That lead left hook is just ridiculous and almost unfair. The things Roy does in the ring is mind blowing. I guarantee no trainer could duplicate another Roy from style to results. Roy is seriously one of a kind!

Yeah…I think both him and Mike Tyson both don’t get the respect they deserve. People try to downplay there respective legacies. Roy’s ability to punch from just about every angle paired with devastating punching power in both hands and Blistering speed made him nearly impossible to beat…but age and going up to light heavyweights and back down really hurt him and exposed his chin wasn’t as sturdy as we once believed it to be. Mike on the other hand should’ve been the undisputed greatest heavyweight of all time. Middleweight hand speed and head and body movement with God-Like punching power in both hands that struck fear in heart’s of every man on the planet. When he stepped into the ring he left absolute destruction in his wake but when Cus died his destiny died with him. He, ultimately, began his quick rise to fame, fortune, and greatness only to self destruct, with the help from the snakes and leeches the were all around him, inevitably falling much quicker than he rose in the beginning. By the time he came out of prison his power was still there but he was only a shell of the elite next level boxer he was only a half decade or so ago. Tyson haters ( read; racists, fake purists, and history revisionists) want everyone to believe that Mike was a mediocre boxer that relied solely on his punching power alone. But a disciplined Prime Mike Tyson would’ve terrified the heavyweight division and would’ve reigned supreme for over a decade. I miss the 70’s -late 90’s of boxing. We just don’t see the type of fights or boxers that we did back then.

Jones would not have been so dominant against the Real and Legitimate LHW Kings of the 90s , Gracianno Rocchigiani and especially Dariusz Michalczewski , who was the Best , most successful and highly decorated LHW of the 90s and was unbeaten also . Always remember that this fight was a Non Title because neither had any then , not even 1 Strap between them . Jones had vacated his only WBC Strap , to avoid Nunn , Hill , who was the LHW King , had lost his WBA , IBF and Lineal Titles to Michalczewski who was the WBO Champion, a year before this fight . Unfortunately for both Rocky and Dariusz , they had their WBC, IBF and WBA Titles stolen from them in scandalous fashion and weren't even allowed to defend them , opening the door for Jones to beat inferior guys and old timers like Mc Callum, Reggie Johnson, Delvalle and defend them against coppers , binmen , postmen and teachers , and HBO had the gall to say he'd no decent competition , seriously. All the best lads 🥊🥊

@@gregorytravers Just because I'm critical of Roy Jones doesn't mean I hate him , far from it Gregory , actually loved him and was bitterly disappointed to see him getting ripped off in Seoul l in 88 . What must be remembered here is that HBO , Jones employers , said on this very broadcast , Jones was so good he had no Rivals ? What a load of lies and total nonsense and this Virgil Hill he beat was a year on from losing all his Titles to the Best , most successful and only multiple Titles holder and unbeaten , LHW Champion of the 90s , Darius Michalczewski . What about the hate and lies thrown at Darius and Rocky as they had their WBC , WBA and IBF Titles stolen from them and how Jones ducked Rocky numerous times and chose to fight an off duty cop , Ricky Frazer who was 39 and only turned Professional , 7 years earlier ? I'm just an ordinary Boxing fan probably like yourself who's been blessed to see and meet , lots of some of its best operators and was a big Jones fan up until the mid 90s when he was at SMW . It became blatantly obvious to me , he just wasn't prepared to take risks and fight the best around at that time like Eubank , Benn , Liles and Collins . 🥊🥊

Dariusz to this very day , has the record for the longest unbeaten Reign as LHW Champion , 23 defences and was the only Boxer to hold multiple Titles and go unbeaten as a LHW in the 90s , he was the real King of that Division then . 🥊🥊

If you actually observe this fight you can see the spirit draining from Hill 😅 It aint take long for Hill to realize that he got in the ring with something else. He tried to stay focus, but you could see those right leads starting to cause a problem. Roy was just a freak of nature. He could use angles better than anyone. You find yourself being overwhelmed, out of position and caught off guard. He doesnt even have to use a jab. All lightning fast power shots that can take away his opponents will to do anything. Not many can manage that type of weaponry.

How does Jones go 8 months without a fight and the WBC says he's a champion in recess but Jeff Harding with the WBC Light Heavyweight belt went two years without a title fight and was still the champion???

The WBC was a joke , farcical Organisation back then as regards it's LHWs , they declared Jones their Champion twice for beating nobody , gave him the Title for absolutely nothing , free , in 96 after beating Mc Callum , despite him not being Champion , Tiozzo was the Actual Champion , then again in June 98 , handed him a Title that was actually belonged to Rocchigiani , who beat Nunn , March 98 for the vacated Title , after Jones had vacated it some time earlier . Jones has to be the only Guy in the History of Boxing to be declared a Champion twice , despite not beating an existing Champion or winning a Vacation Bout .

