This song was written by Phillip Coleman about the closure of the OLDEST North American Goodyear Tire Plant in Union City Tn. Im from near there and my husband put in 26 years, 6 days a week for the most part. The closure was a surprise in some ways and a given in others. Little Union City has about 13,000 population, just a small Tn town and in 1969, Goodyear put the town on the map. My dad was a plumber and pipe fitter and helped build the plant. It’s 2023 and Union City is STILL here. Lots of the guys went to trade schools to become welders, Nurse’s, some got out of town or out of state jobs, but basically the township stuck it out together. Another tire manufacturer of humongous machinery tires took over the building, Titan Tire. We all got knocked down a bit, but Union City and the surrounding county GOT RIGHT BACK UP‼️Thank you guys for the song.

This song hit me hard when it came out. I’m from New England, but grew up working in a metal shop, we almost folded back then. We managed to survive, thanks to the boss taking zero pay for a few months. It was scary, humbling, and strengthening. This is the first time I’ve watched the video. February 10 is my birthday. Weird. Edit: when the song came out it was gas is $5 and change at the pump . They changed the lyrics when the gas prices halved, so it didn’t sound unrealistic.

No matter how cold, how hot, or how bad he feels he does what he has to do to make sure we have a roof over our head and food in our bellies. He served his country in the navy and is just one hell of a man in my eyes. Thumbs up to Ronnie for this song, Thank you I cry everytime i hear it.

This song makes me think of my dad. He's retired now but used to work in an oil refinery, working 12 hour shifts overnight, weekends, holidays... more than his fair share in fact, 'cause others didn't want to. Then didn't see him much in the day because that was his bedtime. It was my dad who kept us going financially for so many years. I appreciate that and this song so much - it's impossible to listen to without tearing up. But that's what a good work ethic feels like.

Honestly if I won the lotto, every time I saw someone that I thought genuinely needed help. I would pay for whatever they were buying and give them a little extra. Sometimes I would leave money at a store or restaurant and pay it forward. I hope people with money don’t get to caught up in them selves and actually do the right thing. Don’t ever let anything change you, stay humble and remember where you came from.

Here in Carolina furniture and textile mills began closing in the early 90s; the other shoe dropped with NAFTA in 1994. Entire towns were reduced to vacant buildings, empty windows and decay.. Main Street and formerly vibrant shops lay dormant, cracked windows and For Lease signs within the blast crater of Walmart. We have the 2nd highest loss of farmland in the country after Texas; many new generations are packing it in and heading to the cities. Never for a moment forget to stop and pray on all the blessings that you have.

I lost my dad on Thursday. 11-21-19..I travelled and worked with my dad for a construction company for years. Early on one of our bosses loved country and I heard this song come on riding with him and my dad once...it was the first country song I ever liked and I liked it because it reminded me of my dad. The hardest working, most intelligent and handy man I’ve ever known. My best friend and hero I will miss him forever. Cherish your dads people. Let them know. My dad was 53 and died a horrible death of cancer. The last year I’ve been by his bedside 24/7. In the beginning as a son and best friend wanting to be with my hero. In the end as those things but also his caregiver. Luckily I don’t have kids and was able to do this, and as hard as it was I’d do it a hundred thousand more times to have him again. Idk why I’m writing all this...I just don’t know what to do with myself

I hope you are one of the few who gets to retire and enjoy it. A lot of us started working full-time in our teens and tore ourselves up. Working for the company and never being appreciated is the worse. My husband worked since he was 16 full-time and then also on his parents farm. I worked full-time since I was 13, which BTW was when I also had to leave the abuse and take care of myself. Many 12-16 hr shifts and sometimes if help was short I'd work 20 hrs. We both worked 6-7 days a week. I wound up broken down at the age of 45 and my husband died on the job at the age of 50. We have nothing to show for it but many happy memories of the time we spent together. Best wishes to you and your family

Mark Flitton Took care of my mom and dad for 45 yrs. Both were disabled. Now I am alone. Use to be a journeyman pipefitter and made good money. Now I'm broke down from lifting bodies and done out of love, I never got paid. Now I'm 66 and disabled... Alone, I live on 750.00 a month. Lost my home had to sell my truck and lost everything I owned to reposession. Was sleeping in my car with nothing but the clothes on my back and no money in my pocket. I survived! Now I'm one of the poor, living on very little a month. Sometimes I run out of food at the end of the month but I've learned how to fast for Gods homeless and poor for that week. God is good to me. I have a roof over my head and a bed to call my own and a GM car that runs well. . Can't work but I can pray!!! He's met all my needs.

@@donnakeeley7924 I understand where you are coming from. I worked in hospitals and nursing homes which tore me up over the years. I've had several surgeries trying to fix myself and after so long not working nobody wants to hire me at age 58. My husband died on the job at the age of 50. It took a toll on me ,mentally, psychological and financial. Back in the day everyone wanted me to work for them but not anymore.

Man. For what it's worth, I am truly sorry to hear that. When I hear these things, I think of my parents and everything they've worked for. If this happened to them, my heart would break into a million pieces, but you better believe I would do anything and everything to get them back on their feet and living life again. I am so sorry. I can only hope that you have loved ones that will do anything for you. Because after that, life itself becomes so much better and enjoyable. Even if it's kids or siblings. Don't matter who. Call em up. It ain't worth a fight unless your fanily is by your side.

Ronnie Dunnn is hands down one of the best country vocalists of all time...right up there with George Jones.

I know of and have listened to Ronnie Dunn but 11 years after this video was posted I'm seeing this for the first time. It's really hitting me, I was there at the time of the recession as probably most of us were. I don't have a job again just like what happened then and I'm worried. I don't have enough value to keep me on I guess. I'm not highly educated, I've worked jobs similar to this all my working life. I didn't have kids then but I do now. It feels way more serious and I'm scared. I want to work and support my family.

How quickly things can change. I sure hope this American spirit of hard work and determination doesn’t die like it appears to be.
