Roundhay Garden Scene Enhanced Using Free Software

This film is the Roundhay Garden Scene, shot in 1888 by Louis Le Prince. It is believed to be the oldest surviving motion picture.

Gimp
www.gimp.org/
Free alternative to Photoshop. I used this for cropping, rotating, and repairing damaged part of the images as well as adjusting color and light and dark levels.
Darktable
www.darktable....
Free alternative to Lightroom. I used this for enhancing the color of a single frame, the one of the composite background without the characters. This can also be done in Gimp.
Waifu2x-caffe
github.com/nag...
github.com/llt...
Free software converting low-res images into high-res, also known as up-scaling. At its core is the open source project Waifu2x. The software I used is a binary compiled specifically for Windows, called Waifu2x-caffe.
DAIN-App
grisk.itch.io/...
github.com/bao...
Free video interpolation software, add additional frames where there are non. This is also an open source software called DAIN, but has been made into an app for Windows called Dain-app.
Deoldify
deoldify.ai/
github.com/jan...
Free Video Editing Software
Since this project involved a very short video/movie/motion picture, video editing software was used very little. Most of the editing was done on the individual frames and the heavy lifting was done with the help of AI from Waifu2x, DAIN, and Deoldify. The video editor was use to convert the images into a file, and also to do some basic masking to overlay a video over top of an image. Here are some good, free, open source videos to check out. I used all while playing around with this project, but could have used any one of them to achieve the end result.

Amazing! I'd love to know exactly where that house is so I can compare the video with it today (I know it's Oakwood Grange, Roundhay, Leeds, but looks like it may now just be modern houses there). I found Joseph and Sarah on the 1881 census living at Oakley Cottage - wherever that is, if it still exists.

Fantastic work, Ryndon! 😁 And really great video! It was real interesting seeing your whole process and how it was all possible of FOSS programs! One question: When you exported the video out of Shotcut, Kdenlive and Olive did you use the lossless preset HuffYUV? That way there was no quality loss when going from render to render. By the way, do you think you can make tutorials for Waifu2x and DAIN?

  • @TJFREE

    @TJFREE

    4 жыл бұрын

Thanks! I did try to always export the images and video in Lossless. I ended up doing this complete project from the start 3 times, and did it different each time. I'm pretty sure I could get the same end results without even using a video editor, just ffmpeg and gimp (and the AI tools)! Yes, I have tutorials already made for the AI software and they will come out over the next few days. Also, I watched your latest Shotcut video, very cool!

When I mention about FOSS or some alternatives to the "industry standard" softwares, people look at me like I'm an alien and say "but, it's an industry standard. So, that's what you should buy". I try to explain them going for an "industry standard" which is basically at a second hand car price is no different than buying a Ferrari for going to shopping. They still don't understand and insist that I limit myself with alternative or open source software. Next time, I won't argue with those people, I'll just direct them this video..

Great!! Fantastic time we're living in) I wonder would it improve the overall result if you colored those 8 frames individually and then multiply them? That automatic frame coloring looked really on point, yet the video processing is still lacking consistency because of the task complexity, but there were only 8, to begin with here, so yeah, could it benefit from such a change of the enhancement actions' order? Thank you!

Good question. You can do this in any video editor. Bring in the 60 fps video and the old 30 fps video. Split the audio from the 30 fps video, and remove the video part only, keeping only the audio and the new 60 fps video. Alight the tracks. If the audio is out of sync, increase or decease the speed of the audio clip..
