Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry looks back on the band's legacy and influence on rock 'n' roll

Formed in Britain in 1970, the band Roxy Music was highly influential in the rock world. They added avant-garde elements of fashion and art to their performances, paving the way for bands such as U2, the Talking Heads and Duran Duran. Before a special reunion performance to celebrate the band's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, "CBS This Morning: Saturday" co-host Anthony Mason sat down with lead singer Bryan Ferry to talk about the band's legacy.

    FINALLY!!!!!!!! The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame got a CLASS act!! They should have been in there YEARS ago. HUGELY influential and ahead of the game. I'm glad to have been a fan since 1972 and followed them and all the members since then. No one sounded like them during that time and they stood out. So clever, so forward looking, so smart, so elan, so decadent, so.. CHIC ( hello Nile Rodgers!!!). Some of the best concerts I have ever been to or seen were from Roxy and Bryan Ferry. Bryan is SOOO cool. He is my style icon. He is also a NICE guy to boot. I just WISHED that Eno would have showed up last night. It would have been so sublime. Oh well.. at least they are finally in. This fan is VERY happy. Peace

    Bryan Ferry and Roxy was and remains one of THE influential bands that arose in the '70s. The Beatles ruled the 60's without any doubt, but leading into the 70's one band that had that power to influence generations after really wasn't possible, so the top bands of that time was actually incredible. Think about it, Roxy Music of course, but also Bowie, Elton John, The Sex Pistols, T-Rex, Velvet Underground and Led Zeppelin. It's these bands that continue to influence the music of today. I was born in '71 and I'm extremely thankful to have grown up in the game changing era that was the '70s. Thank you to every musician from then and the 80's. Amazing music being released every week and I was right in the middle of it. Thank you.

I'd add to your list Rory Gallagher, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Bad Company. And to think I used to see these bands every week and think nothing of it.

    The Rock and Roll HOF isn't what bestows legitimacy on a band like Roxy Music but what it CAN do is draw attention to their music and legacy to the larger public. I had a general awareness of Roxy Music as an early pioneering art rock band in the 1970s and I was certainly aware of Brian Eno's work with David Bowie and U2 among others but coming across this band since their induction I've taken a deeper dive into their catalog and really have gotten into them lately. @So Angry I was definitely there. There were some good groups to emerge in the 70's but I don't think "dripping" best describes the introduction of new talent for that decade. The topic of "good music" obviously comes down to the type(s) of music that appeals to the individual and I respect that. I do agree that EWF and BOC represent some of the best talent to surface in the 70's or any decade for that matter.

    @So Angry I never said "I couldn't find anything" in the emergance of 70's music. I said there were a few bright spots. There were super groups that would emerge but the field was cluttered with a tremendous amount of junk, just my opinion.

  • @mightylonesome9426

    @mightylonesome9426

    @So Angry 70's music was simply a derivative of what had passed before. The differece was the recording industries insatiable appetite to fill the airways with easily produced dance music that yielded high financial return. If you ask people what musical genre best defines the 70's, sadly, most will reply "Disco". I'm not suggesting that the talent wasn't there, it was. I'm saying that the number of great artitist to emerge during the 70's was in decline due to the cookie cutter noise pushed by the industry, thus my "few bright spots" comment. There was talent that defied the odds and managed to rise above the clamor because they were just too good to ignore.

    "Treasure so rare, even devils might care." Roxy Music in a nutshell. From Beauty Queen, the album For Your Pleasure. My favorite Roxy Music lyrics from my favorite Roxy Music album. I've known them by heart since they were burned in 46 years ago. Valerie, please believe It never could work out The time to make plans Has passed Faded away Ooh, the way you look Makes my starry eyes shiver Then I look away Too much for one day One thing we share Is an ideal of beauty Treasure so rare That even devils might care Your swimming pool eyes In sea breezes they flutter The coconut tears Heavy-lidded they shed Swaying palms at your feet You're the pride of your street While you worship the sun Summer lover of fun Gold number with neighbours Who said that you'll go far Maybe someday be a star A fast-mover like you And your dreams will all come true All of my hope and my inspiration I drew from you Our life's pattern's drawn in sand But the winds could not erase The memory of your face Deep in the night Plying very strange cargo Our soul ships pass by Solo trips to the stars In the sky Gliding so far That the eye cannot follow Where do they go We'll never know
