I'm impressed by his skills. The 70's had to be music's greatest decade!

I saw Roy 3 times before his suicide. My friends who were really into the blues never even heard of him. So I played the 'Massiah Will Come" to them and it blew them away.To this day, if the blues is about heartache and pain, this is one of the best blues tunes ever recorded. His guitar is literally crying...maybe a portend of what was coming.. Nobody, and mean nobody, felt the pain in his heart like Roy in his peak. His life was cut short, but in my mind, he might have been considered one of the best blues player ever had he lived longer. His live performances were transformational....he was that good.

That suicide is questionable.

Glad you guys reacted to this. More people need to see this piece of history because old Roy's name just always seems to be absent when people start naming guitar gods. You can forget about Steve Hackett and Ed Van Halen being the inventors of tapping. You can forget about all the country chicken pickers. There were guys that worshipped at this man's alter like Johnny Winter, Rory Gallagher, Robbie Robertson and Alvin Lee. The greats knew who this dude was but sadly he's not known by the unwashed masses. Heroes like this are truly hard to find.

Great comment Chaz. I would add Jeff Beck and Gary Moore to the list of significant guitarists who were influenced and touched by Roy.

Roy anytime , but just .... this 35min austin texas session is so amazing , great interaction between band and roy and keyboard player ... yeah sadly not mentioned but i certainlybmake sure i keep his music alive ... RIP Roy and thanks .. for the background music of part my life .. you rock always ..

Merle Haggard Dale Robbins..Lonnie Mack Albert Collins.....he turned the Stones down after Brian Jones left and before they got Mick Taylor He was arrested and beaten by the Fairfax Texas police after his wife called about his drinking. He was walking alone by himself and they just took him in beat him up and a few minutes later he's found hanging off his door bars by his shirt. 1988. Danny Gatton is another of Roy's buddies who was incredible in his own right. While not as great a player as Roy . No the less Danny Gatton was lightening fast . Also was capable of playing with anything a beer bottle spoon piece of wood ...he will blow you away. Roy's has so many great songs get busy guys !!!

ROY! He is a master of making sounds with the guitar with only reverb, the guitar control knobs and his hands. The story you told is kind of urban legend. He was possibly looked at as a replacement when Keith was in drug trouble in the 70's. He died much later (1988) in a Fairfax County jail after arrested for intoxication. They said he hung himself. Guitar players guitar player and a blues and telecaster legend. I hope you get to do more of his stuff. His album Loading zone is great and he has a song called Drowning on Dry Land that is off the chain cool and funny.

agree .. first few records are amazing ... and roy being on road at such a young age alone .. 15 in mid 50s .. he had his demons id say .. which was why the blues flowed thru him .. and very unlikely suicide just when he was at top his game again ...he had everything to live for ...

Thanks for reacting to my great uncle!! Best thing to come out of Ozark lol. He never got the recognition he deserved. He challenged Jimi Hendrix one time but he never took him up

I saw Roy in a small club with about 80 people and that unmatched tone cut right through us- his eyes were on fire and his mouth was a subtle mocking smile as everyone just froze and stared dumbfounded at his power to make us on the verge of tears- he knew he knew no one in the world could match his genius guitar sound and playing.

Much more representative of what he did. I was lucky enough to see him playing in a bar.

Robbie Robertson once said of Roy's guitar playing: 'I think Roy fell out of the cradle playing the guitar like that'.

he mentored robbie when roy was 2 yrs younger .. think roy was about late15s,was only for a month or two .. theres abit about roys early years with ronnie and the hawks etc in robbie auto biography TESTIMONY ..

Yeah - he was so special. I felt later in his life he got harsher, louder, and possibly depressed from overuse of alcohol. I suspect that his death was partially the result of being so long on the road, so much booze, and depression, though I don't know for sure - who ever can really know.

A genius in real lifetime, I saw this on Austin city limits in Vicksburg Mississippi when I was a kid and I’ve never been the same

I do believe that is Roy's 1953 telecaster named Nancy. Brought it from a guy he saw carrying it down the street in 1969. The B3 ain't bad either. Nice selection Paul. "Saw him doing his taxes" 🤣

Roy was just cool. Grew up in the 70s and he had a 3 CD live album that I played ad infinitum for a year.

Roy could play mean fucking blues!

Roy Buchanan was a musician's musicians. Much like Warren Zevon and Randy Newman, they may never made it to mainstream popularity but their skill and passion was appreciated by other artists. These are the types of performers that if you looked at the side of the stage you would see famous stars in amazement.

I'm glad your second reaction was to a live performance, you needed to see him for yourself.

Secret monster of the telecaster

SECOND ALBUM is my best piece of music, and he did three great albums in the 80's.

Roy was another "guitarists' guitarist" I saw numerous times in the early mid-70s. Tragic end. First thing I heard was 'The Messiah Will Come Again' on the radio late one night. Another impactful track also first heard on the airwaves was his version of Patsy Cline's 'Sweet Dreams'.

