Saw Rory in 73 opening up for Deep Purple when they were peaking . he blew the roof off the place and after his set he did an encore and we were standing on our chairs screaming for another encore which he did but we wanted more..Rory made it very difficult for Deep Purple that night to come on after him.

You guys are masters of the understatement, Rory Gallagher 'quite talented'. Imo he's one of the best guitar players ever. no pedals or effects, all the sound coming from his fingers. You should check out some of Rory's acoustic stuff. The host of The Old Grey Whistle Test had the nickname of 'Whispering' Bob Harris. Speaking of Lefties, Elizabeth Cotton was left handed, who played her guitar left handed, but strung right handed. Perhaps check her out too, One of her better known songs was Freight Train. Doyle Bramhall plays a left handed guitar, but strung as a right handed guitar. I really enjoy your reactions. You seem to cover bands and songs other reacters don't. Keep up the good work guys.

Thank you for doing this, Chris and Cynthia, Rory was an excellent artist R.I.P. As for the last name pronunciation it all depends if it's Gaelic or English, if the name is of a English person it's pronounced as you would do in Canada, but if they're from Ireland or Scotland the other pronunciation is used, confusing I know. The presenter of 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' is 'Whispering' Bob Harris, he started out as a DJ on Radio in the '60s.

@JamesDickson-vs5of You've got that story a bit mixed up there, the original owner of Rory's strat was Jim Conlon of the Royal Showband in Ireland. He used it for about a year, but wanted a red one LIKE Hank Marvin's, which he ordered from Crowley's music shop and when it came in, he traded in the sunburst one for it, which Rory then bought and paid for in weekly instalments, with his mum as guarantor. £100 was a LOT of money in 1963 especially for a 15 year old schoolboy! Absolutely nothing to do with Cliff Richard!

The problem with Rory for me, and it's not unique to him, is that, as brilliant as he is as a guitar player, there's a limit to how many iterations of the blues I can listen to before I want to hear something else. Rory seemed to ne comfortable in his niche, but it would have been nice to hear what he could have done in the context of a more musically ambitious band. It's not as though the opportunity wasn't there.

@@wildapplellamas7751 It's not meant to be a reflection on the band. They are good players following Rory's musical direction. And it's interesting to me if musicians try diverse styles, even if it doesn't always work out very well. The obvious parallel with Rory is Gary Moore. You could argue about who was the better guitar player, but there's no doubt who had the more wide-ranging career.
