Today for the first time on the channel, we are checking out Roy Buchanan! This is a live version of Roy's Bluz from 1976 in Austin, Tx. He was an absolute monster on the instrument and blew me away! Oh wow, that’s so cool!
I started listening to, seeing, and trying to play like Roy in 1977. I saw him approx 10 times, and even met him once very briefly (we shared a little chuckle at the expense of our mutual friend). I love and high!y recommend Second Album, Livestock, and That's what I'm here for. It's important to remember that he is playing his Tele straight into his Fender amp - no effects. So basically, he invented sounds and licks and became the guitarist that everyone had to go see in the early to mid 60's. I feel like he was the Van Halen of his day and after seeing him, players loosened up and let the new sounds flow. Beck, Hendrix, Robertson, etc. all went to see Roy early on in their careers.

Appreciate the suggestion and I loved the video! He is such an amazing and unique talent! Thanks for swinging by the channel!
My late husband's favourite guitar player. Saw him on the Pittsburgh PBS station as a kid and picked up the guitar the next day and didn't put it down till the day he died. So, so glad to see him here, and to hear that others are not letting his music die. Very well done, young man. RIP Buchanan. RIP SBZ.

So good! 🤯
There was one comment I read that came from Les Paul back then. He compared Roy with Jimi Hendrix by saying they were similar in talent and sounds but heard Roy doing them first.

Yeah, same here. It was back in 1977 at Alex Cooly’s Electric Ballroom. Found out the next morning reading the Sunday paper that Doc and Merle Watson were playing in a joint a couple blocks away and had a guest sit in named Richard Betts.
Check outthe incredible guitar of Danny Gatton solo and with Buddy Emmons (Redneck Jazz Explosion) Songs: Nitpickin', Comin' Home Baby, Fingers on Fire, Rock Candy, Harlem Nocturne and Nocto Blues are some of my favourites.

@@setonhillstudios I'd say Danny is comparably mind-blowing with Roy. Both phenoms of a different era. Masters of their instruments.
The first concert I saw was Roy Buchanan in pittsburgh

Super cool! Great artist to see for your first concert!
P.S. Your musical insight is most welcome as well. "He talks while the guitar sings." Brilliant! And not everyone would notice how bright he plays. You hear the similarities between he and Gary Moore. Great stuff!

100%
saw Roy in the mid-80's here in Oz. He played his set. Typical Roy stuff. One of the great nights and concerts. About 2 hours. When he saw how loved he was he came back out and played a 90minute encore of his favourite Hendrix songs. Yep.

@@setonhillstudios he played for nearly four hours just like the first time we saw George Thorogood & The Destroyers in the late 70's. These artists loved the reaction they received and just kept playing. How memorable for us and them I suppose. Better live than ever on record.

One of the greatest guitarists you've never heard of. His hybrid picking is next world and rare to see outside of Country or Bluegrass picking.

Lot of recommendations for that one, I’ll have to check it out for sure!
It's an absolute shame that his name is not more well known. Like as well known as Hendrix
No pedals, straight into the amp, all fingers, feel and technic, the first to really master the volume swell crying technic amazing guitarist!

Does a great cover of Hey Joe, Down by the River, The Mesiah Will Come Again is his signature piece, he was the son of a preacher with constant substance issues, a true tortured soul unfortunately found hanging in a drunk tank 30ish years ago.
