Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway - 'End of Season Parade' 29-30/10/2022

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

An annual highlight in the operating season of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, their 'End of Season Parade' rounds off their main operating season in style as the winter period approaches. The event, this year held over the weekend of October 29rd-30th, featured every single operational steam locomotive from the home-fleet, bolstered by a resident diesel in the line up.
The event showcased some of the RH&DR's much adored thetrics. On the Saturday, No1 "Green Goddess" and No9 "Winston Churchill" powered a 28 mile non-stop service from Hythe to Hythe via Dungeness, while a steam hauled freight service could be seen amongst the frequent passenger services. In the dying light of the opening day, two non-stop 'Sunset Specials' also ran over the shingle and marsh, providing a late night spectacle as they charged through New Romney respectively. On the Sunday, New Romney became something of a locomotive showground, with numerous non-stop services throughout the day. Concluding the event, a quintuple-headed service ran at dusk from Hythe to New Romney, with the 5 currently operational resident pacifics at the helm.
Appearing fresh from overhaul, though not yet accepted into active traffic, 'North American' Pacific Class - No10 "Doctor Syn" was on display at New Romney during the event. By contrast, the weekend served as the last in public service for No9 "Winston Churchill", as the locomotive would be withdrawn for an intermediate overhaul after the event.
Locomotives:
RH&DR Pacific Class - No1 "Green Goddess"
RH&DR 'North American' Pacific Class - No9 "Winston Churchill"
RH&DR Mountain Class - No6 "Samson"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No2 "Northern Chief"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No3 "Southern Maid"
RH&DR Mountain Class - No5 "Hercules"
RH&DR Krupp Pacific Class - No11 "Black Prince"
RH&DR Diesel Class - No12 "J.B. Snell"
Footnote: A massive thank you must be given to both ‪@definitelytransport484‬, and the volunteers and locomotive crews of the RH&DR, for their assistance and accommodation in helping make this video.
All footage filmed on Saturday the 29th, and Sunday the 30th, of October 2022.

A great video. Brings back fond memories for me. As a youngster in the mid to late 1950's we used to go on holiday to St. May's Bay and stay in a holiday bungalow owned by a friend of my father's. We used to walk down to the railway station to watch the trains go through and the highlight of the holiday for me was taking a ride on the railway. In the late 1970's we took my sons for a ride on the railway. I now live in South Africa and now married to a South African. I took her on a tour round the UK in 2013 and one of the places I took her to was Dymchurch to see the railway and the model railway at New Romney. We took a return ride from Dymchurch to Dungeness. She was absolutely fascinated by the locos. Even the bungalow we used to stay in is still there. Happy memories. Alan Rushbrook.

They could really do with some tamping and ballasting, they really could. Unusual to see tender-first running in service.

Still feels like only recently that Winston Chruchill returned from overhaul. I'll miss him too. Though it's great that Dr Syn will be back in service next year.

Been waiting for this one, your autumn treat for us. Not as mad this year though, but some great low light power shots through Romney and the freight working always makes me smile😀 Always a delight to see these locos, some people decry them but when you see them working it's a sight to behold - apart from the wibbly-wobbly way!!!😵‍💫 Cheers Matthew👍👍👍

I'm honestly very impressed by the whistling at 4:00. Those engines are LOUD, the crew must have seriously acclimatized to that over the course of their work

Looked like a great event, shame there wasn't any visiting locos like there usually is but other than that still great, no captain howey in service this year? Haven't seen him running in a long time. No Bug either?

  • @bricksathome1

Captain Howey has been in bits for quite a few years now. I've heard rumours that there were plans to convert it into a battery electric locomotive that fell through and that bits of it are being used in JB Snell in order to to keep it alive. I got an opportunity to look around the engine sheds a couple of weeks ago and on a pallet in the corner sat what I assume was Captain Howey's prime mover, based on the a small section of Captain-Howey-liveried panelling that was propped up against it. I think it's pretty safe to say that we wont be seeing CH back in service for quite a while longer at the very least

Really was a good event. They don't normally bring a visiting engine in for this event; "Shelagh of Eskdale" was on long term loan to the railway, to help with operating and permanent way duties. No14 is currently in bits, as bricksathome says. Body panels were visable, as well as the engine, inside the locomotive shed. Various bits have been used to keep 12 in a fit and reliable state. No official word given on its future. I believe 'The Bug' is out for overhaul.
