To explain it in a way someone who isn't familiar with the Universe would understand. The Warhammer 40K universe includes many races, one of them being mankind, who once were united under the banner of The Emperor. The Emperor was essentially a living god, and he created 18 "sons" called primarchs in his image to assist him in managing the vast Imperium of Man as it expanded across the galaxy. Each of the 18 Primarch then created and controlled a legion of genetically enhanced super soldiers called Space Marines, which are the men you see running around in various colors of power armor. (Yellow, Blue, Red, etc). A legion of Space Marines is called a "Chapter" and each of the Primarchs had control over their own chapter. All was well, until one day, for reasons that are too in depth to explain, one of The Emperor's sons, a Primarch named Horus, became corrupted by the evil deities that also reside in the WH40K universe, known as the Chaos Gods. The Chaos Gods twisted Horus's mind, and turned him against his father by giving him fake visions that tricked him into betraying the Imperium. Horus then returned and convinced 8 of the other Primarchs to join his side and wage war against The Emperor. Essentially, of the 18 Primarchs, 9 were loyal to the Emperor, while 9 betrayed him. Thus, a civil war larger than any other war that had ever been fought in the Galaxy was waged between those loyal to the Emperor, and those who sought to destroy him. This event became known as the Horus Heresy, named after Horus himself, and is what you are seeing in this trailer. And yes. Horus is the massive man you see at the beginning and end of the trailer. What you are seeing in the trailer is only a fraction of the war itself. It went on for a REALLY long time. If you want to learn more about it, there is a book series on the Horus Heresy that you can read.

One little correction though - Legions and Chapters are different. Legions are legions - no max member rule or anything - a very devastating force. Chapters appeared after the second founding when Guilliman wrote the Codex Astartes and limited a chapter to 1000 space marines each and put up some other stupid rules. Each Legion broke into different chapters. For example - The Imperial fists broke into the Crimson Fists, Black Templars and the modern Imperial fists chapter. The Ultramarines had the most succesor chapters out there since they were the largest legion while on the other hand some legions were so small that they could only have 1 succesor chapter - such as the Space wolves who only had 1 succesor chapter - the Wolf Brothers (note that succesor chapters are the chapters that branched off the legion and did not keep the legion original name - so for the Space wolves they basicly got 2 chapters in total - Space wolves and Wolf Brothers)

@@roninbyproxy No problem! If you want a good introduction into the Warhammer Verse in general, I suggest you watch both parts of "Every Warhammer 40K Faction explained" by Bricky on KZread. Two long and in depth videos that explain more about the overall universe and all of its races. He ALSO has a seperate version of the series called "Every Space Marine faction explained" if you want to learn about all of the different Space Marine Chapters and Factions after the Horus Heresy.

@@deather3668 Right! I didnt want to add in the extra lore of Guilliman and the Codex and all of the other things that happened afterwards because I felt that would be a bit too long for a "general" explanation. So I just kind of threw Chapters and Legions together since in the present time, Space Marines Chapters are what exist, and if he were to discuss it with someone else, if he said Chapters, they'd know what he was talking about but if he said Legions, they'd correct him and it might confuse him 😅 I figured he would find out what the difference was on his own later. Especially if he reads the Horus Heresy books.

This trailer not for a video game or series. It's for a table-top game. There is, however, a large book-series about the Horus Heresy. It's pretty awesome.

My piece of lore, Horus Heresy was tiny in the grand scheme of things. Sure it was the biggest single conflict Imperium fought but it wasn't some all end be all war that had ever been fought in the Galaxy. Heck, it wasn't even the biggest conflict Humanity has fought. The DAoT humanity had a Cybernetic Revolt 7 thousand years earlier which extinguished millions of planets. The weaponry used back then would send chills down the spines of even self-righteous Aeldari. They had giant sun-snuffer mechaserpents the size of Saturn's rings. Mechnivores that could bite holes in literal time and space, entropic engines that instantly ignited planets, swarms of nanites that could strip a planet in seconds. Devices that could cause devastation on a planetary or even stellar scale were common enough as to be remembered not as unique pieces but as general parts of the war. Machines fought on both sides, at least initially, but by the end most had gone insane and were attacking everything and everyone. Human technology had developed weapons that could permanently destroy portions of the Warp. True disintegrators as hand-held weaponry charged by background magnetospheres of the planets. Ships like Speranza size of the continent shoot blackholes and in case you can see the future and dodge ahead of time they shoot a burst of Tachyeon and time shift you into the past a nanosecond so you overlap with yourself and instantly self-annihilate before blackhole still connects with you. We are talking about people who had time-traveling, extra-galactic, reality-warping, AI-controlling ships as default exploratory vessels and were so batshit overpowered fucking Orks of all people signed a non-aggression treaty with them! And don't get me started on War in Heaven. The only reason Galaxy is still in one piece is that Celestial Orrery is controlled by a very, very careful and paranoid Dynasty.
