Fun fact: when Roy Orbison came to my hometown on tour, my grandmother was young then and rushed the stage. Security caught her, and instead of kicking her out, Roy Orbison signed an autograph for her and was super nice. She still has the signed picture decades later. Thank you, Roy Orbison, for being nice to my crazy fan girl grandma. ❤️

Even though it was 100+ degrees in Austin, he wore like 6 layers of clothing, finishing with a heavy multi-colored coat. This made him smell pretty bad. I was required to wear a suit, and just looking at his clothes made me sweat more. Overall, he was a more pleasant customer than 90% of celebrities I drove.

Roy Orbison was truly a rare talent. His range was, and is still untouched today. It's rare to have a male vocalist hit such high notes, yet can also do wonders to the low notes. He did it with such force, such power, but the best of all, such clarity that his music will live on for thousands of years unsurpassed. What still amazes me since the first I've heard his music until today is, he did it with ease. It's incredible. His voice is unmatched even today..!!

Maybe it's just me, but other than being a golden night of raw artists, with Roy in the middle, calmly but seriously watching everyone in the band do their thing, it just seemed as though he was a very solid centerpiece with a type of aura that cemented the whole band that night. It's like he was wearing an invisible crown, like a dad watching his children perform and keeping an eye on each one. When Roy joined the Traveling Wilbury's, I think that was a very magic moment for the group to have his talents combined with the other Royalty of music. That was a time when music was serious and involved. I lived through it; I know. Never to be repeated again.

The backing band was the TCB Band, which accompanied Elvis Presley from 1969 until his death in 1977: Glen D. Hardin on piano, James Burton on lead guitar, Jerry Scheff on bass, and Ronnie Tutt on drums. Male background vocalists, some of whom also joined in on guitar, were Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and Steven Soles. The female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes and Bonnie Raitt.

The guitarist who added the most to this performance in his typically unassuming way was the incredibly talented James Burton. He's the one outdueling Bruce. If you know his pedigree, then you know why he is so remarkably talented as a guitarist. The former leader of Elvis Presley's band has played with just about every conceivable major Country & Rock & Roll artist. They all regard him as an icon of the guitar.

Thanks, Jack. How well I know a that. The tragedy that was Ricky Nelson. He was THE teen idol of the 1950's, and should have done much more with his music. He was just a bit too syrupy and "pretty." The country wanted something different and first got the "Bad Boy," Elvis and then The Beatles and then The Stones. Nelson was left dealing with drug addiction and a failed marriage. Burton was simply one if the best lead guitarists of that era and is still respected beyond his prime.

@@michaelnilsson3596 I think he did try and get more edge; in fact some say he was responsible for the beginnings of country rock. Mate, I just turned 60 a few days ago, and I have lost count of how many times I've played this wonderful piece. Wouldn't have it been something if the pair of us were sitting in that venue, listening to the master himself (as well as his starring back-up artistes, no less), drinking in this glorious song? The word "legend" is often loosely bandied about. But you and I know that, when it comes to Roy Orbison, that word defned him completely. Guess what? I'm going to play it again!
