Thank you so much for this. I studied her work and Norman Lindsay's in art college. Its so good to see Rosaleen gain the respect that she deserves. She was a pioneer of street art in Sydney.

There is a great documentary called "Witch of Kings Cross" about her.

Oh man! I was spinning out trying to tnink where I know her from. SHE IS FAMOUS in my City/Country if you are into the Esoteric. The media usually sensationalized what she did. A very conservative country and media found their own "Crowley" to milk for readership. But she was the real deal. Bless You. You will have my eternal gratitude for giving this Lady her fair due with a truly well researched and informative video.

I'm an Aussie and old enough to remember talk of Norton popping up periodically in the esoteric and folklore communities. Each time she was understood differently to the previous time. Theres a few books published about her but all are out of print now, i believe. This vid is one of the most nuanced and complete examinations of the life and work ive seen. It’s always great to meet another Witch! I also venerate Pan as All-Father, and Hecate is my Patroness. Many of Norton’s other beliefs and practices resonate with mine, as well. Thank you for introducing her to us!

I learnt more about her from this than in all the years of media commentary. I was 30 when she died and lived in the Cross in the early 80s. There were many fascinating characters in Sydney over the decades.

I remember watching a documentary about Rosaleen Norton and everything about her fascinated and inspired me on my own spiritual path (though I should mention that I'm not entirely sure how accurate it was, since they leaned hard into the more sensationalized view of Norton). I agree, Rosaleen was way ahead of her time. I have my own "pantheon" of women magicians who inspired me, and Rosaleen Norton is definitely in there alongside Marie Leveau, Marjorie Cameron, Maude Gonne, Florence Farr, Annie Horniman, Moira Mathers, Pamela "Pixie" Smith and many others. Amazing video! I'm always eager for the next one!

I'm glad you made a video about R. Norton. Until now I was unaware of her existence, and now I find her utterly fascinating. I'm especially intrigued by the intersection of her magical practice with her art and her perception of Pan as being androgynous. Oh, and her interest in a Basque god also piques my interest because I find myself curious about traditional, pre-Christian Basque beliefs. Great video, Angela! 😊

I don't know about comparing Dragon Rouge with Aliester Crowley or Norton. I've never seen Crowley or Norton have to put on a ski mask and wield a gun around to try and make themselves look powerful. Not that Crowley didn't hunt...he did. But he sure didn't put out photos of himself wielding his firearm as some kind of image he wanted the world to connect with his name. All he needed was his stare to be powerful.

wow, I've never heard of her yet I'm from New Zealand, we're such a small country we usually talk about our heroes lots! I'll be sure to read that book. Interesting she found a home in Kings Cross, Sydney, which is to this day the home of drugs, crime and prostitution, but also a more open attitude to differences than the average society. Yes Aussie and NZ were Very Conservative back in the 50's, 60's, 70's.... lol now? 😛

Does anyone know what became of her artwork? Has it ever traveled or been featured in an exhibition?

All this trance stuff begs the question: when did self-induced trance states become "legitimate" (as legitimate as anything is or can be in something as individualistic as this) in Western Esotericism? We're pretty sure they were a thing before written history but self-induced and self-assessed trances seem to be an entirely separate beast, enabling a whole host of ad-hoc mythologies which were conjured to give name to the feelings and experiences evoked by said trance.

Well, auto-suggestion during hypnogogic states is one of the psychopath's super powers. I.e. before you make other people believe the shit you just made up, you got to make yourself believe in it first. And psychopaths have been a part of human culture forever. Shamans (shamen?) have been accessing trance states continuously for probably tens of thousands of years... at least 10 thousand. Monks of all gowns have accessed trance states for thousands of years, and still do. When I was a kid, my grandma had a "self help" book from the 1950s that was all about programming yourself by taking advantage of the half-awake/half-asleep state of mind. It even had a very American way to make sigils using English language acronyms! This was a trade paperback inspired by slightly less hokey books from 30-50 years before that. There was parapsychology research happening around that time. In the previous period, there were seances, theosophy, orientalism... There were witches and herbalists before that. There was more mystery, and less practical knowledge. But someone from a couple thousand years ago might think everyone today is in a trance all the time. Have you ever been on an elevator with a bunch of people who don't know each other? Sure looks like they're in a collective trance! Same thing at a movie theater. At a live tennis match, the ball might as well be a swaying pocket watch, back and forth, "You are getting verrrrry sleeeeeepy..."

I agree with her polytheistic view , but that she calls “Pan” I call “Creation” or “Universal Consciousness” because Pan is also a demon called Pan in sncient times and now Azazel or Paimon. I wish we would just call the "astral plane" as imagination. The person is entering the same location as the dream state. To call it the astral plane is really inflating what it is. Its imagination but with the person's hands off the steering wheel. As I am typing this I am realizing there are three states. Pure lucid imagination, lucid dream state imagination where the person has some control and pure dream state with all these accessed outside of sleep.