@@benrobbo2902 Hi Ben , the reality is that Michael Nunn earned the right to fight Jones for the WBC LHW Title , he also won the TV rights and wanted to fight using a Rival Channel to HBO , who had signed Jones on a Multi fight , Multi Million Dollars contract in 96 , Nunn's Management Team rightly predicted , Jones would duck him and probably Relinquish his Title , which he did , in late 97 . In March 98 , Nunn lost a decision to Rocchigiani for the Vacated Title , yet in June that year , the child Jones , and that's exactly what he was , a spoiled child , comes back , asks for his Title back , and was given it back , it's Embarrassing Ben , there's no other words to describe it . Jones got to duck both Nunn and Rocchigiani that year and nobody batted an eyelid , he would then go on and beat the decent but ordinary Delvalle for his WBA Title in 98 , and the old Reggie Johnson for his IBF Title in 99 , Titles which were stolen from the Best LHW of the 90s , Michalczewski . All the best Ben , take care 🥊🥊

@@benrobbo2902 Exactly Ben , I couldn't agree with you more , it was frustrating as a Boxing fan , not to see him take more risks but who am I to ridicule him realistically . I would have definitely done my utmost to see him fight live in the UK or Ireland V Benn or Collins and may have even traveled to the US if he fought Collins there . It's just my opinion Ben but I think Jones got badly rattled and spooked by what happened to Mc Clellan in his fight with Benn , this came just 3 months after his Toney win , late 94 . For me also , the SMW Division was stronger than the LHW Division at that very time so who knows , as you rightly said it's a pity .

2 takeaways from this fight: 1) Best body shot KO I've seen since Gerry Cooney wrecked Ron Lyle's liver with a left hook in the first round of their match back in 1980. Only way to knock out Hill too, he was built to take headshots like few others in the history of the sport. 2) WHERE WAS HILL'S RIGHT HAND!?!?!? All through that match and I never actually saw him throw one at all. Shoulder problems, maybe? Your guess, folks...

In this fight again, Roy Jones showed that he was a virtuoso, Virgil Hill was still a very good fighter at this point in his career even if he was passed it. In June 1991, Hill ate some big right hands from Tommy Hearns and left hooks to the body. Hill never wobbled. Big George had an appreciation of that shot and so did I. Although most people view it in passing as nothing special. I picked Jones by decision and I did not think he would stop Hill. Jim Lampley made reference to Roy Jones stopping Glenn "Big Bad" Wolfe in 1993. Merchant indicated that Wolfe was not a world class fighter, but he was. He went the distance with James Toney, in a losing effort and then was chosen to face Jones to step up the level of competition for Jones. About a minute into the first round Jones started unloading on Wolfe with lefts and rights to the head. Wolfe was stunned, but not really hurt and had fully recovered by the time Jones landed a brutal left hook to Wolfe's body. Wolfe did not go down, but he turned his back and the referee stopped it immediately. Again, Glenn Wolfe was a tough motherfucker. He was shot in the head multiple times, caught in the crossfire of rival gangs, and after take 2, 3 or 4 bullets to the head he was still able to get up and run and get out of danger. That is a tough man and Jones not only dispatched Wolfe with the one body shot, but he ended Wolfe's career as a professional fighter as he lost a kidney as a result of that body shot. Roy Jones Jr, the best fighter I have ever seen.

I really wish my guy would have boxed Nigel Benn, Tiger Micalchezki, Chris Eubank, or Steve Collins. All were great fighters better than any of Roys opponents through 1995-1998. All this talk about "there wasnt no competition" is a lie. Ive been going through all the old fights from the 90s, and realizing that as a kid I didnt know all those guys were CONSTANTLY trying to get him to box them! Is crazy how the media here in America didnt really mention those guys much.

Brilliant comments there Mr Knuckles and love your insights and honesty , having done some research into that period of time regarding Jones career . I agree with them names except for 1 , Eubank , he openly admitted that he didn't want to fight Jones and was content with his big paydays from British TV Companies , ITV and SKY TV and lacked ambition , to be Undisputed . Theres 3 other Guys that Jones blatantly ducked on numerous occasions , Frankie Liles , Michael Nunn and Gracianno Rocchigiani , who he actually stole his WBC LHW Title from in 98 , with the help of the cheating cowards in the WBC . HBO , who were contractually tied to Jones since 96 and paid the vast amount of his wages , constantly lied for him , proclaiming , he'd no real competition , as you rightly said above , despite the facts he never fought any other SMW Champions like Benn , Liles and Collins , or the Real Champions of the LHWs , Rocchigiani and especially Dariusz Michalczewski , who was the Best , most successful and highly decorated LHW of the 90s and unbeaten here . All the best 🥊🥊

People of today's generation have never seen a Larry Merchant on television, so they don't know what it means to have an independent opinion on something. All they know today is "fluff". Commentators who are "fluffers" will just endlessly kiss the fighter's asses and never say a disparaging word about them.
