Rooms: Mrs Beale (1977)

This episode is from early on in series two of Rooms and marked the first episode that introduced Ruth to Brian (played by actors Jill Gascoine and William Marlowe) both of whom would later team up again in 1980 and star opposite each other in the hugely successful police drama The Gentle Touch. This episode of Rooms was first broadcast on the 11th January, 1977.
Mrs Beale (Anne Dyson) continues repeating her poisonous remarks about Linda Todd's (Diana Berriman) loose morals with neighbour Brian Kettle (William Marlowe) but he finds out from more than one source that Linda really is leaving to get married. When new landlord Mr Singer (Michael Lees) pays Mrs Beale a visit she turns her malicious tongue on separated tenant Mrs Harris (Jill Gascoine) implying that having single female tenants could give the place a bad name.

Reminds me of all the rooms I lived in, all the tenant's and their different personalities. Excuses for the Landlord when I'd foolishly spent the rent. I live alone now and I like the peace.

Thank you for commenting. I am constantly surprised by just how many comments mention the similarities of the set to their residence from the same decade. It says to me they had great production designers on the series.

Was Mrs. Beale just reflecting the values of her generation, or was it just a front for her envy of Linda and Ruth? At that time, obviously there were different attitudes towards single women. Jill Gascoine always looked incredibly attractive, even in this unglamourous role.
when i look back now a lot of the acting seemed so stiff and not much happened per episode but i never noticed it way back then...thanks