It was my 11th birthday. I wish I had been there. Get around to checking out Danny Gatton, another D.C. Telemaster largely unknown to the general public, but idolized by the big star players: IMO the greatest guitarist who ever lived. He was a friend/rival of Roy's - and he too tragically committed suicide.

Roy had been on the road since 1956 - 20 years by 1976. He was pretty much a veteran master at this point.

Roy was my uncle and he was asked to play for the Rolling Stones many years before he was found hung in his jail cell in 1988.

one of the GREATEST 35 minutes of an emotional rollercoaster ride you will ever hear... mindblowing heavenly ... he wanted to make music not obtain fame ... a humble genuis and a massive loss just like SRV .. both around the same few yrs .. i thank GOD i got to see them both ... being old has its bonuses ... seeing great music was one of them ..

Had the great good fortune to see Mr. Roy Buchanan on two occasions, once in a small auditorium on my college campus in New Hampshire, and teh other wsa in front of about 30,000 at the State Fairgrounds in Lewiston, Maine, opening for the Grateful Dead. He was absolutely amazing, and totally dedicated to what he was doing. One thing to notice about Roy, he uses NO pedals or other effects, he does it ALL with his fingers and techniques. And the way he's grinding his teeth, I think a little white powder up his nose. A true "Master of the Telecaster". How you guys doing?

You guys gotta check out Roy in NY city live Town Hall 1974. Also.....Germany 1985 live. He's the leader of the pack Greatest most soulful deepest mournful guitar bends you'll ever hear. There's Roy Buchanan and then.... everyone else. For me it's. Roy Buchanan Frank Zappa. Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. Hendrix is tied at third. Then it's Dicky Betts. Duane Allman. Eric Clapton. Buddy Guy and Albert Collins are in a category all by themselves

How can people have a very basic reaction to Roy Buchanan when I first heard him my eyes were popped out the whole time with my mouth has the wow shape. I would give anything to hear Roy Buchanan the first time again

Thanks to Dan and Sifa for letting me change my selection. After last weeks reaction to Roy, I thought this would put a cherry on top, seeing what he can really do. Not a guitarist but wasn't some of that, especially at the end called "chickin' pickin'? He was tremendous. With reference to what Sifa said about Van Halen, Roy was playing like this at least a decade before this (1976). Notice no pedals or stuff. To use a bit of an analogy, it's like an early Rafa Nadal serving. He was terrible and was just about getting the ball into play...then his work began!!! Some of the songs Roy played weren't the best, like Dan said, but his presence made the difference. Love how his chin waggles when he's concentrating, lol. Did you see Princess Diana in the audience?...I thought she looked like her, lol. Great reaction Dan and Sifa, thank you.

Aha! When I saw "Roy's Bluz" in the Weekly Reactions List I just knew it had to be your request Paul. Had your fingerprints all over it. Ha ha! Great pick buddy. Roy Buchanan aka Master of the Telecaster aka The Greatest Unknown Guitar Player in the World. One of my all time faves. He made his home in the DC area for quite a few years and was a local legend, especially amongst other guitar players. So I got to see him live a few times over those years. Just an incredible talent who made it seem effortless (Sifa cracked me up with her impressions while he took a drink). His "suicide" is a scandal to this day in the DC area. Tragic loss. Grew up in the 70s never heard of him. Crap, this was good too, what a technique. Maybe the gods were being kind and not letting me watch this till now, so I wouldn't give up. Wonderful.

go look up PBS early 70s tv special called " the worlds greatest unknow guitar player " .... think its still up .. a 4 part doco .. and theres a few others too..my vids of roy have it or one of the blues or concerts lists .. this concert intexas was 35min and a gem .. well worth watching whole 35min.. so lucky it was recorded ..

He didn't commit suicide and turning down the Stones happened a long time before his death. Nonetheless, Buchanan was one of the greatest to ever do it. Thanks for the reaction.

u know 100 % he did hang himself when he was at the top of his game again .. he had been having run ins with the police dept there for a while .. think you should do more research and witness reading before youmake statements that you say /think are 100% fact ...

And all without guitar pedals!

Yes indeed! Another favorite son of DC's and another Master of the Telecaster is Danny Gatton (aka The Humbler). Sadly, both died tragically before their time and both are sorely missed.

Roy was I think a musical genius and why he was tormented by those horrible Demons I will never understand. RIP Telemaster Roy. What a shame how it ended.

Of course his guitar playing is amazing. But we don't know the credibility of any of the stories. Likely Roy made up many of them. I can't see how he would have fit in with the Stones musically, personality wise, stylistically or in stage appearance. The Stone's John Entwhistle? Ronnie Wood was Keith Richard's friend and has been in the Stones since 1975! Prior to Wood the Stones had Mick Taylor. Roy died in 1988. Does anyone think after Taylor left Roy would have been considered for the Stones over Wood?

Guitar's name was "Nancy."
