Romania, Transylvania Hay Camp 2015 Part 2 (of 3)

Watch traditional hay making in Gyimes, Transylvania, where flower-filled hay meadows are cut with scythes and raked with Uncle Viktor's hand made wooden rakes before the hay is brought down to the village on horse-drawn carts. Horses and people work hard in this unspoilt village of traditional wooden houses and stone roads. A colourful village festival highlights strong senses of pride and community.

I just accidentally stumbled upon your videos, and I absolutely love them. I spent great chunks of time in a farming village in southern Finland, and while the culture is different, there are enough similarities in how people live off the land, that I'm experiencing major nostalgia. Thank you for your lovely videos. I look forward to exploring more!

Same with me. I grew up in Northern California. We did have a tractor and our hay wagon had chicken wire sides framed with wood. When I was a child it was my job to stomp it down, pack it. Later (several years) I would drive the tractor forward. I loved jumping around on the hay! It smelled so good! At night my mom put baking soda in my bath water, because I would be very itchy!

When you think about it, there is no mechanical way to make such good use of once forested hillsides. Very commendable that they have left mature trees here and there to stabilize steep terrain. The horses appear to be in very good condition. Did not know this type of farming, in harmony with nature, took place anymore in Europe. Very foresighted to have made a video record. Thank you.

Being able to see ribs in a horse that’s not skinny is usually a sign of a bad case worms. Plus did you see it feet? It’s two three months past being shod. Having feet that long especially while doing hard work can lead to catastrophic damage to the horses tendons, especially the coffin bone located in the middle of the hoof

More videos like this one need to be made. As the dehumanizing modern life destroys mind, body, soul, and heart, it is encouraging to see that ways human beings have lived for centuries are being TAUGHT and respected. Using machines to harvest what man and beast must eat has its hazards. We seem to understand that instinctively and are turning back to more gentle ways of living. Why not do things slowly. Does it all really need to be done in 5 minutes instead of 15? Work done in the community and in common build social order and destroys loneliness and the feeling of separation from others which is so much a part of modern life today. Manual labor promotes physical health, gets you away from the computer and out in the sunshine. Food made without chemicals or genetic modification! What a pure joy! This is why these programs are so attractive to the younger generation!! They long for meaning in life and this video and those like it prove that there can still be a way of living that is pure, simple, meaningful, honest and SANE!

The Romanians on the other 2 historic regions of Romania, when they make jokes about the Transilvanians is always, but ALWAYS, related to them being "slow" Here is one: Two Transilvanians meet in a village. One on the left side of the road and the other on the right. The one on the left says "you wanna bet that I can cross this road to you in less than 5 minutes ?" The other replies "c'mon man, you trying to tell me that you are lightning fast ?"

Yes, but. What makes films like that so impressive is, we see no heating oil being used, no natural gas pipelines or even electricity lines. 'And would we all be allowed to again live that way - without consuming 'what causes death, destruction and empire'?' Those people are hard to make profit off. Good for their independence and happyness. Wrong for the (anglosaxon) rule of law - they are as well maximum contract free with the (anglosaxon) world - 'what makes us most supscious' - 'we should send at least some troups to look after it'. Like we did in India. (Or Germany and a lot of other places all over the world as well today) Cause they are not online as well - so we cannot measure (just to better know) their behaviours electronicly - a pest. At least the young girls would like to work for Donna Karan in a fashion shop, if they just knew about it - night shift, making garments. Five dollars a night. 'Huh, make it three. They have bred and butter enough at home. And a place to sleep, and a grandma to sing them lullebys - against bad mood (we should better not say depression, Depression occurs amongst our workforce from time to time, rarely - but it's not the jobs nor the conditions.)

Hay was grown and cut and hauled to the barns like this in the United States from the late 1800s to about the 1930s when the early tractors began to be used on the farms. This is a good way to experience how hard farmers had to work just to harvest hay, add to this milking and taking care of cows and other farm animals and cooking and washing clothes done by the women of that time period. I know that in some parts of Europe haying is still done like this because modern farm equipment is to expensive to buy.

We used to tie small bunches of grass together & then make a heap & then carry it in the bullock cart. The sickle used in India is different. We have to sit & cut the grass whereas you can do it by standing. But the work is very hard. I salute those people.

Romania is a wonderful country! Romania lives by its traditions, but you don't have to meddle in Moldova!

Many people don't realize that many of those barn are over 100 years old. Especially the older stone ones. I love the happy piggies, that's the way they are suppose to live not in a cage or pig pen.

These people are an ethnic minority in Romania who speak Hungarian. They were defenders of the old borders of Hungary and stayed there preserving their culture. I, myself live in our newly built house with my parents who are both from here.Amazing landscapes and new tourist attractions, please come and visit. You can go skiing in the winter and go down bob roller coasters in the summer.Ww2 and 1 destroyed bunkers and trenches are all over the place, just ask some locals, not to mention the culture and rich tradition you might be intrested in.
