart... One week earlier, "Running Scared" also peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on the Canadian CHUM Radio Singles chart... Between 1956 and 1992 the Vernon, Texas native had thirty-one records on the Top 100 chart, nine made the Top 10 with two reaching #1, the above "Running Scared" and "Oh, Pretty Woman" for three weeks in September of 1964... He just missed having a third #1 record when his "Crying" peaked at #2 {for 1 week} in October of 1961, for the week it was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "Hit The Road Jack" by Ray Charles... One of his thirty-one charted records was a duet with Emmylou Harris, "That Lovin' You Feelin' Again", it reached #55 in 1980... Two of his thirty-one charted records were as a member of the Traveling Wilburys, "Handle With Care" {at 45 in 1988} and "End of The Line" {at #63 in 1989}... Sadly, Roy Kelton Orbison passed away at the young age of 52 on December 6th, 1988 {a heart attack}... And from the 'For What It's Worth' department, the remainder of Billboard's Top 10 on June 5th, 1961: At #2. "Travelin' Man" by Ricky Nelson {which preceded and then succeeded "Running Scared" at #1} #3. "Daddy's Home" by Shep and the Limelites #4. "Mama Said" by The Shirelles #5. "I Feel So Bad" by Elvis Presley #6. "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King #7. "Moody River" by Pat Boone #8. "A Hundred Pound of Clay" by Gene McDaniels #9. "Raindrops" by Dee Clark #10. "Breakin' In A Brand New Broken Heart" by Connie Francis
