Rotation Drills to STOP the Hips Sliding in the Golf Swing

Спорт

If we're too conscious of not sliding our hips in the golf swing; that can in fact render us unable to move in a way we need to (ironically) to stop our hips from sliding!
Here we have a couple exercises to familiarise yourself with side bend and the lateral component of the movement, so we can drop our low point, lower into the ground, then use the vertical component of the swing to get that snap.

What a golf lesson. You could take these move’s to the dance floor. So, so natural. Rhythm and blues baby, rhythm and blues!

Thank you very much for this Marcus!! Not sure if it was in response to my comment yesterday, but if it was in some way, it’s massively appreciated!! I’ll work on it and hopefully my right pelvis will finally thank me!!

I had just finished the front 9 when this video came out. Shot a 53 on the front, then shot a 43 on the back 9. Imagine how well the back 9 would have been if I could have actually watched the video

Love the videos! I was curious if you were familiar with Edward Jones and his methods. He was a proponent of “finding the swing”, forsaking the technical approach to mechanics. I wish I was in a position to fly over the pond and take a couple days instruction. Do you have any connections with similar coaches in the mid-Atlantic or southeastern US?

After playing golf for 66 years I've at last discovered through your videos how I should have been taught how to move my body in my golf swing. Can I suggest that you create a video to teach your methodology to young kids, thereby getting them on the right track from the get go and avoid them having to wait 66 years to find 'the secret'. For instance over the years I've noticed that very many of them start with a 4 knuckle grip in their leading hand and as they get older they have great difficulty in transitioning to a less aggressive grip.

Could you please do a SLOW MOTION demostration of the combined and complete shift, side bend and rotation motions, and show how the head appears to stay relatively still? Couldn't quite follow the rotation bit because you skipped through it so fast. Thank you.

Finally undestood this video (I think) after watching it for the 3rd time and moving together with you. 'Sway then rotate' has been killing my left hip for years. Why didn't you tell us this 30 years ago? : ) Thank you so very much.

At 4:18 you illustrate the transfer of weight shifting from right to left, accordingly. How do you accomplish this without so much head movement? It appears easy when you illustrate it this way, but when you need to keep your head relatively stable during the swing, it is difficult, if not impossible, to get that much weight transfer as you so illustrate.

I think there is an element of head movement to get in front of the ball to make consistent solid contact to get the divot in front of the ball. I think Marcus is exaggerating the movements conceptually. If I'm wrong some will accurately respond.

Here is a question for you. Why do we need to move right on the backswing? You don't need to move right in the backswing. The second point is how we get the arms down before we move the low point down, forward, and up. Don't listen to anyone who tells you, just let the arms fall. That line has been proven wrong. The hands need to move faster as they have longer to travel. All amature golfers rotate their bodies too early, move back on the downswing, push the club outwards, and never get the low point down and forward. When you move forward to the target with your upper body closed the hands have room to pull the club down and narrow the radius, this is what moves the handle of the club laterally and produces lag. I repeat. You don't need to move your weight to the right. In fact, if I were coaching you, you would never move your weight right. You would always have your low point down and forward, pressure into the ground ready to push up, or what Mr. Bell would say pop up. You would be doing all the things Mr. Bell is teaching. It's just basic physics. Equal and opposing forces. You just need to find a coach who can explain it and give you the correct drills to tap into the forces. Hope this helped. Have a nice day.

At 2:20 where you illustrate the backswing utilizing left side bend, isn't your weight on the left leg and not the right where it should be? That's where I feel my weight is at the top of the backswing if I simulate your instruction. Then, how do you get the proper weight shift to the right leg during the backswing and simultaneously incorporating left side bend??????? Conversely, on the weight transfer to the left side on the downswing, the transfer actually never occurred because the weight was already established on the left leg during the backswing. Yikes! I don't get it. Are you saying the transfer of weight is an illusion?

Irons and 5 wood...no problem. Been hitting them pretty good. But I cannot stop "swaying" the hips with my driver causing the big block to the right. Drives me NUTS! I have A LOT of work with the driver.

I hope you don't mind me saying this? Stop watching KZread videos of coaches who have no idea what they're talking about. Every day I get students asking me to comment on KZread coaches. I just tell them what I am telling you below. Golf is difficult to learn, and even more difficult when you watch 20 different swing tips on KZread. There is a reason I don't go on KZread? I guarantee you moving off the ball and not applying physics? Read below. Show your coach. If he is dismissive of what I have told you, find another coach ASAP. If he inquisitive stay with him. Ask if he understands how to apply it to your game. I wish you all the best. "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction" Sir Isaac Newton, the lumberjack, hammer & discus thrower moved their body in the opposite direction to the swing to use Centripetal and centrifugal force. The heavier the object becomes the more they have to counterbalance their body to achieve maximum acceleration!! I believe if you shift your weight forward enough on your backswing to get the low point in front of the ball you won't need any lateral movement on the downswing because your weight is on the front foot already!! all you do now is fire the hips and as the club swings forward your weight will move back a little bit helping the hips clear counterbalancing and using Centripetal and centrifugal force to create speed, propelling your arms and club and squaring the clubface at the same time!! The momentum from the swing will then pull you back onto your front foot to finish the swing. I'm not saying your low point moves behind the ball because you will fat or thin it, but if you get it far enough in front of the ball to start with it won't be too long before you figure out and feel the perfect position. This is a more predictable way to swing as opposed to shifting weight from right to left. I see amateurs shifting to the right and staying there on the downswing fatting and thining the ball and I see good players shifting to the right and sliding to the left to try and get back to the ball, quite often getting too far ahead of the ball leading to overuse of the hands at impact and bad backs!! Shifting weight from the back foot to the front foot requires a lot of strength to get the club moving but the strike can be very inconsistent. Moving the weight to the front and then allowing it to naturally move back a little when your body counterbalances is more efficient and easier on the body as physics is on your side!! I fell into the trap of shifting my weight onto my right side whilst keeping my right knee flexed resisting my hip turn as we were all told to do in the 90s!! Now I have rediscovered my swing from my days of quality ball striking doing the complete opposite ;-)

Am I the first to tell you your walking was wrong, left leg left arm moved forward the the opposite side moved. Walking naturally is opposing appendages move forward. Hopping from leg to leg then swing is a good drill. Chest rotation and not sway is slightly more difficult.
