The differences between the 4.0 and 4.6 bottom end are, The crankshaft as you said has a longer throw. The conrod on the 4.6 is shorter. Quick way to tell is 4.0 2 dimples, 4.6 1 dimple. The pistons on the 4.6 have a smaller dish to retain the 9.35:1 compression ratio. You can use the 4.0 pistons in a 4.6 to raise the compression ratio to 9.75 (ish).

I've got a 2003 Rover disco with a 4.6 at 138k runs great so far... I really hope I don't have to get a new engine because the cost is way above my budget and it would be unfortunate because I love my disco even being a broke college kid....

Thanks for posting this video, very informative. Did you get the engine installed and the truck running?

Wow, was really looking forward to seeing the 4.6l block back from the machine shop. was the block bad? how much for all the work etc... as I too have a discovery with slipped sleeve. best of luck with the new motor.

The 4.6L rebuild plan was going just fine, and the block is okay. The machine shop, however, was really backed up with work and when I found the 4.0 short blocks on eBay it was a no-brainer to just work with those and save the 4.6 rebuild for another time. I'll probably get to that next year after I'm able to sell my two Discos with the P38 4.0L engines.

Do you anticipate the slip liner problem on this 4.0 engine later? Can you do anything to prevent it from happening?

I do not anticipate any problems with the factory liners. Front cover alignment is perfect and I'm running a 180 degree thermostat so the possibility of overheating is virtually non-existent. The engine has about 25K miles on it now and is running perfectly.

Hoping/waiting for followup on 4.6, I have two to work. Further, adapting them to light automobile with Buick accessories, so any info. of shops, sources here in US would be great. 4.0 Still going well?

The 4.0 is doing great with about 40K miles on it now.

So what's the average cost?
did you end up selling the other 4.0 engine?
