This guy has more talent than all the music artists of today combined. No auto tune, no pro tools, no backing track- nothing. One of the top 5 greatest singers of all time. There is a lot of talent on that stage with him, and they know he is in a whole different league.

In 1963, I saw Roy perform at Vestavia Country Club at a Frat Party after the Auburn/Alabama football game. I couldn’t believe it was him on a party room stage. I was up front. He was unbelievable. No studio enhancements. Just pure Roy. I’ll never forget his expressionless face and the sound that came out of his voice. He stood there, expressionless and hit notes that only most people could dream of. He was unbelievable on a tiny Country Club stage with a third-rate audio system. But, he was great and something I will take to my grave.

A Black & White Night is the greatest Roy Orbison concert there is. I still remember watching it on a series on concerts called "Cinemax Sessions", on the pay channel that also earned the nickname "Skinemax", because of their "Friday After Dark" programming, where they showed a lot of sexploitation flicks. (This was during my formative years, so I watched both.......and I'm NOT ashamed). Actually, the "Cinemax Sessions" were a lot of GREAT shows. I wish someone would release them on video.

The backing band was the TCB Band, which accompanied Elvis Presley from 1969 until his death in 1977: Glen D. Hardin on piano, James Burton on lead guitar, Jerry Scheff on bass, and Ronnie Tutt on drums. Male background vocalists, some of whom also joined in on guitar, were Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and Steven Soles. The female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes and Bonnie Raitt.

Superlative concert...he played & sang every song from his catalog that mattered, he thrilled and transfixed the audience with a golden voice that had not dimmed - not even by one note...! Genius recording methods here. 3-1 spacing between artists and singers. You can't hear the sound bouncing off the walls, playback monitors are not bleeding into the mix. No sound leaking between channels on the mixer. Just fantastic recording. The producer of this recording gets an A+++ as do all the musicians, singers and Roy Orbison.

I remember sitting on my mothers old sofa and listening to this while she was out at work. I'd keep my Nana company and put these songs on for her and she'd tell me story after story about her life. This came on one afternoon. My Nana closed her eyes, smiled and said 'Awww, Roy Orbison' before starting to sway and tap her foot to the rhythm. She started telling me about the time my Grandad took her to see him after work one evening, they stood less than 6ft in front of Roy. Miss you, Nana.

He does a little head shake in disbelief that Roy can still hit those notes all those years later, then the big ol' smile on his face.
