I agree. it really comes down to a matter of preference I believe at this level. I personally find the round muscle bellies of PH more aesthetically pleasing. I also think PH's narrow waist/v taper is an advantage too. That being said, judging criteria on any particular year is another matter. Some years they seem to look for mass others they seem to look for Aesthetics. I suppose it can be argued that Ronnie was the more complete package... but again.. preference!

dexter stood on stage with almost everybody he said people would be in shock when ronnie undressed, i don't know how anybody can argue with a guy like dexter he saw them live in person with his own two eyes, so pictures don't tell the whole story and even looking at the pics ronnie is the clear winner

In 2003 era theres no way 1998-99 ronnie would stand a chance because the judges would give it to 2003 Ron . Even jay would place ahead of 98-99 Ron in 2003 . A 98-99 Ron would stand a better chance today of winning now that the judges are steering back towards streamlining the physiques ...

I notice a pattern here with the third year in the decade. 1973: One of the best physiques of Arnold ever and also the most shredded one. 1983: Insanely good Samir Bannout 1993: Arguably the best physique of Dorian Yates 2003: Arguably the best Ron ever 2013: Arguably the best physique of Phil Heath What's in store for 2023? Maybe Ramy comes in with lat insertions and hard grainy conditioning?

Bodybuilding isnt a beauty competition. Its about muscular development and leanness. Ronnie is another level.

Phil definitely has the back poses. Ronnies back isnt as conditioned, especially shows in the lat spread

Phil had actually admitted he would not have a chance against Coleman. Although not the prettiest, Coleman had a certain thick dense look to his muscles that is very hard to beat

He just doesn’t look great though. Hes an amazing body builder no doubt but he doesn’t flow very well compared to so many others which is a very important thing in bodybuilding. It’s not all about size and muscle separation. You gotta have a good flow from top to bottom. His mid section seems almost to big for the rest of his body.

Pics r not sized correctly. Doesn’t show how much bigger Ronnie really is. You could fit Phil in Ronnie’s shoulder. But the pics n symmetry make Phil’s shoulders look bigger when if on same stage they r not bigger

I think it's the vascularity. Phil does look drier in the mid back. I agree there's no way it's a big difference based on other body parts but I think Phil's back does look tighter and cleaner.

well not really, the lighting doesn't decide and pick between muscle groups. at 6:40 you can see the difference between Coleman's glutes and hamstrings and his upper body. Look at his back, it is much smoother and obviously holds water retention. Phil is dry ALL OVER, his lower back is much more conditioned than Ronnie's and his traps are visible from top to bottom.

I gotta say you had me rolling with the jokes. Great channel.

Pictures don't do a good Justice seeing them in person is what really makes it if you saw a Rony in person next to Phil you wouldn't even question Ronnie's dominance

Ronnie did get bigger between 2002-2003 but he also sacrificed conditioning for more mass (aka not dieting as much as he did previously) and that is easily seen in the mid section, quads and the back. Look at his back in the rear lat spread, it obviously holds a lot of water retention and doesn't look nowhere near as conditioned or dry as his glutes and hamstrings.

Ronnie would just be 'a conditioned big ramy' for phil in my opinion

What many people miss is that Ronnie’s rear lat spread isn’t done very well and it still is impressive with slabs of muscle everywhere even showing on his upper trap area. If you flare out like that vs the traditional rolling your shoulder blades in towards the front there is a distinct difference in how wide you look with the flaring toward the front giving you a much wider look. It is scary to think how Ronnie’s rear lat spread would have looked if done say like Phil’s. He would have probably had one of the best rear lat spreads of all time even challenging Dorians.

Ronnie Coleman 1999 was better conditioned and better at all the poses.

Phil's hips are farther ahead then his back he's flexing his back in both directions were Ronnie's only flexing in One fron right to left. . phil with his hips ahead of his midline is flexing from front to back and side to side .if ronnoe was flexing in directions you would see the same type of detail

I'm gonna get hate but I "Phil" that Heath is better he has a far more pleasing physique and proportions with paper thin skin. Take away the fact that he's so narrow and he would be pretty close to perfection.

I think Phil has a more aesthetic build, but Ronnie's mass is just unbeatable. I HATE his midsection...I wish more than anything they could figure a way to get back to tiny waists, but I don't think that's gonna happen any time soon.

I know that it's considered irrelevant in body building competition but it would be interesting if you could dig up some stats on these comparisons. Ronnie flattens Phil. Phil can lean back all he wants in the back shots, that doesn’t mean he has lower lat insertions.

Ronnie’s back when he does the rear lat spread doesn’t match the rest of his body. I don’t get why people argue this. Phil’s conditioning goes throughout his whole body and your right Ronnie’s back does look soft compared to his legs and arms. Never realized it really until watching this

Phil is so much more aesthetic and round and a better representation for mens open bodybuilding! I don’t even think it’s close but I know alot of folks think otherwise just cuz of Ronnie’s unparalleled muscle mass! I think there’s more to it than that! That’s just my humble opinion though!

Phil wins the side chest. Better conditioning in the arms, chest and legs., Plus he's executing the pose way better.

Ronnie’s back in the rls looks soft and squishy if you pressed on it especially compared to Dorian’s concrete rls in 95’ O

i dont think ron’s delts smaller than phil’s. their rear double bi, phil leaned back and we can see his upper chest but ron didnt lean. rear lat spread, ron depressed his shoulder and rotated his lat too internally. phil was so smart to pose his body to be seen more bigger than he truly was. his legs, his weak part, his back, even his strong part. ron didnt need to lean backward his back to show his lat more bigger, cause he was already big. feeling shamed on his unbalanced symmetrical lat btw.

Phil doesnt even come close to Ronnie in the side chest.....

I argue my whole life ..Phill is called gift for a reason. Phill would smack any bodybuilder when in its peak ..his muscle fullness is way better than Ronnie and biceps is more proportional than Ronnie ....mass is not everything..

Phil has the aesthetic advantage (somehow), but Ronnie is Waaaaayyyyyy bigger.

I give you credit, Totally true that phil wins the back shots but coleman kills him in the front. The margin of victory puts ronnie ahead

Coleman's glutes somehow seem more proportionate than Phil's. Beside that he has probably the best most muscular. But I guess that year didn't have good photos

Excellent observation! This is the major difference or weakness if you want to call it that. One of the main separating factors I believe. I find it so nitpicky at that point, but that's what judges are there to do. It's just something about the natural flow (genetics) of Heath's glutes that don't match or compare to ronnie's.

Phil's first 4 or 5 were peak bodybuilding. I love ronnie as a person. But phil was a god
